Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Overclocking and Mining Hashrate

nvidia-gtx-1070-overclock-settings

Time for some overclocking of the GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition and running the tests again to see what hashrate increase can we expect from the GPU with the increased operating frequencies. The Founders Edition cards are somewhat limited in the max power you can get, but the good news is that the GTX 1070 FE still has the same 8-pin PCI-E power like the 1080, even though its default TDP limit has been lowered to 151W and the Power Limiter allows for just 12% increase over the default TDP (169W max TDP). There is already a tool for flashing modified video BIOS files available, so now the only thing we need figured out is how to modify the TDP limits in BIOS and other settings such as frequencies and voltages in order to be able to squeeze some additional extra performance over the stock clock capabilities of the Founders Edition cards and even more from the non-reference designs that are already starting to become available on the market.

We already know that the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 GPUs are handling quite well overclocking and you can squeeze quite a bit extra performance from them if you are not limited and don’t care than much about the power usage. We are trying the GTX 1070 Founders Edition to see what it can do withing its current limits without touching the core voltage and what we got was: Power Limit + 12%, Core Clock + 210 MHs, Memory Clock + 830 MHs, the max settings that are running stable for 24/7 mining on our test card and the results are below. Do note that these can vary from card to card, so you should experiment until you find what works best for you. Regardless it seems that the GTX 1070 FE cards are doing quite well in terms of overclocking in general, so you should expect an nice extra performance boost from them and even more from the non-reference designs.

nvidia-gtx-1070-overclocked-hashrate

The performance increase we get after overclocking the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition card with the clock settings above are pretty much consistent with what the GTX 1080 FE shows. The performance boost in terms of hashrate increase in the various algorithms is about 12-14% higher than at the stock settings and better results could be achieved with increase of the voltages, however with that you will also need to be careful that you are fitting in the TDP limit. It is interesting to note that the GTX 1070 FE does perform better on NeoScrypt (668 KHS stock/771 KHS overclocked) than the 1080 FE, but it it still outperformed by the GTX 980 Ti for example. It seems that the slower GDDR5 video memory used here does perform better with the memory intensive algorithms unlike the faster GDDR5X memory used in the 1080, however the GTX 1070 still needs some fixes for NeoScrypt. As already noted the situation with Pascal GPUs including the GTX 1080 and the GTX 1070 is the same for Ethereum mining under Windows resulting in very low hashrates, so while waiting for a driver fix you might want to go for Linux for Ethereum mining on these cards. All other algorithms we have tested besides the not so great NeoScrypt performance are doing well under Windows 7 and 10, so mining for these you don’t need to rely on Linux, especially if you are no good with it.

Optimizing the Power Usage of AMD Radeon RX 480 for Ethereum Mining

rx-480-def-power-limiter

If you have checked our publication Testing the AMD Radeon RX 480 for Ethereum Mining you should already know that at the moment you are a bit limited in your capabilities of reducing the power usage of the new RX 480 GPUs. The pretty much only way to lower the power usage for mining Ethereum with Radeon RX 480 is to use the Power Target reducing it below the 100% value (150W TDP) and thus forcing the GPU to lower its operating voltage and frequency in order to still fit in the allowed TDP. Using a lower operating frequency and voltage for the GPU with the power limiter set at the right value should lower the power consumption, but not change the performance you get while mining Ethereum. Further lowering it below that optimum spot and you will start seeing a drop in mining performance, so our goal here was to find the sweet spot where the hashrate will not be affected.

