Ethereum Hardforking to Homestead at Block 1150000

ethereum-logo

The Ethereum project has released an official update regarding the next phase called Homestead that will need a hardfork and that will take place at block 1150000 or roughly around Pi Day (March 14th). Homestead is the second major version release of the Ethereum platform, which includes several protocol changes and a networking change that requires the hardfork. This does not mean that Ethereum will be switching to PoS yet, Homestead will continue to rely only on PoW mining with Proof of Stake switch phase planned for a later time in the future. After the Homestead hardfork everything should continue to run normally as it is now.

The Go version of Ethereum (geth) for Homestead will be release 1.3.4 and includes the above mentioned changes to the protocol and network. Following the release of Homestead the Go team will also shortly come with the 1.4 release, which is our big feature release and includes months of work. The C++ version of Ethereum (eth) for Homestead will be version 1.2.0. Apart from the protocol and network changes, it also tries to be as compatible to geth as possible. So make sure you keep track of the development in the newt two weeks as you will have to upgrade your Ethereum client if you are running a local node or have a local wallet when the new versions with support for Homestead become available.

New Raspberry Pi 3 Announced, Faster and with WiFi and Bluetooth

raspberry-pi-3-model-b

Most crypto currency miners should be very familiar with the Raspberry Pi, the small and inexpensive Linux-based “computer” that is often used to run big ASIC miners without the need of a dedicated powerful PC. The RPi however can be used for other things such as running a full Bitcoin or other crypto currency node with the help of a large USB drive or running a wallet for PoS for example. So the announcement of a new faster Raspberry Pi 3 could be of interest to a lot of people, especially considering the fact that the new model comes with built-in WiFi and the price remains the same as with the old model 2 – $35 USD, with the RPi 2 still available for anyone that needs it.

Raspberry Pi 3 Specifications:
– Processor: Broadcom BCM2387 chipset, 1.2GHz Quad-Core ARM Cortex-A53, 802.11 b/g/n Wireless LAN and Bluetooth 4.1 (Bluetooth Classic and LE)
– GPU: Dual Core VideoCore IV Multimedia Co-Processor. Provides Open GL ES 2.0, hardware-accelerated OpenVG, and 1080p30 H.264 high-profile decode. Capable of 1Gpixel/s, 1.5Gtexel/s or 24GFLOPs with texture filtering and DMA infrastructure
– Memory: 1GB LPDDR2
– Operating System: Boots from Micro SD card, running a version of the Linux operating system or Windows 10 IoT
– Dimensions: 85 x 56 x 17mm
– Power: Micro USB socket 5V, 2.5A

Raspberry Pi 3 Connectors:
– Ethernet: 10/100 BaseT Ethernet socket
– Video: Output HDMI (rev 1.3 & 1.4 Composite RCA (PAL and NTSC)
– Audio Output: Audio Output 3.5mm jack, HDMI,
– USB: 4 x USB 2.0 Connector
– GPIO Connector: 40-pin 2.54 mm (100 mil) expansion header: 2×20 strip providing 27 GPIO pins as well as +3.3 V, +5 V and GND supply lines
– Camera Connector: 15-pin MIPI Camera Serial Interface (CSI-2)
– Display Connector: Display Serial Interface (DSI) 15 way flat flex cable connector with two data lanes and a clock lane
– Memory Card Slot: Push/pull Micro SDIO

The dimensions and layout of the new Raspberry Pi 3 Model B are the same as with the RPi 2 Model B including the connectors, so it should be compatible as a direct replacement for the older unit if you are already using it for a project. The faster CPU can be a good upgrade for tasks requiring more processing power such as running a crypto currency node, the GPU is the same as with the old model, but clocked higher and you get WiFi and Bluetooth built-in for easier wireless network and peripheral connectivity.

