If you are looking for a plug and play full Bitcoin node solution you might want to check out the Bitcoin Mini solution that is powered by a Raspberry Pi 2 board with Arch Linux OS running a Bitcoin Core. The device comes with an 8 GB MicroSD card for the operating system plus 128 GB USB flash drive for storing the Bitcoin Blockchain. The 128 GB storage should be enough for quite some time considering that the size of the full Bitcoin blockchain data currently is getting close to 60 GB of data. The project offers two versions, the first one is a Mini Basic that is essentially a bare solution with just enough to plug in and have a full node running in your home with just basic command line functionality only for $139 USD. The second version is the regular Bitcoin Mini that comes with a custom Bitcoin API and webpage user interface that is available for $179 USD. You can also pay with Bitcoin which is to be expected from a project supporting crypto currencies taking into account the current exchange rate. The Bitcoin Mini is being shipped worldwide, but do note that shipping the product outside of USA is extra $25 USD.

EtherFaucet, a New Working Ethereum Ether Coin Faucet

etherfaucet

There are a lot of Bitcoin faucets, Litecoin faucets, Dash faucets and faucets for a lot of other alternative crypto currencies that give away small amounts of free crypto currency to users, however when we talk about Ethereum there aren’t any or almost any to be precise. So here comes EtherFaucet, a new free Ethereum faucet that gives away users free Ether coins and all you need to have is a wallet address where the coins will be sent to. Of course like any other faucet this Ethereum Faucet gives away only a fraction of an ETH coin and you need to make multiple requests (once every 10 minutes) until you collect at least 0.1 ETH and then you can actually cash out the collected coins to your wallet. The catch is that you need to spend some time on the website to collect the minimum amount before it is sent to your wallet, but that is the idea of all faucets as they are supported by banner advertisements. So making users spend more time looking and most of all clicking banner ads is what they want to do in order to actually be profitable for the site operator and in order to continue operating and giving away free Ether coins to users.

If you want to try out the EtherFaucet and get some free Ether coins from it…

Cryptocurrency: Searching for Legal Consistency

For those looking to participate in crypto-commerce, uncertainty about how the law will treat virtual currency transactions can be a stumbling block. Because crypto coins are permissionless innovation, commerce and its rules are developing from the ground up along with data and process infrastructure.  As regulators encounter bitcoin, they issue ad hoc statements about the nature of virtual currency and what it means to deal in them, setting off a furore of discussion over what the ruling or advisory means. Warning: If You Choose A Career In Bitcoin You Might Die Poor And Alone

As I walked by a podcast interview at a recent Bitcoin conference, I was made to laugh. “People say Bitcoin mining isn’t profitable. Well, if you mine Bitcoin now, and if the price goes up, doesn’t that mean Bitcoin was profitable?”  The key word there being “if.” That “if” makes the above-stated proposition nothing more than speculation, but leave it to a Bitcoiner to turn speculation on a nascent technology into a workable business model that people - especially young bitcoiners - can depend upon. The reality in Bitcoin is the general pay for most people is around $10 per […]

Ethereum Ether Cloud Mining Contracts for Genesis Mining

genesis-mining-ether-cloud-mining

The cloud mining service provider Genesis Mining has just announced the immediate availability for Ethereum’s Ether cloud mining contracts. Ethereum is a distributed platform that allows participants to write and enforce their own “smart” contracts. It is sometimes also referred to as “Bitcoin v 2.0”. The alternative cryptocurrency protocol was inter-alia developed by Vitalik Buterin in 2013 and received wide support by community and professionals. The first sale of Ether coins (the currency of Ethereum) raised over $15 million (current market cap nearly $100 million).

The new contracts offered by Genesis Mining will be running for 1 year and will switch from Ether to X11 if Ethereum switches from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake which supposedly will happen end of fall 2016 according to Vitalik. The contracts will enable miners seeking to profit from the Ether value and are structured to maximize profit by all fees occurring upfront instead of throughout the life of the contract. The current price for 1 MHS hashrate for mining Ethereum’s Ether coins is $17.99 USD with all fees included in that price for 1 year duration of the contract.

Here is a quick and simple calculation on what you can expect to get with a 100 MHS Ether Cloud Mining contract for the duration of 1 year that you get will all fees included at $1799 USD when running the number through a mining profitability calculator. 100 MHS hashrate at the current Ethereum network difficulty should supposedly get you about 5 ETH coins per day or for 365 days you should expect to get about 1825 ETH coins if the conditions remain the same. With an exchange rate of about 1 USD per Ether coin at the moment you should in theory get a bit of a profit, however if the price doubles or triples in a year time things will be looking much different. Then again if you buy Ethereum Ether coins at the current price and it doubles in a year things might end up in a similar way for you, but at least you have the alternative available.

