Bitcoin Price Errant, Comes Back Home

Bitcoin price declined to the vicinity of its 1-hour 200MA, today, without making a direct challenge on it. Price revisits the 200MA periodically but, during September, has crisscrossed it several times. Combined with the choppy wave patterns evident in the chart we conclude that price is in a corrective phase and prefer to stay out of the market. How Disruptive Will the Block Chain Really Be For Financial Institutions?

Why are so many financial institutions investing in block chain innovation labs? Will the block chain, with its promise of rapid, secure and inexpensive transactions, really make many existing financial institutions obsolete as some have claimed? Thomas F. Dapp and Alexander Karollus examined the block chain’s impact on traditional financial institutions in a "talking point" article for Deutsche Bank Research, which provides macroeconomic analysis for Deutsche Bank Group. The article is titled, “Blockchain – attack is probably the best form of defence.” The authors noted that the block chain, because it constitutes a decentralized ledger system which can manage transactions […]

The Size of the Bitcoin Blockchain Data Files Has Reached 50GB

bitcoin-blockchain-data

Earlier this year we have reported when the Bitcoin Blockchain data files have passed the 40GB mark and now, just about three and a half months later, the data files have reached a total size of 50GB. This all comes as a result of the increased number of transactions and the wider usage and adoption of Bitcoin, but as the size of the Blockchain data continues to grow it also becomes harder for users to run a full local wallet. An alternative is to go for a lighter version of a Bitcoin wallet that does not need all of the Blockchain data stored locally. You can also go for a service offering online Bitcoin wallets a more attractive choice as they will save you the trouble of taking up quite a lot of space on your hard drive and the slow update times if you do not run the wallet often enough to keep it synchronized. Not to mention that if you are using the default data directory on your C drive you might be having trouble finding enough free space, especially if you use a smaller SSD for a system drive. The solution for this would be to move the Blockchain data files to another drive and run the Bitcoin Core client with the datadir parameter pointing it to the drive and folder you have moved the data files in like for example a second hard drive.

ERNIT – The Smart Piggy Bank with BTC Support

ernit-smart-piggy-bank

ERNIT is the digital piggy bank of the future, designed to help you teach your children how to manage and save money in a world of digital currencies. Inspired by traditional piggy banks, ERNIT was created to help parents teach their kids about value while putting a smile on their faces. ERNIT consists of an app and a smart piggy bank. The app enables you and your kids to set savings goals, and allows you and others to contribute money from nearby or far away. The piggy bank provides a physical way for kids to connect with their savings. They can hear when money is added, and the light on their piggy’s snout lets them know how far along they are toward reaching their goal.

The ERNIT app should be easily connected with the payment of your choosing – it can be anything from a credit card, a bank transfer or a Bitcoin wallet. Once the connection has been made, you can begin transferring money to your child’s piggy bank and cashing out should be done just as easily as putting money into the system including the use of Bitcoins of course. ERNIT is now on Kickstarter looking to get at least $80,000 USD pledged by users and already more than 100 people have backed the project. You can currently get an ERNIT for as low as $59 USD as a super early bird reward for backing the project, but you need to be quick as there are limited early bird units available and the regular retail price of the device will be $119 USD.

If you are interested you can get more details about the project on Kickstarter…

Bitcoin Basketball Android Game With Bitcoin Rewards

The Android mobile game developer Bitplay.Today has released a new free competitive multiplayer game that awards players with Bitcoins, the new game is called Bitcoin Basketball. The goal of the game is to make as much points as possible for a given time period and with a limited number of basketball balls and since you are competing with other real people based on your points ranking the first three places out of four get Bitcoin rewards. Bitcoin Basketball is very easy to play – simply drag your finger and aim your shot, release and score points, but keep in mind there is wind that makes it a bit more challenging to hit the shot. This is essentially the fourth game from that developer based on the similar concept of mini tournaments against other real people and with Bitcoin rewards. You will not get rich with BTC playing these games, but if you have some time to waste they can still be fun to play and you can get some satoshi while doing so. The previous similar game from the same developer was Bitcoin Hopper and prior to that there were also Bitcoin Crush and Bitcoin Flapper and you might want to check them out as well if you still haven’t.