We have started with the default settings of the RX 480 for both the GPU (1266 MHz) and the VRAM (8000 MHz) and started lowering the Power Target slider until we have reached the 83% – the value at which the power is getting reduced, but the hashrate remains the same. Going below 83% percent of the 150W TDP started lowering the hashrate below the regular value at 100% power. The result was 149 Watt drawn at the wall, taking in consideration the PSU power efficiency that should be about 130W actual power usage. This is down from 177W at the wall with default settings with pretty much the hashrate unaffected and the temperature also went down from 68 to about 60 degrees Celsius.

rx-480-oc-power-limiter

Repeating the same procedure as above, but with the video memory set at 9000 MHz and the Power Target set a bit higher at 85% we saw a very slight decrease in performance with just about 5W extra power usage at the wall (155W). The performance we got with this setting was about 27.8-27.9 MHS and the operating temperature was down from about 72 degrees to about 63 degrees Celsius, so definitely a good improvement. For the moment the only way to reduce the power usage without a drop in performance is by lowering the TDP limit under the default value of 100% and you can easily reduce the power consumption with something like 30 Watt at the wall (if using 80 Plus Gold PSU). You can experiment by further reducing the power target slider under these recommended values, however with the additional power savings you should also start noticing reduction of the hashrate you are getting. Still if you are looking for optimal efficiency you might try going lower and if you already have Radeon RX 480 and use it for Ethereum mining you are welcome to share your settings in the comments below.

Testing the AMD Radeon RX 480 for Ethereum Mining

amd-radeon-rx-480

The new AMD Radeon RX 480 is now officially out and we have some results from tests we have actually performed ourselves, results that pretty much confirm an earlier leak that was posted about the expected hashrate. As you will see the number of tested algorithms is only one – Ethereum’s Ethash as it seems that there are some problems at the moment running sgminer with most algorithms on RX 480… could be a driver issue, could be something else. Anyway, we are sure that most of you are interested in the Ethereum hashrate that the RX 480 is able to deliver and we have information about that. The hashrate for Ethereum mining that thr Radeon RX 480 delivers is good, though the power level is not that great, the cooling of the reference design RX 480 is also not that great for mining and the price is also not what some people in some regions expected and on top on shortages, though in many places you can buy the card at the price that AMD announced or close to it and there are enough cards.

Before we move to the tests we should note that there are two variants of the Radeon RX 480, one with 4GB video memory that apparently runs at 7 GHz and is with a lower price (the $199 USD price) and a more expensive 8GB model with memory running at 8 GHz. At launch it is hard to find 4GB versions as apparently they are much fewer as compared to the 8GB models, but if you are buying a card for mining the 8GB model is the one you would want. We have tested an ASUS reference design Radeon RX 480 card with 8GB and 8 GHz video memory, so the results below are for mining Ethereum with that card. The 4GB model with 7 GHz video memory should be slower by about 2-3 MHs compared to the 8GB 8 GHz version, so if you are buying these for mining Ethereum go for the 8 GB models.

rx-480-claymore-ethereum-default

We are using Claymore’s Dual Miner, starting with the default settings of 1266 MHz for the GPU and 8 GHz for the video memory withing the standard 150W TDP limit of the Radeon RX 480 GPU. The result we are getting is about 24.7-24.8 MHS at stock settings with GPU-Z reported power usage of about 108 W, but with actual power usage measured at the wall of 177 Watt. So taking into account the power conversion efficiency of an 80 Plus Gold PSU that was used the actual power usage of the card is apparently 150W at the default settings. This is further confirmed by the fact that while mining Ethereum with the default settings the GPU frequency hovers up to about 1240 MHz and does not go all the way up to 1266 MHz. Essentially hitting the power limit of 150W that the card has, increasing a bit the power limiter by a few percent over the default 100% allows the GPU to stay at the full 1266 MHz… not that it makes any difference for mining Ethereum, but it could be important for other not so video memory intensive crypto algorithms.

