Talkether – an Ethereum mining pool with decentralized mining process

talkether-mining-pool

Talkether is Ethereum’s first pool with a decentralized mining process according to the creators of the project. It is supposed to help secure the Ethereum network by decentralizing it more and also to help miners have higher mining rewards compared to other pools due to higher mining efficiency. The pool has a built-in failover since miners set their user id in the extradata of each block even in the improbable case of a server downtime each miner of a block (identified by the extradata in the block) will get full block reward.

During the closed alpha test of the pool that has finished recently, miners are reported to have experienced up to 20% higher rewards compared to the pools they used before. This is because there are no mining time losses for getting the work from the pool since each miner of the Talkether pool gets its work from his local node. The Talkether Ethereum mining pool is now open for registrations for everyone interested in trying it out, but do have in mind that it is still in beta with zero fees until the beta phase is over.

Like every other mining pool Talkether’s pool reduces the variance of the mining rewards of the pool miners. But instead of polling the work from a poolserver like in traditional pools, miners of the pool fetch the current work from their local node (you need the Geth client installed). A small java tool adjusts the block’s difficulty, sends mined share blocks over a secured connection to the Talkether share server and publishes all blocks on local node of the miners as well. The share server takes the share blocks, validates and saves them in the database. As all pool miners are mining in the Talkether’s pool etherbase, the high secured payout server manages payouts with the common PPLNS scheme.

The website garners two million monthly visitors with annual revenue of approximately $18 million. Widely considered the industry leading website, Weedmaps founder CEO Justin Hartfield has a unique point of view on the industry. Reality Check: Bitcoin Plays A Bit Role In Terror Financing

Is bitcoin really the preferred currency of terrorists? You might think so from reading some of the mainstream media headlines. But a recent intergovernmental study on terrorist financing paints a very different picture. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a Paris-based, intergovernmental body that develops policies to protect the global financial system against money laundering, terrorist financing and financing of weapons of mass destruction, recently released a report called Emerging Terrorist Financing Risks. There is a small section in the report about virtual currency as a tool for this financing, but the 48-page report says foreign terrorist groups are primarily […]

Updated ccMiner 1.7-dev fork by tpruvot from Git for Windows

ccminer-1-7-dev-tpruvot

We have not compiled a Windows binary from the Git source of tpruvot’s ccminer fork for quite some time and he has been quite actively working on version 1.7, though it is still not ready for an official release. So we have decided it is time to compile a Windows binary from the latest ccminer 1.7-dev (source), so that you can try it out if you are interested. Tpruvot has been rewriting a lot of things in his fork for the upcoming official 1.7 release, so there are quite a lot of changes as well as new features implemented. So you can use this release just for trying it out and if you want more stability and reliability you should probably stick to the previous 1.6.6 release. This Windows binary is compiled with VS2013 and CUDA 6.5 and supports Compute 2.1, 3.0, 5.0 and 5.2 GPUs, but do have in mind that not all of the supported algorithms may work on older Compute 2.1/3.0 GPUs, but if you have an older Nvidia-based video card this is the ccminer fork you will need.

ZeusHash Has Apparently Stopped Paying Its Customers

zeushash-payment-issue

ZeusHash has never been the best cloud mining service and even when they tried partnering with a large Chinese mining farm to provide cloud mining hashrate to its customers their offers were never that attractive. We have essentially stopped covering the service as nothing worth mentioning about it has happened in the last few months, but it seems that now there is something important happening. We haven’t even checked our mining account with a few hundred GHS there for quite some time until we have started receiving reports from users that ZeusHash has stopped paying mining dividends to its customers after 20th of October. It seems that many if not all accounts are affected including ours as there have been no mining dividends paid starting 21st of October.

There has been no official announcement about why no new dividends are being added to users accounts, but with the high price of Bitcoin at the moment the reason is definitely because of mining becoming non-profitable. Trying to reach support users are getting a response that there is an issue they are aware of and than there will be a compensation for the downtime, however nothing has happened for a few days already. So we would not recommend anyone that is considering getting cloud mining hashrate to go for ZeusHash, and if you already have purchased some mining capacity there you should contact support until they finally fix the problem and compensate you for the downtime. The fact that many if not all users have been affected and there is no official announcement from ZeusHash few days later already is not reassuring at all.