Building a Multi Terabyte Storage Solution for Mining and Sharing

supermicro-file-storage-1

With different projects like Storj, Sia or Burst the use of hard drives and storage space tied to crypto currency mining or sharing files with crypto token rewards may become more attractive to users. With hard drive sizes growing and solutions available for building multi terabyte storage systems available building a multi-terabyte storage solution for use with the projects mentioned above might be viable. We’ve already covered a more affordable home user option for Building an 8 TB Storage Solution for Storj’s DriveShare, but there are options for much larger scale solutions that are still not too expensive, though probably still above the budget of the average home users. You need to look at more serious server companies for products that are designed for file servers for examples as we are going to be using a Supermicro solution for hosting 24 HDDs in a single rack-mountable chassis. The solution you are seeing here is not particularly designed for use with Burst, Sia or Storj, but we wanted to give it a try using it for them to get an idea what you may expect.

supermicro-file-storage-2

The 4U chassis used from Supermicro is designed for file servers in a rack-mountable format, supporting 24 3.5-inch hard drives, though the company offers many different products for 2.5 and 3.5-inch drives all the way up to 90 drives per system and apart from complete solutions you also have the option to go for HDD expanders for many drives that are being connected to separate systems. We have used 24 hard drives from Hitachi with a capacity of 6 TB which in theory should result in 144TB of storage space (in non RAID configuration with mirroring or spare drives), but in reality due to how HDD capacity is being calculated we are actually getting just 130 TB of usable space. For the purpose of the already mentioned crypto related projects you’d probably want to go for more space than redundancy, especially if you are building such a solution with that many hard drives.

supermicro-file-storage-3

Storj and Sia are supposed to ensure redundancy and data availability by replicating user stored data or multiple systems and for Burst that uses HDD space for mining you may just regenerate the plots in case you have a problem with any of the hard drives available. With Storj’s DriveShare you may have multiple drives shared, but with SIA or Burst you may have to do a HDD spanning configuration, so that all of the available space will be usable as a single drive. What you should be well aware of is the time it may take to fill up a very large space such as 130 TB with data using any of the projects. It will take literally days to generate HDD plots of that size for Burst mining, or to generate test data for the Storj DriveShare service as it currently does not store user data while still in testing phase. For Sia that already has an operating network and users are actually sharing data the waiting time to actually utilize that free space might take months and you needing to have a low price to attract more users. So at this point in time you probably can go with much smaller storage solutions and a 24-drive monster like this might be a bit overkill, especially considering the amount of money you will need to pay for the hardware and the expected ROI for using it as a mining medium or storage sharing solution that you get paid for. But then again, if you need to build one for different tasks and you have some free space on it you might want to give the three mentioned services a go…

Check Out the YoBit Altcoin Cryptocurrency Exchange

yobit-altcoin-exchange

There are quite a lot of large crypto currency exchanges that are focused on the mail crypto currencies such as Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, DOGE and a few more. When talking about altcoins however there are not that much options available that have a large number of coins available for trading, especially when talking about more recent coin launches. The first two large ones that come in mind are of course Bittrex and Poloniex, but getting an altcoin listed there and keeping it long term may not be that easy. So here comes YoBit, one of the biggest altcoin exchanges at the moment that currently has 467 active trading pairs and and some daily trading volume on at least half of them.

It is not just an crypto currency exchange however, as on YoBit you also have a built-in Dice game that seems to support all currencies in the exchange, free coin giveaways for many coins with the ability to claim free coins as well as to donate coins for the giveaways, there is even a coin info database to help you easily find more information for an altcoin you might not be familiar with. The exchange is also running coin ICOs as well as has free and paid listing options available for including new coins, something that can be useful for new coin developers that want to get their new project up and running on an exchange.

How to Keep Track of the Different Bitcoin Nodes

nodecounter

One of the main things that has pushed the development of alternatives to the Bitcoin Core software is the ongoing debate about the blocksize and more specifically if and how it should evolve over time in order to cope up with the growing number of Bitcoin users and the increase of the number of transactions. So now apart from Bitcoin Core we also have Bitcoin Classic, Bitcoin Unlimited and Bitcoin XT as major alternatives and there are already quite a lot of nodes running a different software than the Core one. The website Node Counter allows you to easily keep track of the number of different nodes in the Bitcoin network and what version of the Bitcoin software they are running as well as how things are changing over time. Looking at the graphs we can clearly see that the support for 2MB or larger blocksize is growing, but still the number of Core nodes that are keeping the 1MB blocksize is a few times larger. Bitcoin Classic is getting significant increase in support and is currently with about 1/4 of the size of the number of Core nodes, followed by Bitcoin XT and Bitcoin Unlimited that have been recently loosing support most likely in favor of the Classic implementation. If you are interested in how thing are developing you can keep track on Node Counter or another of the many new websites with similar goal that have popped up recently.

