ASUS GeForce GTX 960 STRIX OC Hashrate and Power Usage

asus-strix-gtx-960-dc2oc

We have gotten an ASUS GeForce GTX 960 STRIX to test GPU mining with it and also checked the power usage with the various algorithms supported by the latest ccMiner fork from SP that is optimized for Nvidia Maxwell GPUs. The ASUS STRIX is one of the GTX 960 video cards out there with the highest factory overclock, so it is supposed to provide higher performance as compared to the more reference Palit GTX 960 OC card that we have tested recently. Do note that the Nvidia rated TDP of the GTX 960 GPUs is 120 Watts and it seems that the reference cards that are not factory overclocked are more like in the 100W of power usage and the higher clocked models such as the ASUS STRIX GTX 960 do manage to go up to the 120 Watts power consumption mark.

geforce-gtx-960-power-usage

We have used the ccMiner 1.5.31-git Fork by SP for Maxwell, the same version that we used a few days ago, so that we can compare performance with the GTX 750 Ti and the GTX 960 OC card from Palit to the results that the ASUS STRIX card offers. There is a newer version of the ccMiner fork from SP already available that fixes the NIST5 support, though there is not much difference in the performance in the Lyra2 algorithm on the GTX 960 as compared to GTX 750 Ti. Also the Blake, Blakecoin and Penta algorithms that rely a lot on the CPU and do not use much of GPU resources do not seem to provide much better results on the more overclocked ASUS cards. Other than that the ASUS STRIX card does provide some extra hashrate over the Palit GTX 960 and thanks to the higher clocks factory preset for the ASUS its performance gets closer to 2x the hashrate provided from a reference GTX 750 Ti GPU that is not factory overclocked.

ASIC Manufacturer CoinTerra Files for Bankruptcy

cointerra-bankruptcy

The Bitcoin ASIC manufacturer CoinTerra has filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy protection in the United States Bankruptcy Court, meaning it is very likely that all of the company’s assets will be liquidated in order to repay the estimated between 200 and 999 creditors. The CoinTerra website is not available anymore and it has been replaced with just a single image confirming the information for their bankruptcy filing. The Cointerra bankruptcy protection form has apparently been filed on January 24th with estimated assets between 10 and 50 million USD and similar estimate on liabilities. The reason for this outcome most likely lies in the too optimistic plans of the company that apparently did not involve a situation where the Bitcoin exchange could get back down to $200 USD. A few months ago the company was still making plans for next generation of ASIC miners based on 16nm process and getting ready for the future. Some month prior to that they have tried to get into the large scale cloud hosting operations, however their plans for that probably did not get that well either. This should come as a warning to other crypto currency focused companies to make their business plans more carefully in order to avoid following the same path as CoinTerra.

Coinbase Launches First Regulated Bitcoin Exchange in the US

coinbase-exchange

It seems that Coinbase no longer wants to remain only as a payment processor as the company has just launched Coinbase Exchange, the first regulated Bitcoin exchange based in the US. If you are a Coinbase user in one of the 24 supported states or territories in USA you can begin trading immediately on Coinbase Exchange. There will be no trading fees through March 30th, after which there will be a maker-taker model – orders which provide liquidity are charged different fees from orders taking liquidity. This interesting development comes soon after the last very serious funding round that Coinbase recently had.

The fact that the exchange is a regulated one in USA should bring the trust of users that can actually use the Coinbase Exchange, but on the other hand it also means that you will have to cope up with all of the side effects that the requirements of regulation have. The good thing is that this new exchange should theoretically bring more stability and trust in the crypto currency ecosystem, but the not so good one is that it will come at the cost of privacy – one of the key advantages that crypto currencies are supposed to offer. Still it could be a good way to bring more investors in the crypto currency that would normally not be ready to trust other more questionable exchanges with their financial investments.