ccminer-1-5-69-spmod

Another update in the form of a new Windows binary release compiled from the latest Git source code of the ccMiner 1.5.69-git SP-MOD fork by SP optimized for the latest Maxwell-based video cards (source). This release has numerous fixes, but the most important is apparently the one resolving the issues that the last few releases had with solo mining. With the latest release the miner does not seem to be crashing when it finds a block anymore when solo mining, so if you had trouble before you can try with the latest release, it works for us. Do note that the SP-MOD fork of ccMiner is designed for Nvidia Maxwell GPUs such as the already available GTX 750, 750 Ti as well as the newer GTX 960, GTX 970, GTX 980 and GTX 980 Ti and GTX Titan X. The Windows binary release we have made available here is with support for Compute 5.0 and Compute 5.2 GPUs or with other words only for Maxwell-based Nvidia video cards compiled with CUDA 6.5 and VS2013.

The company is excited about the product. “I’m very excited about it,” said Ben Horowitz, a co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz, told Wall Street Journal. “The thing that’s completely missing that I think would make the Internet better would be machine-to-machine payments. Coinbase Could Go the Tesla Route With Patents, CEO Confirms

Coinbase sparked controversy within the largely open-source dedicated Bitcoin industry after filing for nine patents this year. Some Bitcoiners suggested Coinbase had it in mind to create a monopoly over key Bitcoin services with the move. CEO Brian Armstrong assures this is not the case.  Bitcoin exchange and payment processor Coinbase filed nine patent applications with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The USPTO received the submission on March 17. The filings were published this month, and include applications for products like hot bitcoin wallets, an instant exchange, a Bitcoin exchange, a Bitcoin tipping button and two different block chain transaction […]

Rigs Online, a New Service for Dagger Hashimoto Mining Rigs

rigs-online

You can say it was about time to see a service for leasing and renting mining rigs for Ethereum and other forks that use the Dagger Hashimoto mining algorithm, so here comes the new service called Rigs Online. Interestingly enough the larger and more established services did not bother to add support for Ethereum hashrate leasing and renting, so somebody else apparently had to do it. The service is still in beta and has a bit limited functionality initially, but it does already work and works pretty good based on our first experiences with it, though there are some issues as well that need to be worked on. Everyone can register and either rent an available mining rig if the price is acceptable or add his own mining rig to sell the extra hashrate he has available. The service accepts Bitcoins only for the payments and when you send coins to your account you will get them available for use just after 1 confirmation, however for the moment there still seems to be no function available to withdraw any earnings or coins left in your balance.

rigs-online-lease-a-rig

When you want to rent a mining rig you choose it from the list of available ones that are not yet rented fill in some details on where you want to have it mine. So far it seems that only Suprnova is supported and you can choose to mine in their ETH, SHF or EXP pools then you need to set a worker you have already set in the respective pool, and the time you want to rent the rig for – can be for less than 24 hours, though the prices are listed in 24 hours. It would probably have been better to just paste the full pool URL for mining than to have just a dropdown, but this is probably to make it possible to have less mistakes. Unfortunately for the moment there is no option to edit the settings once you rent a mining rig, so if you make a mistake in the setting up then you cannot fix it or if you want to switch the pool at some point. Another thing that is not yet very clear is what happens when a rig you have rented for a given time period goes offline before your renting period is over. It is not clear if you will be compensated in any way for the downtime or you will only loose your money, so at if you decide to test the service at the moment do not rent rigs for too long periods. Another thing we are currently missing in the service is a comment for and rating system for rigs, but hopefully we are going to see something like that added in the future as well.

rigs-online-rent-a-rig

If you want to lease the hashrate of your Ethereum mining rig you go through a simple setup process similar to that of the renting of rigs. Here it is very important to setup a default pool URL where your mining rig will be mining at when it is waiting to be rented by somebody. Here you can set a full pool URL with the default example set for Supernova, but you should be able to use different pool as well. Unfortunately with the rig renting here you also don’t have the ability to edit your rig once you set it up, so if you want to change something you need to setup a new mining rig available for renting. After you add your mining rig to sell your hashrate you will need to point the ethminer on that rig to a special URL that will be given to you pointing to the Rigs Online service – apparently a proxy that handles the renting process and switching between your backup pool and the user’s preferred mining pool when the rig is rented.