Visit the website Node Counter for more details about the available different Bitcoin nodes…

DCRstats, a One Page Decred Network Status Overview

dcrstats-website

The Decred (DCR) crypto currency is still fairly new and although it needs more work to become a more user friendly altcoin things are already happening with the latest useful addition being the website DCRstats. A single page website that presents a lot of useful information to help you keep track of what is happening with the Decred network at the moment – how is the price changing, what s the current difficulty and network hashrate, the average block time, the ticket price for PoS, how is the block reward distributed and how and when it will change and some more useful graphs and charts. You may even get some useful advice such as to not buy tickets for PoS at the moment, because the price is high and how much time you will need to wait for the next PoS difficulty adjustment to get a better price if you are staking Decred coins. So in short a website to keep a track of if you are mining, trading or just interested in how things are moving on with Decred (DCR) or to get a quick and good overview of the current situation. The best of all is that the project is open source, so you can check the code on GitHub and maybe even help in further improvement and development to make it even more useful and practical than it already is.

iBeLink DM384 Specification and Users Manual Now Available

ibelink-miner-oc

DualMiner has published a short PDF document named iBeLink DM384 Specification and Users Manual that gives a bit more details on what to expect from the X11 ASIC miner. Apparently this is the electronic version of the manual that will be shipped with the device, the document is labeled as revision 1.1 dated from February 18th with the 1.0 revision dated from January 22 2016. The document includes some screenshots from the miner’s web interface that is apparently running on the Raspberry Pi that controls the 4 miner blades that the device has. The document reveals some interesting things such as the ability to easily overclock the miner by changing the chip PLL settings. It might however be limited in terms of maximum overclock capabilities over the stock settings judging from the screenshots in the manual. There are however not that many new details about the device revealed in the document, still you might want to check it out if you are interested in the iBeLink DM384 X11 ASIC miners. As already mentioned earlier today we have pre-ordered a unit, so we’ll be doing a detailed review once it arrives, so stay tuned for more details when we get our hands on the hardware hopefully soon.

Hashflare To Start Offering Ethereum Cloud Mining

hashflare-ethereum-cloud-mining

The cloud mining service provider Hashflare has officially announced their plans to start offering Ethereum cloud mining hashrate with pre-orders already active and mining expected to start on March 21st. The contracts are with 1 year term with everything included in the price of the hashrate, so no extra expenses for the user. The price is set at $4.25 USD per 100 KHS (0.1 MHS) or with other words $42.25 USD per Megahash worth of Ethereum mining hashrate. There is currently a promotional offer for pre-orders that will allow you to purchase hashrate at a discounted price of $3.74 USD per 100 KHS or $37.4 USD per MHS (12% discount for the pre-orders) if you use the following promotional code when checking out HF16ETHER12.

The service is already offering Bitcoin and Litecoin cloud mining hashrate contracts, though both are being paid to users in BTC. Their new Ethereum cloud mining offer is apparently based on what Genesis Mining is already offering, though Hashflare apparently wants to attract customers with a lower price. The problem is that they have announced their plans about 1 month prior to actually starting to mine Ethereum and for that 1 month a lot can change – much higher mining difficulty or significant drop in price etc. that makes this investment riskier. There is also no information what will happen with the purchased hashrate in case Ethereum switches to PoS before the end of the 1 year term of the contract. So be careful when weighting in the pros and cons of this offer.

The Latest Ethminer 0.9.41-genoil-1.0.4b3 for Windows

ethminer-benchmark-280x

Ethminer 0.9.41-genoil-1.0.4b3 (source) is the latest release of Genoil’s CUDA miner forked from the official ethminer that is designed to work on Nvidia CUDA GPUs, but will also work on AMD OpenCL GPUs as well. The latest version adds some useful features for both AMD and Nvidia miners, though there is not much of a difference in terms of performance compared to older releases, so do not expect to see faster hashrate. In fact the hashrate on AMD GPUs has been decreasing over time due to the increasing size od the DAG files used by the miner for mining Ethereum’s Ether (ETH) coins.