Restaurant Review: San Diego's Tostadas North Park Combines Fresh Fruit & Fish For Bitcoin

Gerry Torres, owner of the gritty yet clean City Tacos in San Diego’s North Park neighborhood, opened Tostada’s down the street on August 15. He did so quietly, confident in his concept. Both of his restaurants accept Bitcoin through the Bitcoin wallet Airbitz. “I wanted to get a little exposure and have people trickle in,” Torres told me. “You want to go slow and take it easy and make sure things are right. So far, so good, people seem to be enjoying it.” When you walk into Tostada’s, large windows and bright walls welcome you into the open, vibrant and […]

Genesis Mining just noted that the X11 hashing power they’ve had available is completely sold out due to unforeseen high demand and that they are working on expanding capacities. The X11 cloud mining hashrate that was available for sale was entirely supplied by GPUs, so they will need to upgrade adding more video cards before new hashrate is available and they will due to the apparently high demand for such hashrate. Meanwhile if you are interested they still have plenty of SHA256 hashrate available for sale, so you can still check what the cloud mining service provide has in stock for you.

Earn Daily Ether Dividends (Ethereum) with EMBS

An increasing number of people see Bitcoin’s disruptive power every day. If Bitcoin technology is about a rupture in the old centralized database model to a new decentralized database model – where third party interference is not possible – Ethereum’s technology (Blockchain 2.0) can go even further.

Ethereum enables you to create any software/app in a decentralized way, where downtimes, censoring, and arbitrariness are not possible. Metaphorically speaking, if Bitcoin will replace credit cards and money remittance companies, Ethereum will replace entities that provide support to today’s contracts, like notary public offices, who solely exist for this purpose.

The Ethereum technology platform development gets faster every day. A few weeks ago, Augur crowdfunding raised over $5 million, becoming one of the most funded Ethereum companies in the world. Additionally, Mist wallet was launched, which will enable you to store your Ethers and make smart-contracts as well.

Ethereum has already proven to be a highly profitable project for investors. Those who invested in early Ethers’ crowdsales – currency used for payments in Ethereum code – made up to 10x their investment’s value.

This technology’s early investors have everything to gain. That is why bnktothefuture.com created #EMBS – Ethereum Mining Backed Security Fund.

What is the Ether Mining Backed Security?
Ether Mining Backed Security (EMBS) was created by BnktToTheFuture as a niche investment product for investors that want to invest in Ether cryptocurrency. It is an investment product that combines daily income denominated in Ether with the potential for high return capital growth. It utilizes new alternative financial innovations like mining and cryptocurrency (Ether) to create an expected high risk, high return investment opportunity.

NiceHash Miner, a New Profit Switching Mining Application

nicehash-miner

The guys at NiceHash have released a beta version of their own easy-to-use best-profit auto-switching application called NiceHash Miner. The software detects what crypto mining capable hardware you have in your systems (for now supports only Nvidia GPUs and CPU mining), checks your hashrate and automatically switches to the most profitable algorithm available to give you the best profit for your hashrate. All you have to do is download and run the miner, choose the server location and enter your Bitcoin wallet address where you want to get your coins sent at and you are almost ready to start mining and maximizing your profit. As a backend the NiceHash Miner relies on the cpuminer-multi form tpruvot for CPU mining and to the ccminer forks from tpruvot and sp for the Nvidia GPU mining.

nicehash-miner-benchmark

The first time you run the NiceHash Miner software you will need to go through the Benchmark mode in order for the software to determine what your mining hashrate will provide in terms of hashrate for the different supported algorithm. Then you are ready to start mining with all or only a few of the mining capable CPUs/GPUs you have available – you can choose what you want to mine with. There is however still no support for you to chose only some of the supported algorithm, so you are stuck with all of the available in the software. We are probably soon also going to see an OpenCL miner such as sgminer integrated to add support for AMD GPUs as well, but for now if you have AMD GPUs you can still rely on the Miner Control Tool for example for automatic profit switching at NiceHash/Westhash. Their own tool does look promising and works pretty well, but it needs more work and features, also do not forget that it is still in beta. Still you might want to give it a try though…