So in short the Rigs Online service does look promising, however it currently comes with the very basic functionality available and there is a lot of work needed to still be done. The service is promising, but there is some more work needed to be done before it becomes fully functional and offer all the things that you will normally expect from such a service. So you are welcome to try it, but do just small deposits in order to be able to try renting a rig or try adding your mining rig as a test.

For more information and to try out the new Rigs Online service…

Weipool Has Released the Source of Their Ethereum Mining Pool

weipool-front-page

Suddenly it became much easier to start your own mining pool for Ethereum or any of the forks that it already has thanks to Weipool who have released their full pool source code. You can find the source code of the pool backend, it is relying on geth as an Ethereum client as well as the source code of the pool frontend. Aside from the Geth Ethereum client the pool software needs Redis and Node.js, there isn’t much documentation available, but you should be able to quickly figure things out. The front-end is pretty basic, so you might want to make it a bit more prettier and more functional, but other than that you should be able to have a basic pool up and running in no time. You can visit Weipool for a working example of the code, unfortunately the pools itself has not managed to attract a lot of miners and keep them there, even though it was announced when there were not that much pools for Ethereum available.

21 Inc Has Announced the 21 Bitcoin Computer

21-inc-bitcoin-computer

The 21 Bitcoin Computer is the first computer with native hardware and software support for the Bitcoin protocol according to the company that had made it – 21 Inc. That means the hardware to provide a constant stream of Bitcoin and the software to make that bitcoins useful for buying and selling digital goods and additionally developers can use the 21 Bitcoin Computer to quickly create apps, services, and devices that can be rented or bought for bitcoin.

The 21 Bitcoin Computer is a special board with an ASIC mining chip that is attached to a Raspberry Pi 2 chassis, and comes with a WiFi and power adapter, 128 GB SD card, USB-to-laptop cable, and everything you need to run it either as a standalone machine or to provide bitcoin to a Mac, Windows, or Linux computer. It comes with a full copy of the Blockchain pre-loaded on a 128GB SD card meaning that the computer will briefly synchronize with the network when you plug it in, after which point it will run as a full node by default without further intervention.

21-inc-bitcoin-computer-2

If you are interested what the dedicated ASIC chip is capable of, it seems that the 21 Bitcoin Chip has an efficiency of approximately 0.16 Joules per Gigahash and can calculate 50-125 Gigahashes per second. So apparently the focus is not only on providing you with a compact and not very powerful mining solution, but instead a device that can be used for supporting the Bitcoin network and can be used by users for offering goods or services taking payments in Bitcoin with the mining just adding a bit probably enough to cover the costs of running the hardware. You can already pre-order the 21 Bitcoin Computer for $399.99 USD and it will start shipping on November 16, 2015.

The $400 USD price tag is a bit steep if you consider the device as a Bitcoin mining-only solution due to the fact that it is not that powerful, even though it seems pretty efficient in terms of power usage even for the low hashrate it offers. It seems that was not designed to be used as a typical mining hardware like the other ASIC miners for Bitcoin, but instead the main target seem to be developers that are willing to write applications or integrate it as a part of a product or service that they are already offering as a means to integrate Bitcoin support. So miners are probably not going to be interested in the device, but developers might take some interest in this standalone solution, but it seems we’ll see what will happen in November when it hits the market.

For additional details about the 21 Bitcoin Computer introduced by 21 Inc…

5 Ways to Be Completely Anonymous Online

Anonymity while surfing on the internet is not easy to maintain. Attackers and government agencies alike keep a track of your web activity and identity, with the former trying to infiltrate your system and violate your privacy. A lot has been going on recently to ring people’s minds with the fact that nobody is safe on the internet these days. Recently, the Ashley Madison Hack compromised over 37 million users. Now that is a staggering amount. It only goes to show how little people do to protect their identity and be anonymous while surfing on the internet.