As far as we are aware this is the first actual service to offer Ethereum Cloud Mining Contracts, though there were some earlier announcements for new upcoming services that supposedly will be offering Ether cloud mining hashrate, but we haven’t seen any of these actually start operating. The good news is that if you use our special discount code you will also get 5% discount off the regular price for the new Ether cloud mining contracts, so you can get even better deal for the price per GHS – all you have to do is to enter the promo code CryptoMiningBlog5 during the checkout procedure when you order hashrate. Do note that this promo code should also work for the X11 and SHA256 cloud mining contract that the service offers, so do take the advantage of a better price for hashrate should you decide to purchase some cloud mining hashrate at the service.

You can get more information about the new Ether Cloud Mining Contracts by Genesis Mining here…

Bitcoin Debit Cards Now Available from Bitwala

bitwala

The European company Bitwala that provides services for paying bills by transferring Bitcoin to fiat and more recently started offering BTC to PayPal transfers has added a new service – Bitcoin-powered Debit Cards. According to the service the cards should be already available for “Tier 2 verified” customers in the form of a physical or a virtual debit card nominated in Euro. You can order a virtual Bitcoin debit card for 5 EURO or a physical card for 10 Euro with the regular 0.5% percent fee of the service and funds should be credited on the card up 3 business days and often a lot faster according to the information available (during work days it should not take more than a few hours). This means that similar to their BTC to PayPal service the transfer of Bitcoins to your BTC powered debit card will not be immediate and this in the world of crypto currencies is a serious issue. When you want to spend Bitcoins through a debit card that is powered by BTC you will normally want to be able to immediately spend the coins as fiat and not having to wait for up to a few days. Thee are already alternatives for Bitcoin debit cards that we have tried and that offer users to immediately spend their available coins in a wallet or loaded to the card as fiat such as Xapo Bitcoin Debit Card or E-coin Bitcoin Debit Card. Though having more alternatives and different options can be helpful at times, especially in the world of crypto currencies, so this is one more option for a Bitcoin debit card that you can have.

Updated Windows Binary of the ccMiner 1.5.75-git Fork by SP for Maxwell

ccminer-1-5-75-git-spmod

A new update in the form of a Windows binary compiled from the latest Git source code of the ccMiner 1.5.75-git SP-MOD fork by SP optimized for the latest Maxwell-based video cards (source). The new release 75 marks a significant change as the project is now migrated to CUDA 7.5 and is compiled with it as a result the initial release may have slower hashrates for some algorithms than the last CUDA 6.5 release 74. Quark and Lyra2v2 should initially have pretty much the same hashrate while Qubit, X11 and X13 for example should be slightly slower. The most notable decrease in performance is with NeoScrypt, so if you are mining NeoScrypt crypto coins you should not be in a hurry to switch to the 75 release, though we are most likely soon going to see it catching up, so do not forget to support SP with a donation. Do note that the SP-MOD fork of ccMiner is designed for Nvidia Maxwell GPUs such as the already available GTX 750, 750 Ti as well as the newer GTX 960, GTX 970, GTX 980 and GTX 980 Ti and GTX Titan X. The Windows binary release we have made available here is with support for Compute 5.0 and Compute 5.2 GPUs or with other words only for Maxwell-based Nvidia video cards compiled with CUDA 7.5 and VS2013.

First Impressions from the E-Coin Physical Bitcoin Debit Card

e-coin-bitcoin-visa-debit-card

A few days ago we have talked about the E-Coin Bitcoin Debit Card and meanwhile we have also received our physical Bitcoin debit card from the service and have tried it out already. Prior to that we were using a virtual Bitcoin powered debit card that is also being offered by the service, a product that is good only for online payments, but you get it almost immediately and it offers you an easy way to spend Bitcoin at places that do not directly accept BTC payments. But back on the physical Bitcoin powered card that we got from the service, to our surprise it was not branded plastics like the images shown on the official website, instead it comes with a default prepaid Visa debit card design that is supplied by the card partner that is used – in this case it is My Choice – the same partner that Xapo uses for their online Bitcoin-powered cars as well.

bitcoin-debit-card-loading-btc

The E-Coin virtual and physical Bitcoin-powered VISA debit cards do have a separate balance than your balance in the online wallet you also get when you register for the service. This means that once you have some BTC in your E-Coin online wallet they will not be immediately available for use in your Bitcoin debit card, you will have to load some of the coins in the card’s balance in order to be able to use them. This allows you to move only a certain amount of coins in your card whenever you want to make a payment with the amount you need to pay, unlike with the Xapo card where the wallet balance is directly available for use with the card as well. Do note that sending BTC to your E-Coin wallet requires at least 3 network confirmations for the coins to be credited in the wallet and then you can immediately move some of these coins or all of them to the card “loading it” without further waiting time, though these seems to be some small fee for the transfer to the card that you are being charged. When you load the card with BTC you set the amount in coins that you already have in your online wallet an they are being converted to the currency that the card is in such as EURO for example based on the current exchange rate. So you exchange the coins to fiat money when you load the card with the current exchange rate unlike with Xapo for example where the conversion happens when you are actually making the payment from the card.
