If you did not know Steam has introduced support for online game purchases with Bitcoin in April last year, allowing users of the crypto currency to quickly and easily spend it for software. The payment processor that Valve is using for accepting Bitcoin payments is BitPay. We have recently tried purchasing some games with Bitcoin from Steam and were pleasantly surprised by the experience we’ve had…
Once you select Bitcoin as the payment method you are presented with a QR code to scan to do a payment with a mobile device or you can just copy and paste the BTC address and the amount of coins you need to send to complete the payment. You have 15 minutes to initiate the transaction and as soon as you send the coins and the transaction gets broadcasted over the network the payment is accepted, no need to wait for a minimum of 6 confirmations or anything like that. Really quick and easy to pay with Bitcoin for games on Steam and then you can just go on playing them, so if you still haven’t tried paying with Bitcoin then you might want to give it a try.

The enterprise segment is constantly upgrading their hardware and this fuels the second hand market with interesting and very affordable yet pretty powerful hardware that can also be used for crypto mining. The latest wave of hardware getting replaced and available at a really affordable prices are the first generation of Intel 2011 E5 dual CPU Xeon workstations and servers. This means that you are able to easily acquire a very nicely priced second had server system with two 8-core processors such as Intel Xeon E5-2650 v1 getting 16 physical or 32 logical cores with Hyper Threading. The big question here however is if systems like that that may be acquired cheap are really worth using for crypto mining as they only come with a lot of CPU power, but no GPU capable of being used for mining as for server needs not much GPU power is required generally. We have picked up one such cheap systems off eBay with dual Xeon E5-2650 processors and put it through some benchmarks to gent a better idea on what to expect…
Currently it seems that the only worthwhile CPU-based algorithm to check is the CryptoNight and using the what seems to be the fastest CPU software available at the moment – the XMR-Stak CPU Miner for Monero (XMR). Running the XMR-Stak miner on all 32 logical cores has managed to get us an average hashrate of about 523 HS (hashes per second). The result may not seem that bad for CPU mining, considering that it is a bit slower than a single high-end GPU and the power used by the system is about 150 Watts, so again similar to a more recent higher-end GPU.
We need to run the numbers through an XMR mining calculator and doing just that on Cryptocompare shows that we are actually going to be mining with profit, but the profit isn’t going to be that much. With the current rate it would take a couple of years just to earn back what we have paid for the hardware itself. Not very interesting to CPU mine with such a system, but this is just at the moment, with some new and interesting developments for coins that are only CPU mineable appearing things might look very different… especially if you get a couple of these dual CPU systems to have handy. For the moment however you might want to check them out if you have some other computational needs than crypto mining as the price they can be acquired for is really attractive and again they are still pretty powerful as far as CPU performance goes.

At the moment Nvidia GPU miners have the advantage for mining X11-Ghost with a faster hashrate for the more recent Maxwell and Pascal GPUs than AMD miners. Still AMD miners might be interested in checking out the X11-Ghost algorithm used by SIBCoin (SIB) as it is not that power hungry and with the increased interest with the recent addition of the algorithm on NiceHash as it might offer a nice profitability for users willing to sell their hashrate and get paid in Bitcoins directly.
So if you are using AMD GPU mining rigs you might want to check out X11-Ghost on NiceHash using the latest sgminer 5.6.0 Nicehash Fork (source). We are seeing a hasrate of between 7 MH/s and 8 MH/s on stock Radeon RX 480 and while still slower than about 11 MH/s on a stock Nvidia GTX 1070 the fact that the algorithm is not that power demanding and you can use lower power for the GPUs may make it attractive for some users, so do give it a try. Older generation of AMD GPUs may not be the best choice for this algorithm performance wise and the same pretty much goes for older Nvidia GPUs, but for AMD Polaris and Nvidia Maxwell and Pascal it is.

The recent addition of the X11-Ghost algorithm used by SIBCoin (SIB) on NiceHash has increased the user interest in the coin and the algorithm as expected. NiceHash has recommended the use of the latest release of ccMiner by tpruvot for X11-Ghost support on their servers, but it seems that this is not the fastest solution available to Nvidia miners as was pointed out to us. While ccminer v1.8.4 from tpruvot does about 8 MHs on a stock GTX 1070 GPU, but you can get faster speeds on the same hardware by using the latest ccMiner fork from alexis 78 (source). We have compiled a 64-bit Windows binary with Compute 5.x support and CUDA 7.5 for Nvidia Maxwell GPUs from the latest source for mining X11-Ghost (SIBCoin) and with it you can get about 10-11 MHs on a stock GTX 1070 GPU.
Do note that on mining rigs with multiple GPUs you might need to increase the amount of virtual memory (SWAP file) if you have less system memory in order to be able to run the miner with the default high intensity. On a 6x GTX 1070 GPUs mining rig with 8GB RAM we’ve had to increase the virtual memory to 24GB in order to be able to run the miner properly at the default intensity of 22 set for the X11-Ghost algorithm in the miner, otherwise the miner just crashes… 8GB RAM and 20GB SWAP file was not enough apparently.

