The cpuminer-opt miner (source) is a fork from cpuminer-multi by tpruvot that adds optimizations for many algorithms for more recent CPUs with support for the AES-NI instruction set, though the miner also works on older SSE2 capable CPUs with lower performance. Up until recently the cpuminer-opt was available only for Linux users, but starting from version 3.3 there is also Windows support and we have compiled 64-bit binaries of the miner for Windows. In the archive below you can find multiple executable files that are compiled for different CPU architectures that support AES-NI instructions, so you are welcome to try them. The default cpuminer.exe is compiled for Intel Westmere, the first architecture that has support for the AES-NI instruction set and cpuminer-amd.exe is bdver1 which should work on all AMD processors with AES-NI. If you have a more recent Intel Sandybridge, Ivybridge, Haswell or Broadwell-based processor you can try the respective binary to see if that will squeeze some extra performance, or you can compile directly on your PC with the native instruction set supported by your CPU. We have not tried much of the algorithms of the miner yet, but we have checked HODL support – one of the more recent interesting CPU-only coins and it seems to be working well, though on some systems it occasionally gives low difficulty shares.

One more announcement fro Bitmain, the AntMiner S9 ASIC Bitcoin miner is no official and will start shipping on June 12th for $2100 USD without the shipping cost (power supply is not included). The device uses the company’s new 16nm ASIC chips BM1387 and essentially triples the hashrate of the previous generation S7 miners while offering the same level of power usage. The Bitmain AntMiner S9 should be capable of 14 THS SHA-256 mining hashrate with a power usage of 1375 Watts at the wall, so definitely a good improvement over the S7.

The big question however is if now was the right time to announce the new mining hardware, as of you order now from the first batch you might be getting your units delivered right before the Bitcoin block reward halving. So it might be wise to wait for a later batch of S9 miners after the halving to see how the situation will change and if you might get a better deal in terms of price for the hardware. Then again if you are using S7 miners you might already get to the planning for switching to S9 now that the previous generation S5 is no longer profitable barely covering the electricity costs.

Bitmain has a new interesting offer for miners in the form of a lower hashrate ASIC miner for Bitcoin called AntMiner S7-LN that comes packaged with a 1KW Enermax ATX PSU. The new Bitmain AntMiner S7-LN apparently has less chips – 90x BM1385 instead of the 135 found in the regular S7 and as a result you get a bit more than half the hashrate at about half the power usage. The AntMiner S7-LN is rated at 2.7 THS hashrate and about 700W of power usage at the wall and can be yours for $291 USD without the shipping and taxes per unit – the miner and the PSU for it – with the shipping expected to start on June 2nd. The good thing about this offer is that the PSU is a regular ATX one so it can be used for a PC or a GPU mining rig and not only for ASIC miners when the time to shut down the S7-LN comes.

The only drawback is that the Bitcoin block reward halving is right around the corner, so in about a month and a half the coins mined by the miner will be cut in half. So consider carefully whether now is the right time to purchase SHA256 ASIC mining hardware or better to wait for the halving and then consider what to do…

There is now an sgminer fork for GPU mining Revolvercoin (XRE) that uses a new X11 Evo algorithm (source) for AMD GPUs. The new X11 Evo algorithm comes as a solution to the already available ASIC miners for the standard X11 algorithm, meaning that X11 Evo is only CPU and GPU mineable for the moment, though CPU mining with a GPU miner available is not very reasonable. The first altcoin to use the new X11 Evo algorithm is Revolvercoin (XRE). The hashrate you can expect to get from the X11 Evo algorithm is a few times lower than what the same AMD GPU could be capable of providing with the regular X11 algorithm, so something like 2-3 MHS is to be expected at the moment depending on your GPU.

