Cheap Energy Draws Bitcoin Miners To Northwest, Bringing Discriminatory Rate Hike Controversy

Low electricity rates in Washington and Oregon have attracted bitcoin miners. But the influx has also courted some controversy after one utility along the Columbia River proposed raising rates specifically on the bitcoiners, according to Northwest News Network, a collaboration of public radio stations. Washington and Oregon have low electric rates on account of hydropower dams. The utility, the […]

New and Improved Ethereum Wallet 0.3.9 (Beta 6) Released

ethereum-wallet-latest-beta-shapeshift

The official Ethereum graphical wallet is improving and getting more user friendly with each new beta release, making it easier for people that are not very happy with the console only clients such as geth and eth. The wallet relies on geth (by default) or eth as a backend and provides a user friendly interface with the most important information and functions available to the user without requiring him to type console commands to execute them. The latest Beta 6 release makes it easier to backup your wallet by adding a menu command that takes you directly tot he folder where your wallet is being stored, so the only thing you need to do is to copy the file in a safe location. The new wallet comes with a button called Deposit using Bitcoin that invokes integrated support for ShapeShift allowing you to easily and quickly buy Ether coins and have them easily transferred to your Ethereum wallet. Although the button is called Deposit with Bitcoin you can actually use other altcoins supported by ShapeShift to purchase Ethereum with the needed support built-in right into the wallet. Another useful new addition is that the wallet will now show historical prices from the time of the transaction thanks to integration with the CryptoCompare service, so you will know what was the exact fiat value of the Ethereum transaction at the moment you have made it.

Online Cloud Staking Platform for PoS Crypto Coins

staisybit-1

One of the main issues for users that are into altcoins are coins switching to PoS (Proof of Stake) or supporting both PoW (Proof of Work) and PoS (Proof of Stake) is that they need to run multiple wallets all the time usually with very low interest rate to keep them motivated. Of course the idea of PoS is to keep the network operational and with multiple nodes by stimulating users with rewards to keep their wallets running all the time, but this rarely happens as planned. This is precisely why the user interest usually drops in coins once they go to PoS pretty quick, but there is an interesting solution that might help users not loose interest in PoS coins and avoid the inconvenience of running multiple coin wallets all the time. Staisybit is an online wallet for multiple crypto coins that allows users to keep their coins stored in it and have them staked, earning rewards based on the interest rate that each coin has with very low fees. This will save you the trouble of running multiple wallets that can be heavy on the computer they are installed and require a lot of resources, especially if they are more than just a few coins. The drawback will be a smaller number of users running the wallet and supporting the network of the specific coins as the service runs a single wallet per coin with multiple users, but then again it is also about the convenience of the users.

staisybit-2

Staisybit has been available for a while apparently, but it is not very well known among users apparently and is not very popular, even though it provides interesting service and is easy to use and works well. Currently the service has support for 13 different coins with PoS, they are: Bitz (BITZ), Blackcoin (BLK), Diamond (DMD), Energycoin (ENRG), Europecoin (ERC), Fuelcoin (FUEL), Noblecoin (NOBL), OKCash (OK), Shadowcoin (SDC), Sterlingcoin (SLG), Vericoin (VRC), CoinMagi (XMG) and Quotient (XQN). Once you register (set a secure password with small and big caps and numbers) you need to Open Wallet for the supported coin you like and send in some coins in order for the staking to start. The service can use a bit of polishing and needs some more information and details such as info on all supported coins as some of them might not be familiar to many users etc, but is still quite good and might be useful to some users.

If you are interested in checking out the cloud staking online wallet service…

Revisiting the Coin Magi (XMG) CPU-only Altcoin

m-minerd-xmg-miner

We haven’t paid a lot of attention lately to alternative crypto coins that are mined only with CPU with no GPU, FPGA or ASIC miners, so we’ve decided to check what is going on with Coin Magi (XMG) as we haven’t been following it actively the last few months. Coin Magi is a PoW and PoS coin that is currently being traded for a little over 2000 satoshi per coin, it is being traded on multiple altcoin exchanges including some of the largest ones, though the trade volume at the moment is pretty low and there are multiple pools where you can mine the coin if you do have some spare CPU power available and you are wondering what to mine.