Bitcoin and Litecoin Exchange Rate Going Up

btc-ltc-bitcoinwisdom-prices

After a pretty long period of keeping low prices Bitcoin and Litecoin may have started to finally recover to a higher levels, currently the BTC exchange rate is back to over $300 USD and LTC is above $2 USD. Definitely good news for people with small mining operations or using cloud mining services that were worried about their investments that were at risk with the possibility of contracts getting terminated. A quick look at CEX.IO however shows that cloud mining there is still unprofitable even at the current prices with the automatic settings to turn on cloud mining when it is again profitable. At the same time however we are still seeing a trend for the network difficulty of Bitcoin to go down and for Litecoin to keep at pretty much the same level after getting down significantly lately. With the current prices we are expecting to see some mining operations getting back online after being stopped due to the low exchange rate, especially mining operations that are working on the mine and sell immediately model. We’ll have to wait and see how things will go from here on…

Miner Control 1.6.1 Pack for Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti

minercontrol-1-6-1-gtx-750-ti

We have not updated our Miner Control based package for GTX 750 Ti GPUs for a while, so we have decided it is time to update it with the latest development – version 1.6.1 with an up to date ccMiner fork 1.5.31-git windows binary from SP (compiled for Maxwell cards with Compute 5.0 and 5.2 only). The GTX 750 Ti package is configured to work with NiceHash, WestHash and Yaamp pools, supporting the more profitable X11, X13, X14, X15, Keccack, Lyra2RE and Quark algorithms. We have temporary removed support for NIST5 as it appears to have some issues with the latest releases of ccMiner from SP. It seems that at the moment mining Quark is profitable on Nvidia GPUs as compared to other popular algorithms.

You can download the package below with settings already set for non-overclocked GTX 750 Ti, if you are going to be using it on multiple card mining rigs you need to multiply the hashrate for the algorithms supported. The package will also function just fine on GTX 960, GTX 970 and GTX 980 cards where you would need to set the power usage and hashrate numbers for your respective hardware to get the correct calculations working. To be ready to use it you just need to update the account settings for each pool to reflect your BTC payment address. Do note that the default configuration that we have left is set to mine from time to time for the author of the software (Miner Control) as a donation alternative, but you can change that setting should you wish to.

The New Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 Mining Performance

palit-geforce-gtx-960-oc

Today Nvidia has introduced a new mid-range GPU based on their latest Maxwell architecture – the GeForce GTX 960. Specifications wise the new GTX 960 is kind of half the parameters of the GTX 980 at about half the price, but it is actually more interesting as an alternative to GTX 750 Ti in our opinion. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 GPUs should provide roughly 1.5x to 2x the performance of a GTX 750 Ti being slightly more expensive and with 120W TDP according to the official specifications. We have managed to get our hands on one GeForce GTX 960 from Palit, their reference-like design though it is still slightly overclocked version, but the lowest and cheapest version that they currently offer and have decided to compare it to the performance of a reference GTX 750 Ti card with no factory overclocking to see the difference in performance.

gtx-960-crypto-hashrate

We have used the latest ccMiner 1.5.31-git Fork by SP for Maxwell to test on both GPUs and you can see the results in the table above. As expected the performance result from the GTX 960 we are seeing are in the range 1.5x-2x the ones that GTX 750 Ti provides. With a more serious factory overclocked GTX 960 results more to the 2x can be observed as compared to a reference non overclocked GTX 750 Ti GPU. There were however a few weird things that we have noticed and also the reason why there are no results from all of the supported algorithms listed in the table. Lyra2 for example performs worse on GTX 960 than on GTX 750 Ti, it probably needs some optimizations to show the maximum potential that the GTX 960 can offer. NIST5 seems to be broken in the latest ccMiner fork as it did not properly work on any of the Maxwell cards, the Blake, Blakecoin and Penta algorithms provided too weird results and very significant difference between the two cards. So we have decided not to include them until further investigation on why the results are so strange and different for the two GPUs. Anyway, it seems that the GTX 960 could be an alternative solution for GPU mining instead of the GTX 750 Ti for mining rigs that use multiple video cards. That is if you consider investing in GPU mining rigs for mining crypto coins with the idea not to mine for profit at the moment, but to keep the mined coins expecting better times to trade them as currently GPU mining is not very profitable with the low exchange rates at the moment.