The latest release contains more advanced benchmark options that allow you to check how performance changed or will change in time, there is an option to set a custom DAG storage folder and even support for stratum mining without a proxy, although currently limited to support only for Coinotron with more pools to come. We ran a quick test to check how the hashrate changed over time between block 1 and block 1 million of Ethereum on an AMD Radeon R9 280X GPU and on Nvidia Geforce GTX 970 GPU. As you can see from the results below the performance has dropped quite a bit on AMD, but has not changed on Nvidia, do note however that Nvidia-based video cards are slower in terms of mining performance for Ethereum… at least for the moment.

GeForce GTX 970:
Block 1 – 17.31 MHS
Block 1M – 17.31 MHS

Bitcoin Price In Speculative Correction

Bitcoin price has fallen out of an awkward advance channel that failed to make a new high. Updated ccMiner 1.7.3 fork by tpruvot With Improved Decred Support

ccminer-1-7-3-tpruvot-decred

A quick update with a new Windows binary compiled from the latest ccMiner 1.7.3-git fork from tpruvot (source) with some improvements regarding the Decred (DCR) that uses a bit different Blake256 14-round algorithm. This release supports Decred mining with both the traditional getwork implementation as well as the getwork over stratum support that yiimp and some other pools have already implemented. The release below includes two versions of ccMiner, one is 32-bit binary for Windows that is compiled with CUDA 6.5 and with support for Compute 2.0 or newer Nvidia GPUs, and another that is 64-bit Windows binary compiled with CUDA 7.5 for Compute 3.5 or newer Nvidia GPUs. Do note that if you have a newer Nvidia video card you should use the 64-bit CUDA 7.5 release as it is providing better hashrate than the 32-bit CUDA 6.5 binary. Below is a quick comparison of the performance of the two versions on a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 WF3OC GPU running at stock frequencies.

Decred (DCR) performance on GTX 970:
– 32-bit CUDA 6.5: 1189 MHS
– 64-bit CUDA 7.5: 1298 MHS

New sgminer 5.3.0 Nicehash With Optimized NeoScrypt and Blake256 Support

sgminer-5-3-0-nicehash

We have not posted new releases of sgminer binaries for Windows for quite some time as there was nothing that much happening on the AMD GPU mining scene as compared to the development for the Nvidia GPU miners with ccMiner. But it is time for an update with the sgminer 5.3.0 the nicehash fork (source code), because the official development of sgminer on GitHub isn’t going anywhere for quite some time. The sgminer 5.3.0 nicehash adds an improved NeoScrypt kernel as well as support for the new Blake256 8 and 14 round algorithms including Vanillacoin (VNL), though there is no support for Decred mining available in this release. The Windows binary available for download is a 32-bit one, so it should offer better compatibility on more mining systems running a Windows operating system.

Red Envelopes With Free Hashrate Promotion from OXBTC

oxbtc-red-envelopes

The crypto mining and deposits with interest platform OXBTC has announced a Red Envelopes promotion in celebration to the Chinese New Year. This promotion allows newly registered users to get some free Bitcoin cloud mining hashrate at the platform absolutely free for 1 month. Depending on your luck you, when you open your Red Envolope, you might win between 1 GHS and 1000 GHS and the hashrate you get will be available in your account for 1 month and you get to keep all of the profits it generates without having to invest or buy anything. The duration of the promotion is between February 22nd and March 6th, so don’t miss your chance to get some free hashrate for a month and earn some extra BTC.

This promotion is probably in order to stimulate more people to buy cloud mining hashrate at the platform as apparently there is not much interest from users as expected with the high prices for hashrate. The initial price of $0.499 USD per GHS with $0.0009 USD per GHS per day maintenance fee was not very attractive and while there is now a new price at $0.399 USD per GHS with $0.0007 USD per GHS per day maintenance fee it is still not too attractive with the recent jumps in Bitcoin’s network hashrate and difficulty. The $13 USD per MHS for Litecoin cloud mining hashrate is also pretty high (Maintenance Fee: $0.02 / MHS / Day), even though LTC has shown pretty stable difficulty level and price for quite a while making it more predictable for profit calculation on the long term. With the not so great track record that the company previously had with the ZeusHash it is no wonder that they are not doing great with hashrate sales in this new platform as well, but when they give you free hashrate why not take it anyway.