Coin Magi (XMG) uses the M7M algorithm and besides CPU mining and staking coins you can also rent mining rigs at the Mining Rig Rentals service. Last year we have tested the most up to date miner available for XMG – the Wolf0 m7m v2 cpuminer on an Intel Core i7 5820k CPU and now we have retested again in order to compare it with a more recent release in the form of a dedicated m-minerd for XMG (source) that is based on Wolf0’s code. The 32-bit version is significantly slower, so we do recommend to go for the 64-bit miner for best performance, but interestingly enough we are getting slightly less performance for, the new miner. The advantage that the new m-minerd miner for the M7M algorithm has an option for that allows you to set the percentage of CPU usage you want the miner to take.

Intel Core i7 5820k (6C 12T) CPU:
– Wolf0 minerd 64-bit – 122 KHS
– m-minerd 32-bit – 64 KHS
– m-minerd 64-bit – 119 KHS

To download and try the Coin Magi (XMG) m-minerd CPU miner compiled for different OSes…

Vanillacoin (VNL) Forking from WhirlpoolX to Blake256 Algorithm

vanillacoin-logo

Vanillacoin (VNL) has forked to Blake256 as the default Proof-of-Work algorithm from the previously used WhirlpoolX algo, so you need to upgrade your wallet to the new version 0.4.3 and update your mining software as well to support the new Blake algorithm. Do note that the Blake256 algorithm used by Vanillacoin is not exactly the same as the one used by BlakeCoin as VNL uses double sha256 instead of single sha256. Tpruvot has already added support for the new Vanillacoin algorithm in his ccMiner fork (source), so you can use that for mining on Nvidia GPUs and soon we’ll probably see it in other forks as well. Support for the new Blake256 algorithm used by Vanillacoin is also available in a forked cpuminer-multi CPU miner (source) if you want to try CPU mining VNL. Below you can download updated Windows binaries for CPU mining (cpuminer-multi x64), Nvidia GPU mining (ccMiner) and AMD GPU mining (cgminer) if you want to try mining Vanillacoin with the new Blake256 algorithm.

Storj DriveShare Test Group B 2 PB Milestone Reached

storjio-2-pb-milestone

Storj has announced that they have achieved another milestone in their testing phase, passing 2 TB of total storage shared by over 750 users currently participating in the Test Group B running the DriveShare application and sharing free space on their hard drives. Storj still has about 400000 SJCX to distribute as rewards for Test Group B users (users are required to have at least 10000 SJCX in their wallet in order to receive rewards from the beta testing). The Test Group B will continue to run until the promised rewards are distributed and then Test Group C will be launched which will be focused on testing actual file transfers on the P2P network including latency, bandwidth, throughput and more. For the moment the software only generates dummy data on the user’s hard drive for the shared amount of storage and does not download or upload it, so the next testing step will be focused on that part of the functionality of the service.

Recently we have posted a short guide on how you can participate in the Test Group B using the latest version of the DriveShare GUI software along with our experience going through the process of creating a StorjCoin X wallet and getting more than 10000 SJCX in it in order to be eligible for the rewards in Test Group B, so we are going to keep you updated on the testing progress and future development. You can test the DriveShare GUI software even if you do not have the 10000 SJCX coins in your wallet, but then you will not be eligible for getting rewards for your efforts. With that said if you are in for the rewards you should not expect to get too much SJCX coins as a reward for your help at the end of each month for participating in the testing phase, the rewards are there more as a token of gratitude for helping in the development of the service.