Litecoin (LTC) Hashrate Analysis Post Halving

official-litecoin-logo

Charlie Lee, the creator of of the popular alternative crypto currency Litecoin, has posted on Reddit a short and interesting analysis on why a few weeks after the first block reward halving the difficulty and price of LTC has returned to the level it was prior to the event. Below you can find his post quoted:

After the halving one would expect that either the price will go up or the hashrate must drop. This is because mining is designed with a Nash equilibrium of miner profit reaching 0 over time. So if miners are running at near 0 profit, and suddenly their revenue gets cut in half, miners would need to turn off their machines unless they are willing to mine at a loss.

The halving happened, and the price stayed the same. The hashrate dropped a little but then climbed back up pretty quickly to the previous level. That’s really unexpected, but I think I have an explanation. I talked to some Chineses miners at Scaling Bitcoin and learned something interesting. Most miners have found electricity for free or close to 0 cost. Chinese hydro power plants are sometimes generating too much electricity. That electricity goes to waste if it’s unused. So these plants have either sold the electricity for near 0-cost or they have partnered with miners to give them free electricity for a revenue share.

So this makes total sense now. If the electricity is free or close to 0 cost, then there’s no reason for miners to shut down their machines. They make half as much, but still profitable. These miners have also been asking around at the conference to try to buy old outdated Bitcoin/Litecoin ASICs. With 0-cost electricity, they can keep those machines running and still make money.

We considered the possibility that the reason behind was the introduction of newer generation of Scrypt ASIC miners from SFARDS and Innosilicon and the companies making them stacking up on hardware in their own mining data centers. But the possibility of a lot of Asian miners with zero cost to very very very cheap electricity mining with whatever hardware they can get and still profiting also sounds like a good enough reason. If that ends up being the actual reason it presents a bit of a problem for the normal home miners and small mining operations based outside of Asia that still need to pay for electricity and thus have higher cost for mining and smaller to no profit at all…

Ethereum Solo Mining Proxy Now Available

ether-proxy

Those that actually solo mine crypto coins are familiar with the not user friendly way that things happen and mostly the lack of details on your solo mining statistics over time unlike when using a mining pool. Ethereum is a no exclusion from that rule when solo mining and with not that many pools and some pools having issues, even though the difficulty of the network is not that small, there are still quite a lot of people that solo mine… especially if they have more than just a few GPUs. There is now a new open source project called ether-proxy which essentially is an Ethereum solo mining proxy that can help you keep track on how your solo mining for Ether is going on with multiple mining rigs, though it will work even with a single one. EtherProxy relies on Go and needs geth (the Ethereum Go client in order to function as a backend) with the mining part happening just like you do with ethminer pointed at a mining pool. In the local proxy url you set for ethminer to use you can set the share difficulty as well as an ID for each mining instance (or mining rig) that you are using. All the basic stats that you need is being displayed in a clean and simple web-based interface for you to keep track on things like running status of mining rigs, hashrate, blocks found and so on. If you want to try the project yourself, there is already a Windows binary release available to save you some trouble or you can compile from the source code yourself.

Ethereum is Getting More User Friendly with AlethOne

alethone-gui-rc2

The C++ implementation of the Ethereum client (cpp-ethereum) is getting more user friendly with the new AlethOne GUI intended to simplify the mining process for users that are not into programming and hate to use console-based software. The AlethOne GUI is going to be a part of the eth client, though currently it is only available in a release candidate form and it will be interfacing with the eth client. The first time you run the GUI it will ask you for a password and will generate an Ethereum wallet address, then start synchronizing the blockchain. The good thing is that AlethOne presents the user with a simple interface and reports in an easy to read details about the functionality of the eth client in the backend such as the Ether balance you have or the blockchain synchronization status or even the hashrate when mining. As for the mining you get an easy option for solo mining or pool mining with a field to enter the pool URL to mine at and after you have mined some coins you have the option to easily initiate a transfer to another account.