Here comes another interesting update of ccMiner from tpruvot with a new Windows binary of the latest ccMiner 1.8-dev (source) that comes with Compute 6 (SM 6.0) and CUDA 8.0 support in time for the availability of the new Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 and 1070 GPUs. The release below includes two versions of ccMiner, one is 32-bit binary for Windows that is compiled with CUDA 8.0 and with support for Compute 2.0 or newer Nvidia GPUs, and another that is 64-bit Windows binary compiled with CUDA 8.0 for Compute 5.0 or newer Nvidia GPUs. In order to use the new ccMiner with CUDA 8.0 you will have to use video drivers 362 or newer that do come with support for CUDA 8.0, so if you have not updated yet you might want to do so now. We have not done any tests to see if the new CUDA 8.0 will bring better performance or not as we still don’t have access to the new Nvidia Pascal GPUs, but as soon manage to get our hands on the new hardware we are going to be doing some testing of GTX 1080 and 1070 with ccMiner.

The Bitcoin exchange rate has jumped significantly going all the way up to $500 USD on many EU and US-based exchanges and skyrocketing even higher on some Asian exchanges. The jump seems to be caused mostly the Chinese BTC markets driving the price up as as the national currency apparently suffers another devaluation and people are moving to investing their money in Bitcoins. The side effect from this jump in BTC exchange rate however is the drop in price for many altcoins that might suffer loosing some of their value, but it might be just temporary. Genoil is working on a new release of his ethminer 0.9.41 fork version 1.1 pre-release (source) and here is a Windows binary of the latest version that you can try. Genoil’s fork of ethminer is targeted at Nvidia CUDA miners, but it also works on AMD OpenCL for mining of Ethereum (ETH). The latest pre-release version 1.1 is intended for testing as it brings some nice new features, but it might contain some bugs at the moment. You are welcome to download and try the compiled binary of the latest 1.1 pre-release version and test how the no need for DAG files functionality is working. Of course the miner still needs DAG data, but it is no longer stored on your hard drive in the form of large files taking up space, the data is generated when the miner is stared on the fly and it loaded into the GPUs. There is also CUDA Compute 2.0 support brought back for older Nvidia GPUs, though on these older video cards the performance might not be that great for mining Ethereum anyway (you still need 2GB of video memory). Again, this is a pre-release version 1.1 with the idea for people to try and report how the new features work and if they find any bugs, so you are welcome to try it, but be careful as there might be some bugs and it may not be 100% stable.

The main Decred (DCR) staking pool hasn’t been accepting new registrations for quite a while, but now more staking pools are expected to soon be available. The first from the new wave of DCR staking pools is from Stakeminer that is already running on the mainnet with a few more still on the testnet that should soon also become available of the main Decred network. The Decred Stake Pool from Stakeminer is currently running up with a 7.5% fee, but it will probably get lower once more pools are available and DCR holders have more options for staking without having to run their wallet 24/7 locally. It seems that there is another product appearing on the market in the form of a X11 ASIC miner from a third company, though this one is apparently targeted at the Chinese mining community – the X11 ASIC Baikal Mini Miner. The miner apparently is capable of providing about 150 MHS X11 hashrate with a power usage of about 40 Watts thanks to the use of 40nm production process for the ASIC chips. There is no clear information about exact price, but it should be around 1-2 BTC or the equivalent in USD, though some shops have listed the device at a higher price than that. It is good to see more alternatives, but the big question is if the X11-based crypto coins are capable of handling the massive new hashrate that is provided by the ASIC miners that are getting produced at a fast pace with the competition heating up.

It seems that the miner uses a board like Raspberry Pi for providing a web-based interface for control and monitoring of the mining process and there is no need to plug it in to a computer, all you need is power and a network cable plugged to the device. With the right price and availability outside of the Chinese markets this device can be an interesting option for home miners due to the relatively simple open design and the lower noise level, so you might want to keep an eye out for the Baikal X11 ASIC Mini Miner. For the moment we have not been able to find a way to order one of these devices to do a proper review, but we are going to keep trying.