It seems that the problem this time is caused by hardware failure, unlike the last time back in November last year when the forum was apparently DDoS attacked. Checking the official twitter account for updates reveals information that apparently the problem was caused by hard drive failure and there could be some extended downtime before things are back online. Also there is information that some of the posts made in the last few hours before the website went down might be lost. Hopefully things with BitcoinTalk will be back to normal later today and the forum will resume operation again…

Transfer Scrypt to SHA256 Hashrate at Genesis Mining

genesis-mining-transfer-hashrate

The cloud mining service Genesis Mining has announced an interesting options to its users that have purchased Scrypt cloud mining hashrate – an option to transfer the Scrypt hashrate into SHA256D hashrate. With the current low Litecoin exchange rate and the high network difficulty a lot of services offering Scrypt cloud mining are close to being unprofitable resulting the in the cancellation of these contracts. While the Scrypt cloud mining hashrate at Genesis Mining is still bringing some prfoit, though not much, the service has decided to offer users the ability to convert their Scrypt hashrate to SHA256D hashrate at 1:1 rate. So you can turn 1 MHS into 1 GHS, something that may not seem like a very good offer considering how much you had to pay for for 1 MHS as compared to 1 GHS, but with the current low profitability for Litecoin on the longer term it might not be so bad with the chances that soon your Scrypt mining contract might be terminated if it becomes unprofitable and this trend lasts for 20 consecutive days.

There is a bit of catch though, you have only 3 days from now to make your decision if you want to make the switch from Scrypt to SHA256D cloud mining hashrate at a rate of 1 MHS for 1 GHS. After that this offer will most likely not be available and it is up to you to decide if you should take it or not as there is still a chance that Litecoin may recover and become viable to mine it again. The only thing you need to do is login to your account and click on the Transfer Hashpower button in your contro panel. A word of warning though, clicking on the button will immediately transfer the Scrypt to SHA256D hashrate, there will be no confirmation required and you will not be able to reverse your decision. So make sure you carefully decide if you should take up on that offer or not.

The Bitcoin payment processor Coinbase has announced that they have raised $75 million USD in Series C financing, the largest funding round to date for a Bitcoin company, bringing their total capital raised to $106 million US dollars. What is even more interesting however is the companies that have invested in Coinbase this time and not only the serious investment being made. Apart from some of the existing investors the new investors include USAA, BBVA, The New York Stock Exchange, and NTT DoCoMo – Japan’s largest mobile telecommunications operator. There are also personal investments from former Citigroup CEO Vikram Pandit and former Thomson Reuters CEO Tom Glocer. It is interesting to see that financial institutions and other large companies are starting to show serious interest in Bitcoin, making major investments is companies dealing with crypto currencies. Great news not only for Coinbase, but also something good for BTC since the start for 2015, something that was really needed after the not so great beginning of the year for crypto currencies.

Time for a new windows binary compiled from the latest code of the ccMiner 1.5.31-git SP-MOD fork of the Nvidia GPU miner optimized for Maxwell GPUs by SP (source). This version includes fixes as well as some performance improvements in various algorithms since the last binary we have compiled a few days ago. The latest version also gets ccMiner ready for the upcoming Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 GPU that is expected to be available very soon. Other than that this version from SP is designed for running on Nvidia Maxwell GPUs such as the already available GTX 750 and 750 Ti as well as the newer GTX 970 and 980. The windows binary release we have made available here is compiled with support for Compute 5.0 and Compute 5.2 GPUs or with other words only for Maxwell-based cards with CUDA 6.5 and VS2013.

We have compiled a windows binary form the latest source code available in the master branch and you can download it from the link below. If you were using an older binary compiled from a development source then you might want to update it to this one that is based on the latest stable source. Don’t expect to get some serious performance increases from this version, unless of course you are still using a very old development release. If you are using an older release of the dev version of sgminer for mining FeatherCoin (FTC) or another NeoScrypt-based crypto coin you might want to make sure you have the latest version and update.

BitMain AntMiner U3 Available Again, Comes With New Design

bitmain-antminer-u3-new-design

BitMain has started selling the AntMiner U3 Bitcoin ASIC miner again with a slightly different design than the original first batch, other than that the specifications remain pretty much the same (with some minor differences in cited power usage). The new AntMiner U3 Batch 2 is available with a minimum order quantity of 20 units at a price of 38 USD (0.185 BTC) and the Batch 3 is with a minimum order quantity of just 5 units available at a price of 39 USD (0.19 BTC). The BitMain AntMiner U3 ASIC miners provide 63 GHS at about 60W with 1 Watt per GHS in the new specifications that are published by BitMain with a low noise level.