With dual mining mode enabled to mine both Ethereum and Decred at the same time the results show about 24.3 MHS for Ethereum and about 365 MHS for Decred (at default intensity of 30). Further increasing the Decred intensity to 35 decreased the Ethereum hashrate to about 24 MHS and increases the Decred mining hashrate to about 450 MHS. So essentially the RX 480 does pretty well in dual mining mode with not so much of a drop in the Ethereum hashrate while providing some good extra performance for mining Decred.

rx-480-claymore-ethereum-overclocked

Moving to overclocking, the only thing we need to do is increase the video memory to the maximum and in this case this means 9 GHz (the card might be able to handle more, but the overclocking software or the driver is apparently capped at 9 GHz max). With the video memory at 9 GHz the RX 480 is capable of delivering about 28 MHS hashrate for mining Ethereum. It is highly possible that even higher hashrate could be achieved if you manage to get past the 9 GHz limit for the video memory, but for the moment AMD’s WattMan software or the Asus tool that we used do not currently allow for more. With the memory overclocked the power usage is increased with just about 7-8 Watt at the wall, so definitely worth overclocking it for mining Ethereum. We were a bit disappointed by the lack of overclockability headroom of the GPU that was able to get just about 1340 MHz with the stock voltage. Of course no point in overclocking it for Ethereum mining, in fact you might want to actually downclock it to get better power efficiency if mining only Ethereum.

asus-rx-480-overclocked-ethereum

What we are not too happy with is the stock cooling solution and how it handles the heat from the RX 480. AMD has optimized the default profile for the fan to keep the card silent and very hot, so obviously it is a no go for mining. What seems to work pretty well is setting up the fan to about 80% and getting decent temperatures with a moderately noisy card – good choice if noise from the mining rig can be an issue. With the cooling fan at 80% you can expect temperatures of about 72 degrees Celsius for the GPU, something that is a bit higher than you’d probably want for 24/7 mining. Going for 100% fan the noise increases significantly and the temperatures drops to about 68 degrees Celsius, so not by much.

We are not too happy with the power usage and the hashrate you get from the RX 480 for mining Ethereum, we kind of expected better results in that area. But then again by lowering the GPU operating voltage and frequency you might be able to get better power efficiency without actually loosing any performance and this is a must if you are mining Ethereum… that is if you are actually able to downclock the GPU, a modified video BIOS with the right settings might be a good solution to that problem, but that would also need some time.

We are going to be doing some more tests to see if things with the sgminer crashing on most algorithms and looking for other options to improve the power usage when mining Ethereum etc., so stay tuned for more info about the RX 480. For the moment however we are not very impressed by the new AMD Radeon RX 480, though a non-reference design with some extra tweaking might be able to change our opinion.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition Power Usage for Crypto Mining

gtx-1070-power-usage-1

Time for a quick look at the power usage of the GeForce GTX 1070, the reference design from Nvidia that has a TDP of 151W set by the manufacturer, making it pretty energy efficient for the performance it provides for crypto currency mining. We are checking the situation with the different algorithms apart from Ethereum, because we already know that the GTX 1070/1080 is far from great choice for Ethereum mining when using Windows and we are testing the mining for other algorithms with Windows 7.

Looking at the results from the different algorithms the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition does seem to be about 30% on average slower (25%-33%) compared to its bigger brother – the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition at the stock settings. The situation with the power usage difference between the two cards is also very similar to the performance difference in the tested algorithms. So the next very interesting question is how well the GTX 1070 will overclock and how will the OCed performance compare to a stock GTX 1080 and an overclocked one. We are going to be posting our results from the GTX 1070 overclock soon, so stay tuned for them.

gtx-1070-power-usage-2

While we were testing and comparing crypto mining performance we have actually noted that the comparison between GTX 1070 and GTX 980 Ti is actually more interesting as you can see from the table with results. As you can clearly see the GTX 1070 is slightly faster than GTX 980 Ti, but power usage wise it is much more efficient. This can give you a better idea on the evolution of performance and power usage between the previous and this generation of Nvidia GPUs. The GTX 1070 is also a more attractive choice for building multi-GPU mining rigs at the moment as compared to the GTX 1080, though you might want to wait a bit more for the non-reference designs to come out that will allow more serious overclocking and thus even better performance.

