New cpuminer-multi Fork With HMQ1725 Algorithm Support

cpuminer-hmq1725

A bit late with this one, but better late than never. We have compiled a 64-bit Windows binary of the new cpuminer-multi fork by ocminer (source) with support for the HMQ1725 algorithm used by Espers (ESP). We have made small source changes in order to use hmq1725 as algorithm name instead of quark in the original source and compiled generic binaries for AMD and Intel CPUs that seem to provide a bit higher hashrate than the Windows binary provided by ocminer. We have tried compiling with optimizations for specific CPU architectures, but since it did not produce noticeable performance increase we are sticking to the generic ones for AMD K8 or newer as well as Intel Core 2 or newer processors. Running some tests on an Intel 5820K CPU has resulted in about 135 KHS with ocminer’s binary and our Windows binaries are giving us about 150 KHS, so they should be around 10% faster, but you are welcome to try and report your results.

New Pools for Mining Ethereum (ETH) Now Available

donkeypool-ethereum-mining-pool

Ethereum (ETH) has been experiencing some serious price fluctuations dropping significantly below its maximum top from a while ago, but still the network is strong and the number of miners is increasing. The same goes for mining pools with some new pools for mining Ethereum becoming available, so there is now more options available for you and the new pools are running promotions to attract more miners. You can find some more details about two of the new pools along a list of other Ethereum mining pools that have been available for longer time. Now that the latest miner software for Ethereum is getting failover support setting a backup pool or more than one might be a good idea as well, though the big mining pools rarely have issues it cans till happen.

The first pool you might wan to check out is PooLTo.Be Ethereum Pool. Still not a large number of miners and a lot of hashrate, but it supports ETH Stratum proxy as well as regular getwork mining and there is still zero pool fee for some time. The minimum payout threshold is 0.2 Ether and payouts run every 2 hours and the pool has already found a couple of blocks.

The other more recent launch in the fork of a dedicated Ethereum mining pools that you might want to check out is DonkeyPool that is apparently a side project by the EtherScan.io block explorer. The pool apparently only supports getwork for the moment and it has found a few blocks already, though the number of miners and the hashrate is not that big yet. The pool will run without a mining fee until June 15th, 2016, then the fee will be 0.5%. The payouts are made once a day if a minimum 1 ETH balance is available.

Web-based Monitoring for Windows Ethereum Mining Rigs

ethereum-windows-monitoring-tool

There are many tools for Linux including some specialized Linux-based mining distributions for monitoring different GPU mining rigs, but when talking about Windows-based mining rigs things are usually very different. With Windows mining rigs most people either rely on Team Viewer or another method of remotely connecting to the computer and monitoring directly the console window of the miner the PC is currently running. So here comes something useful for Windows-based Ethereum mining rigs that can save you the trouble of using remote connections all the time just to check the status of a mining rig – the Ethereum Windows monitoring tool. It is actually a set of tools and scripts that make it possible to open just a single webpage and see the status of your Ethereum mining rig in a short and useful way along with the mining hardware status such as operating temperatures, load, clocks and fan speed. The monitoring tool is designed to work with the standard ethminer, but it might be adaptable to other miners as well, though that might not be an easy task for novice users. The tool is still currently in an early version and might not be completely free of bugs and might not be that user friendly for everyone, but it is an interesting thing to try if you are mining Ethereum on Windows GPU mining rigs.

New Hodlminer AES-NI Wolf0 Optimized Miner Windows Binaries

hodlminer-mining

We have compiled a new range of windows binaries of the hodlminer fork optimized by Wolf0 (source) with support for Intel AES New Instruction set (AES-NI). This is the faster CPU miner for mining HOdlcoin (HODL) than the standard release for processors without AES-NI support. Do note that the binaries below are available only for 64-bit Windows and will work only on compatible AMD or Intel processors with AES instruction support, for other processors you should stick with the standard hodlminer that is slower, but should work on much wider range of CPUs.

cpu-z-aes-check

If you are not sure if your CPU does have support for AES-NI and what it the architecture it is based on you can easily check with the help of the free tool CPU-Z. Intel’s CPUs with AES-NI support start from the first models based on the Westmere microarchitecture that was introduced in early 2010 while AMD’s processors that do come with AES support start with the AMD Bulldozer Family 15h introduced in late 2011. This means that if you have a CPU later than that it will most likely have support AES-NI, though there is a catch, not all lower-end CPUs come with Advanced Encryption Standard Instruction Set supported. Intel has a list of all CPU’s that have support for AES-NI available here, so you can also use that to see if your CPU is in the list.