BitMain AntMiner U3 Specifications:

– Max Hash Rate: 63 GH/s ±5%

– Power Efficiency: 1Watt/GH/s on wall at 0.83V

– Voltage: DC 12V input, 6A

– Chip Quantity per unit: 4

– One 80mm fan

– Noise: ~25 DB at 25 °C ambient temperature

– Hashrate and VDD core voltage can be adjusted via cgminer command line

– USB connection

– 12V AC/DC power brick of 6A, but power line not included

– Certificate Compliance: FCC/CE

BitMain has these miners available for home users that want to have access to affordable priced and silent Bitcoin ASIC miners that want to play with them just for hobby, they are not designed to ROI due to their lower hashrate and not so great power efficiency. Since they are running batch 2 and 3 this means that there is interest in these little devices from users, though you probably would want to get a single unit to play with it and not buy a minimum of 5 or 20 units. This means that most end users will probably not be interested in directly buying AntMiner U3 from BitMain, but will look for some company reselling these at a single piece quantities.

ZeusHash May Stop Offering Cloud Mining Services

zeushash-bitcoin-cloud-mining-warning

Earlier this month Zeushash has stopped all Scrypt cloud mining contracts due to the maintenance fees exceeding the mined coins for a long period of time. Today the service has warned its user that the same can happen with their Bitcoin cloud mining contracts as well. This is a direct result from the low Bitcoin price that was observed lately along with the relatively high maintenance fees of the service. As per the contract terms the Bitcoin cloud mining contracts can be stopped if the fees are higher than the profit for a period of 10 days. If this happens, though not seeming that likely today as the Bitcoin price has been recovering a bit, it would essentially mean that the ZeusHash platform will not be offering anything to the tens of thousand customers it claims to have. ZeusHash still sells GHS cloud mining hashrate, though they are warning users not to purchase any hashrate for the moment. If they stop offering Bitcoin cloud mining after they stopped with Scrypt, then this would essentially mean that the service will have nothing to offer to its customers.

At the moment it seems that other cloud mining services may start having trouble with the profitability, so they either need to optimize their operations or there is a chance they may get out of business. Most of the cloud mining services offering “Lifetime” cloud mining contracts do come with a term that if the maintenance fees exceed the profit made from the mined coins these contracts can be terminated. So as a result the user interest in cloud mining services has decreased quite a bit lately, the same goes for the purchase of ASIC mining hardware and even building GPU mining farms. There is however a chance that this not so favorable situation at the moment may actually end up helping the whole crypto currency ecosystem by helping normalize things after the very rapid growth that we have observed in the past year… we’ll have to wait and see.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 Coming Soon to Replace GTX 750 Ti

nvidia-geforce-gtx-960-reference-design

There are already a lot of rumors over the internet, including some leaked photos, specs and gaming performance results of a new Maxwell-based GPU coming from Nvidia next week – the GTX 960. The final specifications of the GTX 960 are not officially announced, but according to the information available the card will come with 1024 CUDA cores, 64 TMUs, 32 ROPs, 128-bit memory bus or essentially half of the specs of the GTX 980. The expected power usage is around 120W or around double that of the GTX 750 Ti with an expected end-user price of about $199 USD ($149 for the 2GB GTX 750 Ti). So with just $50 USD more you could be able to get a new Maxwell-based GPU that could as well provide twice the crypto mining performance of a GTX 750 Ti GPU and if this is indeed true when we see the final card and the actual performance it offers it will be quite an interesting alternative to GTX 750 Ti for mining rigs. That of course is still in the form of speculations as we don’t have officials announced product and specifications, but our expectations based on the leaked data so far suggest that about twice the performance of GTX 750 Ti is possible. We are going to be keeping an eye out for the announcement of the new GTX 960 graphic processors from Nvidia expected next week and are going to be trying out a card as soon as we manage to get our hands on one of these to see what kind of performance will it offer for crypto mining. So stay tuned for more information when it becomes available.

Bitcoin Going Up or Down, Nobody Knows for Sure

bitcoin-going-up-or-down

Today the Bitcoin exchange rate briefly dropped down to about $150 USD on Bitstamp, though shortly after that it rose back to over $200 USD. This was enough to scare some people to panic sell as usual and has sprouted new theories about the cryto currency failing or dropping down to sub $100 USD and so on. The fact is that lately the Bitcoin exchange rate was actively swinging with big jumps up or down and nobody knows for sure what is going to happen. This could be a result of the recently hacked Bitstamp exchange and almost 19000 BTC stolen that are being dumped on exchanges, or ponzi schemes that have stolen Bitcoins from users dumping them, or a result of big mining ASIC manufacturers (Cointerra) and cloud mining services such as CEX.IO stopping their mining operations. It could as well be none of the above or all of the above, but the majority of people that believe in Bitcoin and crypto currencies are not ready to give up on the idea. A lot of businesses however that are focused on mining for crypto currencies may suffer from the not so good exchange rate lately and we already are seeing very big companies in that area starting to get affected…