So far the latest release candidate of AlethOne looks quite nice and works decently, though there are apparently some more things that need work before the final release is available. For example it seems that the mining is only working on the first GPU and if you have multiple video cards that you want to mine with there is no way to tell the miner to use them all form the GUI apparently. The Withdraw functionality also needs some more work in te form of any feedback returned in the AlethOne GUI regarding the execution of the transaction such as if it was successful or not etc. Regardless things are already looking good and the AlethOne GUI with some more improvement and fixes is definitely something that Ethereum needs in order to become easier to be used by not so advanced users – basic wallet and mining functionality in a streamlined desktop client.

You can download and try the latest cpp-ethereum with AlethOne release candidate 2…

British Monarchy is Richer Than Ever

The British monarchy is richer than ever. Queen Elizabeth became the longest serving royal ever on September 9 after 63 years on the throne. Reuters found that the British monarchy has benefitted from an increase in house and land prices especially in the wake of the 2007 global financial crisis.  The queen has made headlines by using thrifty space heaters to keep her "chilly" palaces warm. In recent days, however, she has made headlines for a different reason: her family's vast wealth after years on the throne. According to spokespeople, the queen is actually thrifty, owning little more than a […]

Litecoin (LTC) Difficulty Back to Where it Was

litecoin-difficulty-chart

After the recent Litecoin (LTC) block reward halving we’ve seen some drop in the total network hashrate and thus difficulty as well as a direct result from the new lower rewards as a result of mining. The exchange rate of Litecoin did not change much, but with the lower difficulty things were looking like they would balance – smaller reward, but easier to mine. Interestingly enough a few days after the block reward halving the difficulty of LTC has started rising again and has already reached back the level where it was before the halving and it seems that it will continue to rise. This development rises some questions as to what is happening, so that the difficulty is rising and the exchange rate remains the same while the block reward is half of what it was previously. The only reasonable answer would be that somebody is bringing online new generation of more efficient Scrypt ASIC miners, otherwise with old generation hardware a lot of people would be mining LTC at a loss. There are not that many options available, probably SFARDS is stacking up their new SF100 miners for own use in a data center or maybe Innosilicon is ready with their next generation of Scrypt ASIC chips and are doing the same…

New Zealand Book Ban First In 22 Years

In a dramatic move, New Zealand banned its first book in decades on Monday. The award-winning teen novel, Into The River, won the New Zealand Post children’s book of the year in 2013 and includes portrayals of sex and bullying. Auckland-based author Ted Dawe did not see the ban coming. "It's extraordinary," Dawe told the New Zealand Herald. "I've had quite a few emails from people who share that sense of outrage. Do we live in a country where books get banned? I'll get burnt next." In the book, a Maori boy wins a scholarship to an exclusive Auckland boarding […]

First Open Source Ethereum Mining Pool Released

ethpool-core-source-code

Etherchain have released an open source implementation of pooled mining for Ethereum. Do note however that this software is not a complete mining pool as it only takes care of work distribution and share validation; valid shares are stored into a local database (LevelDB). Reward calculation and payments are not yet implemented, but it should be possible to integrate this software some of the existing open source mining pools. The current implementation is in Go and it might not be the most effective one, apparently the pool is able to process ~600 workers at 30% CPU utilization (1 core) and 70MB RAM usage. The pool has been tested successfully with both the go Ethereum client (geth) and the cpp Ethereum client (eth) as a backend. And while it may not be a complete implementation with full functionality and web-based interface it is still a good starting point for anyone interested in running a mining pool for Ethereum without having to start from scratch.

SeachTrade Uses Bitcoin to Reward People using the Search Platform

A Singapore-based startup, SearchTrade, has introduced a system to allow all parties in the Internet search engine process – the searcher, the owner of the key word being searched, the builder of the app using the search engine, and the advertisers – to profit from the process using bitcoin. Using bitcoin, the system redistributes the revenue among the stakeholders in the process, rather than allowing all the profit to flow to the big search engines like Google and Bing. “Search is the single most important activity on the Internet,” said Vishal Gupta, co-founder and CEO of SearchTrade. Everyone does it, […]