In the archive below with the different binaries there are number of executable files that have the type of michroarchitecture they are compiled for, so you just need to rename them to hodlminer.exe and try to run them depending on the type of CPU you have. The binaries with bdver1, bdver2 and bdver3 are for AMD CPUs with Bulldozer or later michroarchitecture while the others are for Intel starting with Westmere, then Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge and then Haswell and Broadwell. The Silvermont michroarchitecture is for specific set of low-power Atom, Celeron and Pentium branded processors used in systems on a chip (SoCs) made by Intel that aslo have support for AES-NI. If these binaries do no work on your processor, the standard hodlminer release should still be able to provide you with the ability to mine HOdlcoin (HODL).

To download and try the optimized hodlminer-wolf AES-Ni CPU miner for Windows…

Using the Coin Control Feature of Your GUI Qt Wallet

coin-control-feature

Taking advantage of the Coin Control feature is something considered a bit more advanced, especially if you don’t have built-in support in the specific crypto currency’s GUI Qt wallet and have to use the console. But Bitcoin and many of the more recent altcoins or ones with updated wallets do have built-in support making things easy to use the coin control feature right from the GUI. By default the feature is not enabled, so you will have to go to Settings / Options / Display and enable the coin control feature to be displayed. After that when you go to the Send coins panel of your coin wallet you will see a button to call the Coin Control feature, but what is this feature and why do you need to use it in the first place?

coin-control-feature2

The coin control feature allows you to control how you spend the coins in your wallet when sending a transaction. You can choose what addresses will be the ones sending the coins and which of the coins you have received will be used. With this feature you can do things like combine multiple transactions and the coins from them that you have received in a single large sum of coins available to one of you wallet addresses. To do that you can just select which coins and the address you want them sent to and use on of your own wallet addresses, so you will actually be sending yourself the coins. Sending yourself coins would require you to pay a network transaction fee, but by consolidating multiple small amounts of coins into single ones you can actually reduce on further transaction costs.

coin-control-feature3

The coin control feature however is more important for PoS (Proof of Stake) coins and altcoins that do have some other forms of awarding users with extra coins for holding some amount in their wallets. Consolidating the coins in your wallet will mean that they will available for stating altogether giving you bigger weight on the staking, so you should be able to save on time when staking coins. If a coin is rewarding you for keeping your coins in the wallet for some time, but there is a maximum time they need to stay in the wallet without moving you can use the coin control feature to see when you need to resend some of the coins back to your own wallet in order to keep getting rewards. So depending on the specific coin taking advantage of the coin control feature might help you maximize your PoS earnings, get more rewards or execute transactions with the coins you want from the address you want them to be sent. If you still haven’t used that feature you might want to give it a try and see how easy it is to use it especially if it is already available in your GUI qt wallet and you just need to enable it and not having to run console commands.

Check Profitability with the HOdlcoin (HODL) Mining Calculator

hodl-mining-calculator

There is now a mining calculator available for HOdlcoin (HODL) our current favorite for a CPU-only mineable crypto coin. The calculator makes it easy to get a good idea on how much you might be able to earn using your CPU for mining the coin. The calculator gives you only information about what you can mine, but your profit can increase significantly thanks to the interest you get and if you deposit the coins for a term, taking advantage of the still quite high interest rate. Another interesting new feature with HODL is the recent introduction of a custom HOdlcoin block explorer that gives interesting and useful information on how things are moving with the coin and its network, so do check that out as well.

Updated Claymore Dual Ethereum and Decred Miner for AMD GPUs

claymore-dual-ethereum-decred-miner-3-1

Claymore has been quite active in further developing his dual miner for AMD OpenCL GPUs intended to mine both Ethereum (ETH) and Decred (DCR) since our initial post about his first release a few days ago. The latest updates include some of the features we noted as missing in the initial release such as Stratum support for Decred or the ability to set workers for Ethereum mining pools. The more interesting improvements however are those relates to the performance you get from the miner, he has been able to squeeze some extra performance in terms of the hashrate you get for mining Ethereum while at the same time you still get decent performance for mining Decred as well.