It the last few days we have seen a rapid increase in price of the Ethereum’s Ether coins on the exchanges with the price of 1 Ether coin trying to reach the $3 USD mark and getting closer and close to the price of Litecoin. This has sparked a lot of user interest among users that are new to Ethereum and that have not yet mined it with their GPUs, so we’ve seen a lot of new miners joining the Ethereum mining and a lot of interest in cloud mining for Ethereum as well. AMD GPUs are generally doing better than Nvidia-based ones for mining Ethereum, though you can mine with both. For the moment the only service that is offering Ethereum cloud mining is Genesis Mining with 1 year mining contracts starting at $17.99 USD per MHS. The minimum contract you can purchase is 3 MHS and each contract includes all fees in the price of the hashrate, so there is no additional maintenance fee associated with it. The total network hashrate of the Bitcoin network has reached another major milestone, passing over 1 Exahash per second or 1000 Petahashes per second peaking at 1,008,642,232 GHS according to the data from Blockchain.info. Interestingly enough the total network hashrate at the previous difficulty adjustment on January 13th was just about 811 Petahashes and back in November last year the hashrate was just about 500 Petahashes per second or half than what it is now. This is really serious and fast growth of the total network hashrate that Bitcoin is experiencing doubling in just about two months. So what comes next after Exahashes per second, can you guess when the network hashrate will get to Zettabytes or Yottabytes… maybe we are going to see these in the near future if it continues to grow at such fast pace.

New ccMiner Fork from DJM34 With Faster NeoScrypt

ccminer-djm34-neoscrypt

After a crowdfunding effort to accumulate 2.5 BTC from users DJM34 has released a faster open source NeoScrypt kernel (source). Apart from the NeoScrypt the rest is based on the latest ccMiner form from SP version 1.5.78 that uses CUDA 7.5, so it is pretty much useful only if you are mining NeoScrypt-based altcoin. We have compiled a Windows 32-bit binary of the new ccminer djm34 neoscrypt fork with faster NeoScrypt using VS2013 and CUDA 7.5 as well as CUDA 6.5 (two versions available), compatible only with Nvidia Maxwell GPUs (Compute 5.0 and 5.2). Below we have compared the Neoscrypt performance using GTX 970 of this new release with the ccMiner 1.5.74 from SP with CUDA 6.5 and ccMiner 1.5.78 from sp with CUDA 7.5 to see what is the performance gain. Note that the initial ccMiner releases from SP with CUDA 7.5 had brought a significant drop in performance in the NeoScrypt algorithm, so it was best to use 1.5.74 with CUDA 6.5 for NeoScrypt.

NeoScrypt GTX 970 hashrate performance:
– ccMiner 1.5.74 CUDA 6.5 SPMOD fork: 525 KHS
– ccMiner 1.5.78 CUDA 7.5 SPMOD fork: 275 KHS
– ccMiner djm34 neoscrypt 6.5 from djm34: 632 KHS
– ccMiner djm34 neoscrypt 7.5 from djm34: 611 KHS

Note that the comparison with 1.5.78 is with an earlier release that did not include the latest NeoScrypt kernel from djm34, because it seems that SP has integrated it in the latest GitHub code after the code has been released by djm34.

Dash Block Size Increase to 2 MB Has Been Accepted

dash-logo

While the Bitcoin debate around the block size continues the alternative crypt currency Dash, formerly known as DarkCoin, has shown how a consensus about an increase of the block size can be reached quickly and efficiently. By holding a vote among its stakeholders to increase its blocksize, even if there is not yet immediate need of such an increase, from 1 MB to 2 MB a consensus has been reached within 24 hours with 99 percent of the vote for the increase. Currently each block of Dash contains less than 10 transactions on average and is justa few kilobytes in size, so there is not much need of 2 MB block size, however with the developers expecting the blocksize to grow over time the need for further increase in the not so near future can be avoided (learning from Bitcoin).

According to Coinmarketcap Dash is currently the 5th crypto currency in terms of Market Cap, however you can also say it is the third one after BTC and LTC if you take out Ripple and Ethereum due to the first being pre-mined completely and the second one with a very large initial pre-mine. Dash has some interesting and useful advantages as compared ot Bitcoin and some other crypto currencies including much faster transaction times, offering more anonymity and still being mined with GPUs only (no ASICs) using the popular X11 algorithm. Lately there have been some interesting and positive news regarding Dash that have also resulted in the price of the altcoin increasing a bit in the last few days.