Storj Doing Final Beta Tests With Test Group C

storj-test-group-c

Storj has announce that they are launching the final beta testing of their upcoming blockchan-based distributed cloud storage service that uses dedicated crypto currency tokens as a rewards for users. The beta testers of Test Group C will test real world network conditions before the full official launch of the service later this year. The participants in the beta test will be rewarded with a total of 1,000,000 SJCX for contributing storage capacity and telemetry data to the network over the next few months.

The 1,000,000 SJCX will be rewarded to farmers based on their actual contributions to the network. Farmers will be compensated for the following: Storing data, Transferring data and Sending telemetry data. Do note that similar to previous stages of beta testing the service you are still required to have some SJCX coins in your wallet in order to be eligible for receiving full rewards. The minimum balance you need to maintain is 1000 SJCX, though if you have less than that you would apparently still get some rewards, but it could be less than the regular ones. This simply means that you would need to purchase 1000 SJCX coins if you already don’t have at lest that much in order to be able to participate and get full rewards. Do note however that participating in the beta tests of Storj so far has not been very profitable, so do not expect to make a lot of money helping in the latest test group of beta testers either. This is more for people that want to help and that are interested in the service and the idea behind it, once Storj finally launches the official network it might be more interesting for people that want to make some extra money.

Testing the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition for Crypto Mining

nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-founders-edition

Recently we have tested the new Nvidia Pascal-based GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition GPU for crypto mining and it is now the time to see what the little brother in the form of GTX 1070 is also capable of. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition is a little stripped down version of the current top model in the form of GTX 1080, but generally the two are not that different. The GPU on the GTX 1070 is a bit less powerful and the memory is regular DDR5 instead of the GDDR5X used in the 1080. The cooling solution, the backplate, even the 8-pin power connector are the same on both and that should signal a good overclocking potential for the GTX 1070 and the significantly better price makes it the more interesting of the two for crypto mining. Do note that the TDP rating of the GTX 1070 is just 151W and the power limiter allows you for just 12% increase over the stock limit, so you get 169 Watts max without having to resort to something like BIOS modification for example in order to be able to get serious in terms of overclocking. We are going to cover the overclock for the GeForce GTX 1070 and the mining hashrate with OC in a follow up article, for now we are comparing only the performance at stock settings.

We have already discussed the not so good situation with Ethereum mining on the GTX 1080 and unfortunately things are the same with the GTX 1070. Mining Ethereum under Windows is pointless at this point as the hashrate is verry low (issue with the video driver) and although this might be fixed at a later time with a driver update, for the moment the only option you have is Linux. The results under Linux are not great though the GTX 1070 apparently does perform better because of the GDDR5 memory even at lower frequencies as compared to the GDDR5X, especially when you overclock the GTX 1070. We are going to be doing some more testing for this under Linux at a later time in order to see what the new Nvidia Pascal-based GPUs are really capable of for mining crypto currencies based on the Dagger-Hashimoto algorithm like Ethereum, but for now we are focusing on the other algorithms.

geforce-gtx-1070-hashrate

The results we’ve got for other popular algorithms besides Ethereum’s Dagger-Hashimoto are pretty interesting as you can see from our summary in the table. It is interesting to note that the GTX 1070 is a bit faster in all algorithms besides Decred than the GTX 980 Ti and it does it with a significantly lower power usage. Price wise the GTX 1070 is still a bit more expensive than GTX 980 Ti, but the power savings on the long term should more than justify the difference. With that said we should note that the GTX 980 Ti has never been one of the popular Nvidia video cards among miners due to the pretty high price that it has been keeping. Compare to GTX 970 the new GTX 1070 is significantly faster, and the results of the 1070 were not that close to the ones from GTX 1080 as we’de hoped they could be. With some overclocking however we expect that the gap in performance between a stock GTX 1080 and the OCed GTX 1070 clould become pretty insignificant, but that would need some more testing to confirm.