The earlier versions showed a bit of a decrease of the performance in Ethereum while using the dual mining mode, but the latest improvements have significantly improved the situation, including the results for slower AMD GPUs. With the latest version 3+ you can get slightly more Ethereum mining hashrate than with the regular ethminer while at the same time you are also mining some Decred. The higher-end the AMD GPU you are using, the higher performance gain you can expect – from about 1 MHS on 79×0/280x cards to a few on 290/390 series of cards plus the extra Decred mining hashrate. Interestingly enough not mining in dual mode, but only Ethereum is not showing difference in the hashrate now on a Radeon R9 280X for example.

So if you still have not tried the Claymore Dual Ethereum and Decred Miner for AMD GPUs (it does not work on Nvidia video cards), you should give it a try. Do note that although this miner is free-to-use, there is a small developer fee of 1% for Ethereum-only mining mode and 2% for Ethereum plus Decred mining mode, do every hour the miner mines Ethereum for 36 or 72 seconds for developer. Also, if you have been mining only Ethereum for the moment and you switch do dual mining mode adding Decred you should know that the power usage and the heat generated by the GPU will increase. So make sure your AMD GPU mining rig can handle the extra power usage and heat generated when dual mining, because Ethereum is less power hungry and more memory than GPU demanding algorithm while the situation with Decred is the right opposite and thus both can be mined together with pretty good results. Another important thing to note is that the miner is only released as a Windows binary, no source code or binaries for other operating systems are currently available.

Visit the official miner announcement thread for additional details and downloads…

What We don’t Like About the iBeLink DM384M X11 ASIC Miner

ibelink-dm384m-2

THe first X11 ASIC miner on the market was iBeLink DM384M that was released about a month and a half ago in a limited 50 units first batch and we were lucky enough to purchase one of the first units available from Dual Miner. We have since tested and played quite a lot with the device and we have since shared a lot of things we like about the device and some that we don’t. With DualMiner.com opening pre-orders for the next batch it is time to share a few more things that we do not like about the iBeLink DM384M, so that people that might be considering to order the device be well aware what to expect from it. The next batch that is up from pre-order is expected to start shipping by the end of next month, so a lot can happen before the devices start shipping including a competing product becoming available for order without so much waiting time.

ibelink-config-screen-software

But lets get back to the iBeLink DM384M X11 ASIC miner and what we don’t like and should have happened in the timeframe of about a month and a half since the first batch of devices started shipping. On the software side, still no source code of the cgminer is available for users to modify and integrate in sgminer, bfgminer or another software miner or even compile for Windows or other operating systems. The fork of cgminer available is only in a binary form for Raspberry Pi and even the binary is not usable for custom setups as it apparently has built in protections that don’t allow you to use it in other environment than the one you get it preinstalled on (the RPi shipped with the miner). You can get inside the Linux shell on the Raspberry Pi controller of the miner and try to add another root account or change the password for an existing user, but you will not get very far. Thanks to the built-in protections in the cgminer it will refuse to run if any modifications in the environment such as changed passwords or new users are detected and so far iBelink has not released the password for the device so you cannot ssh to it using an existing user. So the only thing left is apparently for somebody to brute force the password of the device as iBeLink simply does not give us another option.

Still on the software side, there has not been a single update to the web-based interface that is available for the user to control and monitor the device and that software does need some fixing and new features. The numbers you get reported are a bit weird and confusing, so you might have trouble getting a good idea on the status of the hardware other than if it works and how well it works – you will have to monitor poolside for the real performance. But that is not the big issue, there are features that are simply needed and not available and apparently will not be introduced such as password protection for the web interface or load balancing pool strategy to help you spread the high hashrate among lower difficulty coins for example. This might not have been that bad if if users had the access to the divide that would allow them to modify the software themselves and add features that they may need, unfortunately iBeLink locked this option out. We have already seem modified and improved firmware for various ASIC miners made by users that add missing features or improve the performance and reliability of the hardware, but for the moment we are not going to be seeing this happening for the iBeLink DM384M X11 ASIC.