Unfortunately their deposits with interest service is getting less attractive than it was before with Current Deposits down from 0.02% daily to 0.01% (cut in half) and the 30-Day Fixed Deposits are down from 15% APY to just 7%. Interestingly enough the HalleyBTC Bitcoin savings investment platform operated by the same people still has the same 0.02% daily interest rate and 15% APY for 3-day fixed deposits.

NiceHash Has Added Ethereum and Blake256 Support

nicehash-blake256-ethereum

The service for renting or selling your hashrate for various mining algorithms with direct payment in Bitcoin, NiceHash, has added support for Ethereum’s Dagger-Hashimoto algorithm as well as for Blake256r8, Blake256r14 and modified Blake256r8vnl (Vanillacoin) algorithms. Do note however that the Blake256 14-rounds used by Decred is not yet supported, so be careful when setting up your miners for the Blake256 algorithms regardless if buying or selling your hashrate on the service. The usage for Ethereum mining is pretty much the same like what you would go for with a normal ETH pool that does not have stratum implemented. The Decred Altcoin is About To Start Their PoS Phase

decred-stake-pool

The Decred (DCR) altcoin that has been generatijng a lot of attention lately is essentially a PoW + PoS crypto coin, however before the block 4096 it is going to be in Proof or Work mode and after that you would be able not only to mine, but also to Stake the coins you own in order to earn more DCR. The Decred block reward is divided in three parts: 60% for a mining, 30% for staking and 10% for the developers with a starting block reward of 31.19582664 DCR coins. This means that the PoW reward for a block is currently about 18.72 DCR, the total PoS rewards is going to be about 9.36 DCR (it could be divided in multiple parts) and the remaining about 3.12 DCR goes to the developers. Furthermore the per-block reward adjusts every 6144 blocks (approximately 21.33 days) by reducing by a factor of 100/101 or with other words ((31.19582664 * 100) / 101) for the first halving.

Since in a couple of hours we are going to reach the 4096 block and the PoS phase will also become active you could start staking any mined DCR coins that you have available in your wallet. Decred staking is a bit different than what most other coins use as a method for PoS and the fact that there is still no official GUI wallet and you need to use the command line wallet to activate staking makes it even harder for non advanced users. To enable staking you need to add the extra command line parameter “enablestakemining”, though there are some extra options also available that might help you such as the max price you pay for ticket or the minimum balance to maintain in your wallet.

Staking in Decred works in a similar way to a lottery, you purchase tickets with the available DCR coins you have (ticket price starts at 2 DCR), then wait for your ticket to be randomly chosen to validate a block or to be taken out of the lottery in 142 days. The coins you use for staking (purchasing tickets for the lottery) will be locked until they are either chosen and you get a reward or 142 days pass. According to the information the lottery lasts about 28 days average and the chance of a ticket not being selected in 142 days are less than 1%, but we’ll have to wait and see. Do note that in order to be successfully staking you need to have your wallet running and online 24/7 and have the wallet unlocked, otherwise you might miss your chance of winning.

The Decred team is also working on a PoS pool where you can delegate your voting rights and participate in the staking without having to run a local wallet all the time in order to stake and you don’t need to send DCR coins anywhere. There is already a test Decred Stake Pool running on the testnet, but you’ll have to wait for the staking phase to start and a pool for the mainnet to become available.

CryptoChainer, Downloadable Blockchains for Faster Wallet Synchronization

cryptochainer

One of the most annoying things when you run a wallet for a given crypto currency for the first time is the waiting for it to download and synchronzie all of the blockchain. The older the crypto currency and the larger the blockchain is, the more time it takes to get in sync and in the case of Bitcoin a full blockchain download and synchronization can literally take days. But it is not only bitcoin, there are quite a few altcoins as well that are a few years old already and have big blockchains that can take some time as well, and while some coins offer blockchain archives you can download before running the wallet to speedup the synchronization they are actually not that many.

CryptoChainer is a website that offers quick and easy access to downloads for many altcoin blockchains. Using these blockchain archives, your wallet will be synchronized quicker than it would normally take, tough it may still be a process taking quite some time. All you have to do is download the desired blockchain archive and extract it in the folder that the specific altcoin uses for blockchain storage data files. If you already have a working wallet or are restoring one from a backup, then you might have to do a resynchronization in order for your balance to appear correctly in the wallet GUI.