Do note that we have not included results from Lyra2RE and NeoScrypt this time, because with both algorithms the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 did not perform well and would need some optimizations. In fact there is already an optimized version of ccMiner that fixes the performance issues with Lyra2RE that also brings quite big performance boost for older GPUs as well – ccMiner 1.7.6-r6 fork With Faster Lyra2RE, but for Neoscrypt the performance of the Pascal GPUs needs some work.

The Evolution of the Innosilicon A4 Dominator Scrypt ASIC Miners

innosilicon-a4-dominator

We have been keeping track on the development of the new Innosilicon A4 Dominator Scrypt ASIC miners since the initial announcement back in November last year and it is time for another update. It seems that Innosilicon is starting to take pre-orders for the final ASIC miners with shipping expected to start in September and there is already a thread on Bitcointalk about a group pre-order that you might want to check out if interested. In the past we have tested the previous generation of Innosilicon A2 Scrypt ASIC miners in the form of the 86 MHS A2BOX Innosilicon A2 Scrypt ASIC Miner that was consuming about 1000 Watts of power, so we can see what the development is and how good actually the new generation is going to be. A solid first generation Scrypt ASIC miner that was built well and performed really good when it was released with the only drawback being the very high initial price of the device, so we were anticipating another good solid product with much better specs when the first A4 details surfaced.

The initial announcement from last year claimed that the A4 Dominator is so efficient that it should be able to deliver about 850 MHS for Scrypt mining with 1020W of power usage. This was really impressive number and really caught our attention, especially considering that the first generation A2 Terminator miners were able to achieve just about 1/10 of that hashrate with the same power usage. A little bit later, in March this year, there was an update on the power usage and efficiency of the new A4 ASIC chips that has significantly lowered the initial numbers – down to 400 MHS from 850 MHS per kilowatt of power. Although the expected performance was lowered more than half it was still a pretty impressive number, but unfortunately this was not the final change and now we have a new number available. Apparently the final product will only be capable of about 260 MHs per 1 KW of power and be available for about $1800 USD without shipping and with power supply not included in the price. While the final performance per KW of power usage is not that bad either, we are not as excited as we were with the initial announcement or the March update. At 260 MHS per 1000 Watts things aren’t that bad, but with these specs we are not going to be pre-ordering one of these miners for sure. Maybe we are going to try to get one unit to test when they come out if it is not a pain in the ass to secure a single unit order.

If you are interested in the A4 Dominator ASICs group pre-order thread on Bitcointalk…

Possible Ethereum Hashrate for the New AMD Radeon RX 480

amd-radeon-rx-480-ethereum-hashrate

We have received a tip from a reader claiming he was able to run an Ethereum hashrate test on the upcoming AMD Radeon RX 480 GPUs providing us with a photo proof that we are publishing here. Do note that for the moment we cannot confirm this result for sure, but it does seems legit enough for us to consider it as a highly possible. Unfortunately the hashrate that is apparently achieved at stock frequencies is a bit disappointing at just around 24 MHS for Ethereum Dagger-Hashimoto mining with about 100W, we are also told that with a memory overclock 26-28 MHS are possible with about 120W of power usage. If these results turn out to be true the Radeon RX 480 would not be that great for mining Ethereum as we suspected recently. On the other hand the RX 470 could end up being a much more interesting choice for low power Ethereum mining if it manages to achieve the same hashrate, but at a better price when it hits the markets sometime next month. Guess we’ll have to wait a bit more to see confirmations if this is the actual hashrate for RX 480 mining Ethereum, but with the 256-bit memory bus these results unfortunately are on track with the pessimistic expectations we already had instead of the optimistic version…

X11 ASIC Miners Daily Profitability At the Moment

whattomine-x11-asics

It seems that there are already more than enough X11 ASIC miners available in order to essentially kill the profitability and make the purchase of a new X11 ASIC unprofitable on the long run. So what remains is the purchase of a small and affordable X11 ASIC miner for hobby miners that are not there just for the profit like most other miners are. Here is a quick check for the different X11 ASIC miners to see what daily profit you can expect via the What to Mine service. It seems that among the more established X11-based coins (they are not many and that is one of the problems for X11 ASICs) currently the most profitable one is Adzcoin (ADZ) followed by the leasing of your X11 hashrate at Nicehash and mining for DASH is a few steps below.