ibelink-dm384m-power-connectors

Enough with the software, let us get started about the hardware and what to expect on that side from the iBeLink DM384M X11 ASIC. Solid build, adequate performance as per the official specifications, but noisy and at a level that simply makes it not suitable for use by home miners. Server grade chassis, cooling fans and even power supply ensure long term reliability unless you put it in a very hot environment where you might have trouble with any other hardware anyway. If you are considering to modify the miner to make it quieter and usable for home miners that do not want the excessive noise from the cooling solution, then you will have some more trouble. Half of the noise of the device is coming from the power supply and you will be having trouble replacing it with a standard ATX PSU that is much more silent. The reason for that is the non-standard power connectors used by the blades with the chips that the power supply uses, a 12-pin power connector that may be found on some other server products, but not with the same pinout. Apart from the 12V yellow cables and the black ground cables you have a single 3.3V orange cable on every connector, so you would need to do some modifications to the regular power supply to make it compatible. Or you can just desolder the cooling fan of the standard power supply and add in quieter fans to keep it cool, but that would limit you with the length of the power cables as they are designed to be long enough for the standard chassis of the device. Adding enough less noisy, but still powerful enough fans to each of the blades can provide enough cooling and much less noise when compared to the standard cooling setup, but you will need to take the blades out of the standard chassis.

So be prepared and know what to expect from the iBeLink DM384M X11 ASIC miner should you consider ordering one or more units. One more last thing before making the final decision, the X11 profitability at the moment is not what it was when the first batch was shipped and there is a chance that it may go even lower once more hardware is available. Unlike the last time when new ASICs were introduced for Litecoin and Scrypt-based crypto currencies, X11 is not that widespread and there are not a lot of strong coins apart from DASH, not even that many X11 altcoins like it was with Scrypt ones. With a limited number of X11 ASIC miners, all big and powerful units, and with GPU miners moving from X11 to other algorithms a centralization of X11 hashrate may as well become a serious problem that can drive away users. But enough with the pessimism, time to get optimistic, as we are probably soon going to be seeing more X11 competition on the market including smaller single chip USB miners to help decentralize things and get X11 ASIC hardware in the hands of many more people.

Modifying KNC Titan Scrypt ASIC With Water Cooling

knc-titan-water-cooling-1

After our not so successful experiments in trying to use immersion cooling with mineral oil for the KnCMiner Titan Scrypt ASIC we have moved to trying out different things to make the device run cooler and silent. The obvious next step would be to use water cooling and the options for this are many, so we have decided to start by trying with a pre-filled closed loop All-In-One solution that is ready to be installed just to test out things. We were pleasantly surprised that KNC has decided to use standard mounting holes for 115x Intel sockets on the PCB of the device, so the installation for a water cooling solution designed to support these sockets should not be a problem. The water cooler should be capable of dissipating about 300 Watts of power coming from the Titan ASIC chip (actually four chips in a single package). We have opted out to start with a Silverstone Tundra TD02-SLIM AIO water cooler – dual 120mm slim radiator with two silent slim fans and the results we got with it cooling the ASIC were very good. Using a larger radiator and slightly more powerful fans can help you get even better results temperature wise and still have silent operation, even thicker single 120/140mm radiators could be able to handle things well enough.

knc-titan-water-cooling-2

Whatever water cooling solution you go for you need to make sure that the top of the water cooling block is clear, so hat you can place a cooling fan on top of it. The actual problem with the Titan Scrypt ASICs is not the main chip(s), but the DCDC power modules that provide the ASIC with the needed power. The design that KNC has chosen makes it hard to cool them properly and their solution that uses very thick thermal pads is not great either. So if going for water cooling installing the water block is the easy part, keeping the power modules cool is the hard one. In fact you can cool them by just placing a powerful 120/140mm fan on top of the whole thing to blow cold air directly over them…

knc-titan-water-cooling-3

Our test with a 140mm Noctua NF-A14 iPPC-3000 PWM fan for cooling the DCDC power modules proved a success in keeping acceptable temperatures, but not in keeping the device silent. The idea to use water cooling instead of the standard water cooling is to make it run cooler and more silent. So the solution would be to do a custom set of heatsinks to fit on the DCDC power modules and have a silent fan blowing on top of them in order to make the cooling efficient and silent enough. Reusing the stock air cooling plate wit the thick thermal pads that the miner comes with will not do well, but it can give you some ideas, just make sure you use thin thermal pads or a thin layer of thermal grease. The end result will be totally worth it in making the KNC Titan run silent and effective especially for home miners with the summer heat not too far away.