CryptoChainer currently has blockchain archives available for the following altcoins: 1337 Coin, 42 Coin, 8bit, AlienCoin, AnonCoin, ArchCoin, AudioCoin, Axiom, BBQ Coin, BetaCoin, BitBat, BitBay, Bitbean, BitcoinDark, BitcoinScrypt, BlackCoin, BlueCoin, Boolberry, Boolberry, Bottlecaps, BTCTalkCoin, CannabisCoin, CannaCoin, Cash, CasinoCoin, Chip, CLAM, CoinMagi XMG, ColossusCoin V2, ContinuumCoin, Crave, CrownCoin, CryptCoin, CryptoBullion, Cryptonite, Dash, Denarius, Diamond, Digibyte, DigiCube, DigitalCoin, DigitByte, DNotes, DogeCoin, DogeCoinDark, EarthCoin, Einsteinium, Emerald, EuropeCoin, EvergreenCoin, ExclusiveCoin, FeatherCoin, FedoraCoin TIPS, Fibre, Fibre, FireFlyCoin, FlutterCoin, FlyCoin, Franko, Franko, GameCredits, GeoCoin, GoldCoin, GoldPieces, Gulden, HamRadioCoin, HempCoin, HoboNickels, HTML5, Hyper, Hyper, HyperStake, IncaKoin, Influx, IsraCoin, JouleCoin, KittehCoin, LeafCoin, LGBTQoin, LiteCred, LycanCoin, MasterTraderCoin, Maza, MegaCoin, MinCoin, MintCoin, MMXVI, MonaCoin, MoonCoin, MurrayCoin, MyriadCoin, NavajoCoin, NetCoin, NeuCoin, Neutron, Neutron, NobleCoin, NovaCoin, NyanCoin, OK Cash, OKCash, Parallel, PayCON, Pennies, Philosopher Stone, Positron, PotCoin, Primecoin, Quark, Quatloo, Quotient, RateCoin, ReddCoin, RonPaulCoin, RubyCoin V2, SecretCoin, Sembro Token, SexCoin, Shadow, Sling, SmartCoin, Sprouts, Sprouts Extreme, StableCoin, StartCoin V2, Steps, SterlingCoin, Stress, Stronghands, SuperTurboStake, Sync, Synergy, Synergy, TagCoin, TekCoin, Terracoin, TruckCoin, TurboStake, UFOCoin, UltraCoin, UnbreakableCoin, Verge, VeriCoin, VertCoin, ViaCoin, Voxels, Warp, Warp, WhiteCoin v2, WildBeastCoin, WorldCoin, X-Coin, Xaurum, XCash, YellowCoin and ZiftrCoin.

Each hashing blade contains 48 TNB0301 ASIC chips, and can be managed (or controlled) for mining separately. The total hashrate of one unit is supposed to be 384 MHS with a total power consumption of 715 W. We could not find any additional information other than what is posted by DualMiner who will apparently be selling the first units of the device, so we are not yet able to confirm for sure if this is real X11 ASIC miner. We are going to be keeping a close eye on this as it really seems a very promising alternative to GPU mining of X11 and could easily bring the end of X11 mining with video cards if true.

Decred (DCR) Mining on Nvidia with Getwork Over Stratum

ccminer-1-7-3-tpruvot-decred

Tpruvot, one of the ccMiner developers has released a test version of his fork with Decred (DCR) support with getwork over the stratum protocol (source) along with the needed support for yiimp (source), his fork of the yaamp multipool software. We have compiled a Windows binary from the test version with Decred support and getwork over the stratum and have tested it on yiimp.ccminer.org to see how well it is performing. The result was just as you would expect from any good mining pool with stratum support – no stale shares and properly working difficulty adjustment. This version also comes with the regular getwork support, so it will work with the regular Decred mining pools as well. You are welcomed to try mining Decred on the Yiimp pool with the test version of ccMiner 1.7.3 form tpruvot, the Windows binary linked is a 32-bit one, compiled with VS2013 and CUDA 6.5 and it should be compatible with older Compute Nvidia GPUs.