PinIdea DR-1 500 MHS X11 ASIC Miner:
– Adzcoin (ADZ) – $11.52 USD equivalent per Day
– Nicehash X11 – $7.05 USD equivalent per Day
– DASH – $6.39 USD equivalent per Day

iBeLink DM384M 384 MHS X11 ASIC Miner:
– Adzcoin (ADZ) – $8.84 USD equivalent per Day
– Nicehash X11 – $5.42 USD equivalent per Day
– DASH – $4.95 USD equivalent per Day

Baikalminer 150 MHS X11 ASIC Miner:
– Adzcoin (ADZ) – $3.42 USD equivalent per Day
– Nicehash X11 – $2.09 USD equivalent per Day
– DASH – $1.87 USD equivalent per Day

PinIdea DU-1 9 MHS X11 ASIC Miner:
– Adzcoin (ADZ) – $0.21 USD equivalent per Day
– Nicehash X11 – $0.13 USD equivalent per Day
– DASH – $0.11 USD equivalent per Day

The numbers above are based on the current exchange rate and do not include power costs for running the miner, so they are for the revenue you get from the miner, not the actual profit that remains when you deduct the power costs. As you can clearly see the X11 ASIC miners are already pretty expensive compared to what they are able to deliver in terms of daily earnings. If the situation remains like that you might be looking at something getting close to a year to get back your investment before starting to actually earn something on top, and things will most likely get even worse before (if) they start to get better. So if you already have an X11 ASIC miner you might want to either sell it or look for new coin launches that may temporary increase your mining profits. People that are not yet aware of the presence of X11 ASIC miners on the market that are rapidly increasing the hashrate should forget about mining X11 with their GPUs.

The latest r6 update might bring a slight performance increase in Lyra2REv2, however it significantly increases the performance of the Lyra2RE algorithm based on the few tests we ran, results of which you can find below comparing the r5 and r6 released on different Maxwell GPUs and the new Pascal GTX 1080.

ccMiner 1.7.6-r5 Nanashi Meiyo-Meijin:

Nvidia GTX 970
– Lyra2RE 1.65 MHS
– Lyra2REv2 21.49 MHS

Nvidia GTX 980 Ti
– Lyra2RE 2.43 MHS
– Lyra2REv2 31.38 MHS

Nvidia GTX 1080
– Lyra2RE 2.61 MHS
– Lyra2REv2 47.68 MHS

ccMiner 1.7.6-r6 Nanashi Meiyo-Meijin:

Nvidia GTX 970
– Lyra2RE 2.83 MHS
– Lyra2REv2 21.55 MHS

Nvidia GTX 980 Ti
– Lyra2RE 4.48 MHS
– Lyra2REv2 32.18 MHS

Nvidia GTX 1080
– Lyra2RE 6.54 MHS
– Lyra2REv2 48.31 MHS

You can download a 32-bit Windows binary of the ccMiner 1.7.6-r6 fork from Nanashi Meiyo-Meijin compiled with VS2013 and CUDA 8.0 with a wider range of Nvidia GPUs supported – from Compute 2.0 all the way up to Compute 5.2 (we have only tested it with Maxwell and Pascal GPUs though). You can follow the development of this fork on the official dev thread, though it is in Japanese and you may need to use an online translation service.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Overclocking and Mining Hashrate