MiningSweden and the Expected Extra Payment for VIP Shares

mining-sweden

The Bitcoin cloud mining service MiningSweden is now almost one year old now, though we have started testing and using the service back in May last year. The interesting thing about the company is that it offers two types of the so called mining shares that get you Bitcoin cloud mining hashrate – standard and VIP shares. The slightly more expensive VIP shares are supposed to provide users with extra profit based on the number of shares owned and the total profit of the company behind the project, besides the standard cloud mining hashrate that brings you mining profits. The extra payment that the VIP shares will bring their owners is supposed to be paid after the end of March when the company will close the business year and its profits will be calculated. So payments will be sent to VIP share owners in April most likely and we are going to finally see how the extra investment for VIP shares will pay out over the standard mined coins we got from the cloud mining hashrate.

Meanwhile there are still more VIP shares available (over forty thousand) from the total of 100K that were supposed to be available and sold to users, so you can buy not only standard mining shares with 20 GHS cloud mining hashrate per share for $9.69 USD at the moment, but also VIP shares in promotional multiple packs. You can currently get 1 VIP share along with 10 GHS cloud mining hashrate for $6.90 USD, pack of 10 VIP shares with 100 GHS for $68.25 USD, pack of 50 VIP shares with 500 GHS for $325 USD or 100 VIP shares with 1000 GHS for $614 USD. So far our experience using the service has been one of the most problem free and pleasant ones among all cloud mining services that we have tried, so we would recommend to check out the service if you have not done so. The only thing that we have found somewhat lacking is the lack of more regular information and updates with news, something that is somewhat of a general problem for many such services.

For more information about the service and to start cloud mining Bitcoins with Mining Sweden…

Building an 8 TB Storage Solution for Storj’s DriveShare

driveshare-earnings-calculator

Recently we have tried the beta of the latest Version of Storj DriveShare GUI, a service that is intended to allow you to warn money by sharing your extra hard drive space. Although it is still not ready to be launched and you could have some issues getting to try it out, this Blockchain-based cloud storage service does look very promising. While participating in the currently ongoing beta test of the DriveShare service we’ve went on to figure out how to easily build a reliable and affordable 8TB home storage solution that can be used with the service for earning money via the Storjcoin X (SJCX) crypto currency tokens that Storj uses. Going through the earnings calculator that estimates how much can you earn sharing 8 TB of storage via the service we are getting over $230 USD estimate per month if all of the space is being used by users of the service, so it is not a guarantee that you will be earning this much for sure. So our goal was to build 8 TB storage solution with less than what you can earn in 6 months based on the earnings estimate or with other words less than $1380 USD.

8-tb-hp-microserver

Going through various small home NAS (Network Attached Storage) solutions and different small server data storage solutions we have found out an interesting choice that is compact, affordable and easy to be used by not so advanced users – the HP ProLiant MicroServer. More specifically the HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 G1610T 1P 4GB-U B120i Non-hot Plug SATA Server(819185-001) that is available for a about $450 USD and that only needs you to install hard drives and do the software setting up like you would with a normal PC. The MicroServer comes with 4GB of memory and a Dual-Core Intel Celeron G1610T processor, along with Gigabit network support and 4 drive bays for hard drives.

The hardware specs of the MicroServer should be more than enough for this kind of a storage solution, so all we need now are four hard drives with 2 TB capacity each for a total of 8 TB capacity. You could go for larger capacity HDDs, however the larger the capacity, the higher the price per drive will be, so at the moment 2 Terabytes offers a good price/capacity ratio and since we have 4 drive bays we can go for 4x 2 TB without having to worry about anything. There are two good options available for the hard drives, the Western Digital Red hard drives with 2 TB going for $90 USD per drive or the 2 TB Red Pro drives for $134 USD per drive. The normal Red series is intended for smaller NAS solutions, offers a bit slower performance and comes with 3 years warranty for a lower price and the Red Pro series is for more serious storage solutions with 5 years warranty, better performance and extra technologies for better reliability. So with 4x 2 TB Red drives we need to spend $360 USD for HDDs and with 4x 2 TB Red Pro drives you need to spend $536 USD or along with the HP MicroServer the total would be either $810 USD or $986 USD. Both choices would put us below the 6 month earnings estimate from DriveShare, so our goal is achieved. Now all that we need is the the service to finish testing and launch in order for such a solution to become interesting alternative to crypto currency mining by offering a home storage solution.