There are many ways to gamble, from scratch-off and lottery tickets to slot machines and skill-based games like poker, as well as betting on sports events. The latter games aren't legal everywhere, with the local governments preferring to have an exclusive monopoly over gambling. Although Illinois has some legal casinos, they are dwarfed […]

Ethpool Now With New Stratum Etherum Mining Support

qtminer-stratum-ethereum-miner

Ethpool was the first mining pool for mining Ethereum’s Ether coins, however it had some issues, was down for a while and then returned with a new concept – predictable solo mining pool. A predictable solo mining pool allows you to do pooled mining with a solo mining payment scheme, meaning that the miner who contributed the most work to the pool for each round will receive the full reward of the found block (or uncle) and his work account (credits) will be reset to his current credits minus the credits of the runner up miner. This simply means that depending on your available hashrate it may take more time to get your reward, but once you get it it will be a full block reward. Apparently the downtime and the new concept along with the low exchange rate for Ethereum’s Ether coins lately are not doing Ethpool much good, but they have not stopped working on new things.

The latest addition is stratum support instead of the getwork that is typically used by the regular ethminer software. The introduction of stratum support requires users to use a special fork of ethminer that is called qtminer (source) that has been developed by Ethpool and is ONLY supported by their mining pool for the moment. A while ago another pool – Dwarfpool, has introduced a Stratum proxy as we’ve mentioned earlier on the blog, but their proxy implementation is not as good as actually having a dedicated stratum protocol supported by the miner itself.

The command line of qtminer is very similar to that of Ethminer, you can check the HELP.txt file included in the Windows binary available for download below for the supported commands. As with ethminer, qtminer supports OpenCL mining on both AMD and Nvidia GPUs, there is no CUDA support available for Nvidia for the moment, and you should not be getting much different performance in terms of hashrate between ethminer and qtminer (AMD video cards still perform better than Nvidia ones). The actual difference is in the protocol used to get shares and submit them which should result in improved performance when you are using stratum instead of getwork due to better efficiency of the stratum communication protocol. Do note that you can still use Ethpool with ethminer and the getwork protocol if you are not satisfied with the results you get from the new qtminer with stratum support.

The new qtminer stratum pool supports vardiff, so the difficulty will be automatically adjusted by the pool itself based on the hashrate you submit thus taking the guesswork and the need to find the optimal difficulty yourself. The result should be more efficient getting of new work and submitting of solved shares using constant stratum connection to the server and thus more mined coins for the same period of time as compared to using ethminer with getwork polling the server all the time. Looking at the logs of the qtminer and testing briefly the new stratum miner is showing that it works better than ethminer, make sure you allow a bit of time to get a good estimate on the current hashrate reported by the pool and estimated earning before drawing any conclusions. You should definitely give qtminer a try if you are currently mining for Ethereum’s (ETH) Ether coins on a pool with the traditional etminer, you might be pleasantly surprised by the improvement.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is investigating why some Australian banks are closing bitcoin business bank accounts, according to the Australian Financial Review. The Australian Financial Review previously reported that 17 bitcoin companies in Australia received letters from banks saying they planned to close their accounts. Nationals Senator Matthew Canavan asked the ACCC to investigate the matter. Rod Sims, chairman of ACCC, said banks have been asked to explain their actions. He said the commission is also asking the banks what contact they had with each other over these actions. Sims said he hoped to find out why […]

New Optimized OpenCL Kernel for Myriad-Groestl

sgminer-myriad-groestl-optimized-kernel

A user called ghostlander on Bitcointalk has released a new optimized OpenCL kernel for the Myriad-Groestl algorithm that is supposed to give you at least 10% increase in performance compared to the public kernel available, but in reality the hashrate increase is much more significant. We have tested the new kernel with a Radeon R9 280X GPU and got over 31 MHS while with the latest sgminer kernel we have managed to get only about 10 MHs or with other words about 200% increase using intensity of 19. You can try to increase the intensity a bit more if your GPU manages to handle it ot squeeze a bit more extra performance as well over 19. So if you are mining a coin using the Myriad-Groestl such as DigiByte or Myriad on AMD hardware you should definitely consider upgrading the kernel (just replace the old .cl file with the new one) to get a lot of extra performance and increase your hashrate.