gtx-1080-overclock-afterburner

Time for some overclocking of the GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition and running the tests again to see what hashrate increase can we expect from the GPU with the increased operating frequencies. The Founders Edition cards are somewhat limited in the max power you can get by the presence of only one 8-pin PCI-E power, default TDP limit of 180W and a Power Limiter that allows for just 20% increase over the default TDP (216W max TDP). We already know that the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 GPUs are handling quite well overclocking and you can squeeze a lot more from them if you are not limited and don’t care than much about the power usage. Unfortunately for some more serious overclocking you will have to wait for the GTX 1080 cards that come with custom cooling solutions form Nvidia’s partners that will allow for more serious overclocking. Meanwhile we are pushing the GTX 1080 Founders Edition to what it can do without touching the core voltage and doing some benchmarks with: Power Limit + 20%, Core Clock + 240 MHs, Memory Clock + 125 MHs, the max settings that are running stable for 24/7 mining on our test card and the results are below.

gtx-1080-stock-vs-oc-hashrate

As you can see from the table of hashrate results with the stock settings and the overclocked GTX 1080 the average performance increase we are getting is about 12%. A result that is not bad, but a more serious overclock can help us get even more hashrate from the GPU, unfortunately making it less attractive in terms of hashrate per watt. The problem with low performance for Neoscrypt and not that great for Lyra2RE still remain and unlike with Ethereum where we see some, though not enough, performance boost testing under Windows 10, with these two algorithms Windows 10 does not help, so they really need GPU specific optimizations to max out performance unlike the other algos that already scale pretty well on the GTX 1080. Other algorithms also do not show any significant difference in results between Windows 7 and Windows 10, so no need to upgrade or downgrade your OS. Of course for Ethereum mining on GTX 1080 or GTX 1070 you would still need to go for Linux for the best possible performance as still Windows hashrate is not satisfactory at all.

AMD Radeon RX 480 May Not be That Great for Mining

amd-radeon-rx-470

With less than two weeks left before the official launch date of the highly anticipated AMD Radeon RX 480 GPUs that are supposedly coming out on 29th of June with a recommended price tag of $199 USD people are getting anxious to get their hands on the hardware. The speculations are that the RX 480 will be doing great for mining Ethereum while also being quite power efficient and at the announced price it could be the killer ETH mining choice for multi-GPU mining rigs. So what could potentially make the Radeon RX 480 not so great choice for mining after all when the cards start hitting the market at the end of this month?

When AMD announced that the RX 480 will be priced at $199 USD everybody was surprised by the good news, yes, it is not top model GPU offering the highest performance on the market, but for the expected performance the price was great. Unfortunately with the upcoming release on the market we are hearing some not so good news that will make the RX 480 less attractive choice for mining and it is entirely related to the price point. It seems that the $199 USD price tag was indeed too good to be true, we are hearing from different sources that the actual end user prices will be more like 20-30% higher than that. Furthermore initially the availability of the new GPUs will most likely not be able to match the high demand that it is expected, so in the end it seems not very likely that will be able to get your hands on an RX 480 on 29th for $199 USD.

A few days ago AMD has also announced two lower-end Polaris-based models – the RX 470 and RX 460 GPUs that should be even more affordable and still manage to provide good performance (for gaming that is). What you should be more interested in however is the AMD Radeon RX 470 that is expected to be slightly cut down version of the RX 480 GPU, retaining the same PCB and 256-bit memory bus. So the chances that the RX 470 might be able to perform very similar in terms of performance for Ethereum mining like the RX 480 are pretty good and with the right price it might be even more attractive for crypto miners. However while AMD says that the RX 470 and RX 460 should be available at the same time the RX 480 launches, we expect that they will be a bit late with about a week or two on the market.