PinIdea is the second company to release X11 ASIC miners and apart from their large DR-1 miners that apparently had some issues with shipping they are ready to start shipping smaller X11 USB ASIC miners in a few days. PinIdea X11 USB ASIC Miner DU-1 is supposed to offer about 9 MHS X11 mining hashrate with about 7 Watts of power usage (1.4A at 5V), so you will need to use these with powered USB hubs capable of 2A per port to have some extra headroom. The price of the X11 USB miner DU-1 is set at 9 DASH or about $65 USD with the current exchange rate of DASH/USD (the price should include shipping cost) with shipping scheduled to start on May 24th.
The small X11 USB ASIC miners should help provide the decentralization that X11 crypto coins need after the first large ASIC miners hit the market with a lot of hashpower in the hands of a few users. Not to mention that many people will probably get these miners just for fun and not considering ROI time and such as even though they are not that much powerful, they are still something fun to play with if crypto mining is your hobby.
We have actually pre-ordered the large PinIdea DR-1 X11 ASIC miner a while ago as we wanted to review it as we did with the iBeLink X11 ASIC miner, but due to the issues the company had with shipping and miners arriving damaged we got a refund until they resolved the issue. Meanwhile PinIdea has already announced a new X11 ASIC miner called DR-2 that will be a redesigned and improved DR-1 offering 600 MHS of hashrate at 335W of power usage in a smaller and more silent enclosure. The catch is that the new miner will be available in August and that is quite some time from now and we are probably going to wait for this one to get it for a detailed review.

The Hong Kong based crypto currency exchange Gatecoin has been hacked and had apparently lost a lot of Ethereum and some Bitcoins stollen by the hackers. The official announcement released by the exchange says that the breach of their system caused a los of 15% of their crypto-asset deposits. In total the breach resulted in the loss of 185000 ETH and 250 BTC, which is equivalent to $2 million USD according to Gatecoin. If you were using the exchange and had some funds in it you might be interested in the following announcement:
A bespoke platform designed to enable all Gatecoin clients to withdraw their remaining funds in BTC, DAO, DGD, REP, USD, EUR and HKD will be released on May 28, 2016. The exact date when withdrawals for clients’ ETH funds has yet to be confirmed.
All DGD, REP and DAO funds are secure and Gatecoin has funded the DAO contracts for DAO token holders. 5% of all BTC funds were compromised in the breach, but 95% remain stored in multi-sig cold wallets along with the remaining crypto-assets.
All fiat currency funds held in USD, EUR and HKD are secured in segregated client accounts and can be withdrawn by clients after May 28, 2016.
The Gatecoin team is currently working on raising additional funding to cover the losses of BTC and ETH and hopes to be able to reimburse all customers that have experienced losses as soon as possible.

The crypto currency exchange C-Cex has introduced Ethereum (ETH) trading markets that include over 100 crypto currencies. Prior to launching the ETH markets there were BTC, USD, LTC and DOGE markets available and now you can trade many coins directly for Ether coins. The ETH markets are new, so there is not much trading activity yet or big volumes, but it is nice to see that Ethereum is getting more attention and we are starting to see it becoming available for direct trade against many other coins. It may not be long before we start seeing ore exchanges adding ETH markets along LTC or DOGE markets following in the footsteps of this exchange. We’ll have to see, but if Ethereum keeps its high exchange rate and the interest from users continues to grow it will continue to replace LTC as the most popular altcoin market trading pair.

Genoil has updated his ethminer 0.9.41 fork to version 1.0.8 (source) and here is a Windows binary of the latest version that you can try. Genoil’s fork of ethminer is targeted at Nvidia CUDA miners, but it also works on AMD OpenCL for mining of Ethereum (ETH). The new version 1.0.8 has some minor bug fixes and improvements, but probably the most important new feature is the much improved output you get that is more user friendly with a single line of text reporting your current status. You are welcome to download and try the compiled binary of the latest 1.0.8 version and make sure you are also taking advantage of the recently introduced Stratum failover feature as well. Check the example BAT file for more information on how to use the new Stratum failover mode and do check out the new shorter log output with hashrate and accepted and rejected shares by the pools as well as fails.