This Country Has Fewer Poor Than America, 80% Of Bitcoin Transactions

Which country has fewer poor than American and 80% of the Bitcoin transactions? Although it might come as a surprise, the answer is China. Despite a stock market and currency crisis, China has fewer poor than America, according to a Credit Suisse report. Yet, there is one thing of which this report falls a bit short: good data. Much of the data in the report is from government bodies and international bodies. People with firsthand knowledge of each country might take contention therewith. Nonetheless, CCN wondered if Credit Suisse's numbers could explain China's large Bitcoin volume.  According to the Credit […]

Bitcoin Price is on the Rise Again

bitcoin-price-increase

The last few days the exchange rate of Bitcoin (BTC) has been steadily going up and today it has surpassed the $270 USD mark and that may not be the highest point it may reach this time. So you might want to keep a closer look at how things progress, though unfortunately it seems that the peak in price of BTC is not affecting much other coins as Litecoin this time. LTC has been keeping a steady exchange rate for a while now at a little above $3 USD. The exchange rate for ETH/BTC is going down, but due to the increase of the price per BTC the USD/EUR rate for Ethereum is still keeping relatively stable, but low level. This market situation is resulting in miners looking for some alternative coins to try mining and maybe get a better profit instead of the more established or popular ones in the last few days. The results is clearly seen in some altcoins having temporary spikes like DGB or GeoCoin among others, so you might want to keep an eye on the altcoin market for other not so popular names as well.

The Interest in DigiByte Has Skyrocketed Temporary

digibyte-logo

The alternative crypto currency DigiByte (DGB) has shown a temporary peak in interest with trading on exchanges that literally skyrocketed many times over other coins that are more popular, but again this was only a temporary peak in interest and thus in the price of the coin. The interesting thing about DigiByte is that it uses five independent mining algorithms to process transactions over the network with each algorithm accounts for about 20% of all blocks discovered on the network. This allows for greater decentralization as currently three of the five DigiByte algorithms are ASIC resistant and much better for GPU miners. The best GPU algorithms to mine on are Skein, Groestl and Qubit and you can also mine Scrypt and SHA-256 with an ASIC if you already have one. The DGB coin is traded on some of the large altcoin exchanges such as Cryptsy and Bittrex among others, so if you are looking for something new to try on you might give DigiByte a go though in the next few days we are probably going to see it get back to the previous price levels.

Swift Payments CEO Doesn't See Block Chain Replacing Current 'Efficient' Banking Systems

While Swift CEO Gottfried Leibbrandt acknowledges that block chain technology is here to stay, he believes some of the current fintech being spoken about is “hype” and notes that blockchains in the private sphere are more substantial than it getting to replace existing commercial banking systems. Speaking to the Financial Times, international payments network Swift CEO believes there to be an underlying “hype” when it comes fintech and claims that the current financial industry ought to be more worried about the current state of cybersecurity rather than disruptive technology. The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) hosts the annual […]

“Knowledge Market” Synapsi.com Offers Serious Potential for Bitcoin & Programmers

Independent journalist Bailey Reutzel recently wrote about the often undiscussed problem with open source software (hint: it's not open source itself). The problem she surmised (and confirmed in an interview with OpenBazaar CEO Manu Sporny), and which many agree with after decades of seeing the cycle, is that corporations rely on open source software for their profit model but do little to compensate the hardworking volunteers. Her article centers around the OpenSSL project, which suffered a serious vulnerability in recent memory with the Heartbleed bug. She points out that only a couple of full-time programmers are attached to the project, […]

The UK Treasury Is Embracing Block Chain, Digital Currencies and Big Data Research

The UK Government’s Ministry for Economy and Finance - Her Majesty’s Treasury, tasked with setting the UK’s future economic policies is steadfast in its approval and welcoming of block chain technology and digital currencies. It started when the UK Treasury issued a public call in November 2014, seeking inputs for ways to effectively regulate digital currency. “What are the potential benefits of (this) distributed ledger technology? How significant are these benefits?” was one of 13 questions asked during the “call for information”; while fully acknowledging the fact that intermediaries such as banks wouldn’t be needed in such a system. In […]