The focus of the RX 480 was mostly put on the Ethereum GPU mining, but we are still on the speculation phase and nobody knows for sure how much MHS the new GPUs will be able to provide. What you should also wonder however is how well these new video cards based on the 14nm AMD Polaris architecture will perform in other crypto currency algorithms and not just buy them because of possibly good Ethereum performance. With the recent issue with the DAO and the drop of ETH price this has become even more important and you should not forget that Ethereum will be mineable for probably up to a year more and then will be switching to PoS…

Breaking: “Pause Ether, DAO Trading”, Ethereum Founder Buterin Tells Exchanges

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has asked digital currency exchanges to “pause” ether and DAO activity following a hack of the DAO smart contract address. The DAO is currently being drained of ethers in a still-ongoing breach (at the time of publishing) to the unknown attacker’s ETH address. The ongoing hack and possible theft, deemed as […]

The DAO is Under Attack, Ethereum Price Suffering

the-dao-is

If you are wondering what is the reason for the sudden drop of the exchange rates of Ethereum all around, well it seems that the DAO has been attacked an somebody apparently found a way to steal a lot of ETH coins. There is still not a lot of official information regarding the issue, but until the situation is resolved and everything is clear you should be very careful trading DAO tokens and Ethereum Ether coins. It seems that the smart contracts are as smart as their authors and wherever there are a lot of money stored with automated control they always attract people willing to find a way to steal them, especially if they are not secured well enough. This could as well be the end of DAO if the situation is not taken care of good enough, but it will undoubtedly also hurt Ethereum. Hopefully things will soon clear out and we would be able to continue with the usual things like mining etc.

For more details about the current situation and how you might be able to help…

Ether Price Plumets; Ethereum DAO May Be Hacked

Ethereum took a drastic dive this morning as news came in that the DAO smart contract address is being drained of ether in an ongoing and developing news story. How to Cancel Unconfirmed Bitcoin Transactions

unconfirmed-bitcoin-transaction

With the recent spike in the price of Bitcoin the number of unconfirmed transactions has increased significantly yet again and the Bitcoin blocks are getting closer and closer to being full. This essentially slows down transactions on the network and in order to ensure that your transaction is being processed faster you need to increase the fee over the standard recommended one. While this may be just fine for larger BTC transfers with fewer inputs, if you want to make a small transaction of few Bitcoin cents or a large one with a lot of inputs the network fees can get quite high. If the fee is not large enough and the waiting list is big you can easily end up with your transaction not getting confirmed and included in a block for over a day and that usually causes a problem, especially if you are paying for something in BTC. The solution would be to just cancel any unconfirmed transaction that did not go through for over 24 hours and it is not that hard to do it actually, although the process itself may require some time.

bitcoin-qt-zapwallettxes

Cancelling stuck Bitcoin transaction sent from your local BTC wallet requires you to run the qt wallet client with a special option that would remove all pending transactions that are not included in the blockchain. You need to run bitcoin-qt.exe (or the respective qt executable file depending on the OS you are using) with the -zapwallettxes parameter, but before running it make sure you backup your wallet.dat file. This will take some time as it will initiate a blockchain rescan, so be prepared to wait until the process finishes and do not forget to remove the extra parameter the next time you run your wallet as it is not needed anymore. As a result you will be able to initiate a new transaction with the unspent coins and by increasing the network fee you pay you should be able to move them faster and have the transaction confirmed this time. You will be essentially double spending your Bitcoins, but the second transaction you initiate will cancel out the earlier one. You cannot successfully double spend Bitcoins unless you control more than half of the Bitcoin network, so no worries here. The only thing you will be able to do is free up your coins that were stuck in an unconfirmed transaction for a long time and then be able to initiate a new transaction to send them successfully this time.

Do note that although we are giving this example for Bitcoin, it should work on many other altcoins as well that are based on a more recent forked Bitcoin wallet code as the option we use here is not included in the earlier version of the Bitcoin client. There are some more complex alternatives for performing the same thing described here if your wallet does not support the zapwallettxes option, so you are not out of luck in such cases either. You can do the same thing with the Python-based tool called Pywallet as an alternative to using the qt wallet method described here.