For more details about the Storj’s DriveShare storage project currently in beta…

How Much Bitcoins Can You Mine with 1 THS Hashrate

1-ths-bitcoin-mining

We have compiled a short table showing how much Bitcoin you could mine with 1 THS hashrate starting November 1st up until the estimate for February 1st this year. This period covers 3 months and as you can see the coins mined for just these 3 months pretty much halved due to the rapid increase in the network hashrate and thus the network difficulty. The table shows the numbers of coins you could expect to have mined without any cost for electricity for own hosted mining hardware or maintenance fees for cloud mining. The end result is pretty much the same however – the profit for miners has declined significantly, especially for the ones using older hardware with more electricity being used.

What some of you might not remember that well already is that prior to November last year the exchange rate of Bitcoin was in the $200-230 USD range and around November 1st it was already in the three hundreds, briefly peaking up to about $500 USD. For the last three months the price of BTC has essentially almost doubled, so considering that the difficulty has also doubled miners should still be getting roughly the same amount of USD when they convert the mined BTC, even though the coins mined are half of what they were before.

Later this year another important event for Bitcoin is going to take place, in about 6 months we are expecting to see the second halving of BTC block reward from from 25 to 12.5 coins. This essentially means that the coins mined will yet again drop in half with many expecting that the price of Bitcoin will compensate by increasing further from the level it is now. If this happens we might as well see 1 BTC traded for about $1000 USD as early as this summer…

To keep track of the remaining time you can check the Bitcoin Block Reward Halving countdown here…

DIY Ethereum Raspberry Pi 2 Cryptocurrency Node

raspnode

Raspnode is a project created to help people get Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Ethereum nodes, wallets, and related cryptocurrency software on their Raspberry Pi 2 micro computers. Raspnode was launched last year as a Kickstarter project, but now the project’s website also contains detailed guides on how to run a full node for Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Ethereum. Since Bitcoin and Litecoin are already “old news” you might be more interested in how to setup a RPi 2 system with a full Ethereum node using the Go Ethereum client (geth) or Python Ethereum client (PyEthApp). The guides are comprehensive and detailed enough, so that they should be easy to understand and be followed by not so advanced users, so you might want to give them a go if you have an unused Raspberry Pi 2 lying around.

Bitcoin Hard Fork to 2 MB Blocksize with Bitcoin Classic

bitcoinclassic-logo

The Bitcoin Blocksize debate has been going on for quite some time already with different opinions on how it should be increased from the current limit of 1 MB, one thing is clear however in all the discussions – we must increase the Blocksize in order to accommodate the increasing number of transactions. Looking at the average BTC Blocksize we are already seeing that at peak periods with more transactions we are easily hitting 0.8 MB with 500-700 KB seeming quite normal sizes for blocks in the last few months, so we are looking at 1 MB Blocksize to become too small pretty soon and we need a solution for that problem fast in order to avoid possible issues with the Bitcoin network. While there might not be a consensus on how the Blocksize should grow in the future and what should the Blocksize change over time, we need to increase the limit now.

Doubling the Bitcoin Blocksize to 2 MB with a hard fork what the Bitcoin Classic project has as a goal is something that can be the immediate solution that we need, but still this will not be enough for the long term future of BTC. Increasing the Blocksize to 2 MB is the short term solution that could allow the Bitcoin network to continue growing and functioning normally while we figure out what should the next step be in order to ensure the future of Bitcoin. Bitcoin Classic is already supported by major developers, many of the large mining operators, mining hardware makers and Bitcoin-oriented companies. The project has not yet made a release, but the source code is available on GitHub, so you might want to keep a track on how things are developing.

Crytpsy Finally Tells The Truth for the Ongoing Issues

cryptsy-announcement

It seems that the source of all the trouble people had with Cryptsy in the last months were caused by a hack of the crypto currency exchange that has happened over 1 year ago in which there were about 13000 BTC and 300000 LTC stolen. The big question is why Cryptsy is coming clean to its users just now and all this time they were trying to basically lie them about the various issues with coin withdraws at the exchange. It seems that they tried to cover up things expecting to recover the lost coins, but they were not able to and as a result they only prolonged the inevitable. It could be also this announcement that has resulted in the decline of the Bitcoin price we are now seeing on US and EU exchanges, while at Asian exchanges the price of BTC is still higher.