Updated Windows Binary of the ccMiner 1.5.29-git Fork by SP for Maxwell

ccminer-1-5-29-git-sp-mod

Time for a new windows binary compiled from the latest code of the ccMiner 1.5.29-git SP-MOD fork of the Nvidia GPU miner optimized for Maxwell GPUs by SP (source) as apparently SP has been quite active lately. This version includes some fixes as well as quite a few performance improvements in various algorithms in the latest code since the last binary we have compiled a few days ago, so you might want to update to get a faster mining performance. The version from SP is designed for running on Nvidia Maxwell GPUs such as GTX 750 and 750 Ti as well as the newer GTX 970 and 980 and it also includes some additional performance optimizations. The windows binary release we have made available here is compiled with support for Compute 5.0 and Compute 5.2 GPUs or with other words only for Maxwell-based cards with CUDA 6.5 and VS2013.

CEX.IO Temporarily Suspends Cloud Mining Services

cex-io-homepage

CEX.IO has just announced that they are temporarily suspending their Bitcoin cloud mining services at the time of the next difficulty increase. We can’t say we are surprised by that news coming from CEX.IO as the company already had quite high maintenance fees, apparently due to the use of older mining hardware that is not so power efficient anymore. We just did not expect to see one of the largest cloud mining service provider to temporary stop their cloud services due to mining not being profitable anymore, so the platform will continue to operate as a crypto currency exchange. Below is a quote of the official information that they have published on their blog:

Taking into consideration our users’ interests, the recent Bitcoin price drop, as well as the upscaling of the mining difficulty, CEX.IO Bitcoin Exchange would like to announce a temporary suspension of cloud mining services provided by the platform at the time of the next difficulty increase.

According to the 11.5. paragraph of CEX.IO Terms of Use:

“Mining with using User’s Gigahashes can be stopped by CEX.IO if the amount of the Maintenance Cost exceeds rewards for each mined block or if the mining is economically inexpedient.”

Thereby, all GHS formerly purchased by CEX.IO users remain their absolute property, with appropriate figures reflected in users’ profile balance. Additionally users will be able to manually enable mining with Gigahashes by their own choice.

“Suspension of CEX.IO cloud mining service is only a forced temporary measure, the result of cloud mining costs exceeding mining profit,” Jeffrey Smith, Chief Information Officer of CEX.IO. “Currently all cloud mining/maintenance costs are directed to the Hardware provider, hence, we are open for negotiations with additional mining hardware providers, who can offer favourable terms. And, as soon as we get an opportunity to upgrade mining hardware, or come to more efficient terms with energy suppliers, cloud mining process will be automatically resumed.”

Meanwhile, CEX.IO will continue operating as full service exchange platform for trading cryptocurrencies and fiat money.

Reforming Tor Funding With Cryptocoins

The Torgate controversy has sputtered along these last few months, running a distant second to the profoundly annoying GamerGate. The only legitimate complaint anyone seems to have about the Tor development team is the fact that their funding is largely government based, and given that Tor is open source and decentralized it meets the NSA’s […]

AMHash Withdraws from Hashie Transfers Now Available

amhash-withdraws-now-available

AMHash has added the ability to withdraw the dividends that you get for cloud mining hashrate that you have purchased from the service or have moved hashrate purchased at Hashie. The withdraw functionality is apparently confirmed manually before the request gets approved and currently there is up to 48 “working hours” time for approval or with other words it can take quite some time. The minimum you need to have in your balance to request a withdraw to your wallet address is 0.005 BTC and there is nothing mentioned about a fee. We have verified that currently smaller withdraw requests seem to be sent without a fee – the 0.0439 BTC that we have accumulated for the time that our hashrate has been moved to AMHash. With this the AMHash service now can pretty much sell their cloud mining hashrate directly and users will be able to use the service’s web-based control panel and not have to rely on other companies to provide such functionality such as the failed Hashie. However there is not information on new cloud mining hashrate being available from the service soon for purchase and with the current market situation and low Bitcoin price it may take some time before the investment in new mining hardware becomes viable.