You can now start selling your hashrate or alternatively buying such for the X11-Ghost algorithm used by SIBCoin (SIB) on NiceHash. SIBCoin is mostly supported by the Russian community, but in the last couple of months it has been growing steadily and the addition from NiceHash may help in the coin getting more interest from the international crypto community. The coin has a CPU miner, though not much useful nowadays with the availability of GPU miners. You can download the latest release ccMiner by tpruvot for Nvidia CUDA support of SIB and NiceHash or the latest NiceHash sgminer fork for AMD OpenCL GPUs. The latest release of the NiceHash Miner v1.7.5.0 software also comes with built-in support for the new X11-Ghost algorithm used by SIB.

Claymore has released yet another update for his ZCash AMD GPU Miner that brings some more extra performance boost for mining Cash (ZEC), however the latest v12.0 of the miner does come some new specifics. The latest version v12.0 comes with improved speeds: about 405 H/s on stock 390X, 450 H/s on stock Nano, 290 H/s on stock 280X, 295 H/s on stock RX480. It however has issues working with higher intensity on older GPUs with less VRAM such as 280X where the intensity may need to be lowered. Also on mining rigs with 6x GPUs where you may have just 4GB of system memory you may observe trouble running the miner properly on all 6 cards at maximum performance unless you have set at least 20GB SWAP file. Lowering the intensity manually may help, but it is much eaÑ€ier to just increase the amount of space allocated for the swap file…

You probably have heard about crypto viruses that encrypt your files and demand a ransom in Bitcoin to get your data back, though even if paying the demanded BTC you may still not get access back to the data. Well it seems that a new trend is users receiving extortion emails demanding Bitcoin to be paid for no apparent reason, though they do seem to rely on “catching” novice users off guard and scaring them that some of their “dirty secrets” may be leaked to their family, friends or employer. Of course these are emails intended to scare you and are not based on real threats, they are badly written in English and not personalized to the receiver mentioning any real data or anything to sound more convincing. As a result you can pretty much ignore them as nothing more than SPAM, though we are sure that some people may actually fall for the trick and even pay the demanded 1 Bitcoin ransom. Do note however that even if the threat was real by paying what is being demanded it does not mean that the promises would be kept, just as in the case with crypto viruses!
Here is a quoted example of such an email:
i now have your information.i have also used your user profile to find your Facebook page,Using this i can now message all of your friends and family members,
if you would like to prevent me from sharing this dirt info with all of your friends and family members (and perhaps even your employers too?) then you need to send 1 bitcoin to the following BTC address

Unfortunately it is things like these that do contribute to giving Bitcoin and crypto currencies a bad name, but when a lot of money is involved there are all kinds of “bad” people attracted trying to get them the easy way by cheating and lying normal people that may even never head of Bitcoin. Interesting update coming from NiceHash as they have announced they are currently implementing support for PascalCoin (PASC) on their marketplace for users selling and renting hashrate. There are currently two mining pools available for PASC from Nanopool and from Suprnova and it is being traded on Poloniex with a very serious volume. Recently there was was a more turbulene surrounding the coin thanks to unexpected fork of the blockchain following a wallet update, but it seems that the issue has been resolved for the moment. We’ve had our doubts that PascalCoin may have a short lived pump and dump on Poloniex. It seems that we are past over that phase already with the user interest remaining and the support for PASC increasing, so you might want to keep an eye out for PascalCoin (PASC) if you haven’t been doing it already as of late…

The Minebox project has been announced a while ago as an interesting solution that combines a NAS device for storing your own data with a blockchain powered cryptocurrency for storing other user’s data on your free and unused space and earning money for doing that. Minebox relies on affordable Enterprise grade hardware from HP, namely the HP MicroServer that we’ve covered before as an interesting choice in regards to use with SiaCoin and Storj for example. So we were not surprised that this project has decided to go for the particular hardware from HP and extend the base NAS functionality with support for SiaCoin (SC) “mining” by renting your currently unused space. It is definitely an interesting idea, buying hardware that you can use for file storage and at the same time it may even pay for itself thanks to renting the unused resources such as free hard drive space over time.
If Minebox picks up a lot os user interest and we believe that it has the potential to do so, then it might spark the interest in other companies that are specializing already in more feature rich NAS solutions to integrate blockchain-powered services as well as a part of their portfolio. We are talking about companies such as Asustor, Qnap, Synology and others that may decide to add support for their products to rent unused space and allow the owners of the hardware to get paid for that thanks to support for SiaCoin or Storj or maybe something else…
Minebox has announced that it will start a presale of the MineBox NAS hardware starting next week – February 6th, apparently using ShapeShift as a partner for the payment with Bitcoin and other altcoins. Though not much details about the presale or when the actual devices will start to ship is yet available, hopefully it will be soon. It is interesting to see if there will also be a software only solution also available for more advanced users that may be interested in building their own devices or adding it on existing HP Proliant Microservers they may own. So far it is more likely tha Minebox will be sticking to providing users with the complete solution of hardware and software together, though you should still be able to upgrade your initial hardware such as adding more hard drives for example.
