Coin Magi (XMG) Proof of Interest 2015 Campaign

coin-magi-xmg-proof-of-interest

The team behind Coin Magi (XMG) has announced an interesting initiative called Magi Proof of Interest 2015 that would allow people to get interest on their XMG coins kept in their wallets if they keep them there for 2 months. The Proof of Interest will last two months (starting April 1st and ending June 1st)and it is not implemented in the wallet itself, you need to send your XMG wallet address and the balance you have in the wallet will be entered in the PoI initiative and in 2 months if you still have the same amount of coins your interest will be paid on 01-06-2015, if you have more coins you will get higher interest and if you have less either no interest will be paid to you (if more than 20% less coins in your wallet) or an interest rate for the amount of coins present in your wallet.

In order to participate you need to either post your wallet address here or send in a PM with your address if you don’t want to make it public. The interest rate is not yet available, it can be influenced by the number of participants, level of the fund and total number of coins that participate. So if you have some XMG coins that you are keeping in your wallet long term, then there is absolutely no reason not to take advantage of this campaign. Do note however that exchanges or wallet address on an exchange are excluded from participation in this initiative!

Why Bitcoin Regulation Will Never Help Consumers

As I expressed in yesterday’s Part 1 of this article, called “Can Bitcoin Exchange Risk Lead to Bitcoin Regulation?“, Bitcoin is far from perfect, and the Bitcoin exchanges are a primary concern right now. Updated ccMiner 1.6-git fork by tpruvot with ZiftrCOIN Support

ccminer-1-6-git-zr5-tpruvot

We have compiled a new windows binary for the ccMiner 1.6-git fork by tpruvot (source) that now has support for ZiftrCOIN (ZRC) GPU mining with support for Compute 3.0 or later Nvidia-based video. Our windows binary is compiled with VS2013 and CUDA 6.5 and supports Compute 3.0, 3.5, 5.0 and 5.2 GPUs, you can download and try it below, there is an example BAT file setup for testing hashrate at the Suprnova ZR5 pool. Depending on the GPU you are using you may try to increase the intensity of the ccMiner to get some extra performance, try with 25-26 instead fo the default 20. We are getting up to about 3000 KHS on GeForce GTX 980. The GPU mining availability for ZiftrCOIN is going to make CPU mining the coin pointless, especially since it is now possible for both AMD and Nvidia GPUs, so you might want to switch to something else if you have idle CPU power for mining crypto currencies.

New sgminer 5.1.0 fork with ZiftrCOIN Support

sgminer-5-1-0-ziftrcoin

You can now mine ZiftrCOIN with AMD-based video cards thanks to a new fork of sgminer 5.1.0 that adds support for ZR5 (source) and we have compiled a windows binary that will allow you to try it out. The windows binary is compiled for Win32, so it should work on wider range of systems using 32-bit or 64-bit Windows. Do note that ZiftrCOIN GPU mining is still in early stage, so it might be a bit buggy initially and further optimizations in performance could be possible. The coins does seem to handle well high intensity like 18 or 20, you can lower the intensity value if it does not work for you with high setting. The GPU mining availability for ZiftrCOIN is going to make CPU mining the coin pointless, so you might want to switch to something else if you have idle CPU power for mining crypto currencies.

First Impressions from the Xapo Bitcoin Debit Card

xapo-bitcoin-debit-card

We’ve received our International Bitcoin Debit Card that is linked to the free Xapo online Bitcoin wallet and Vault and we were very eager to test it out. Earlier this month we’ve tried out the Xapo Online Bitcoin Wallet service and you can read our first impressions here, though the thing that we were most interested in was the ability to link your Bitcoin wallet to an International Debit Card and use the card as any normal debit card, but when you pay with it or withdraw money they are converted instantly from your Bitcoins in the wallet. Xapo has apparently partnered with My Choice as a physical card provider and the card we’ve got is not yet a Xapo branded one as apparently all of the earlier cards are, though in the future they should come as Xapo-branded International Bitcoin Debit Card and not as you see on the photo above a generic debit card with a VISA logo on it. The card we’ve got is with 3 years validity and comes with both magnetic stripe and a chip, but no contactless payment option is supported.

xapo-debit-card-order

Do note that Xapo is still in beta testing with their debit cards and have not yet launched the card publicly. You can currently pre-order your card and thus get in the list for an invitation to get it when it becomes officially available, though there may be some options to get is faster such as the one available for EU users if they purchase some BTCs from Xapo via a bank transfer. Once you receive your Bitcoin debit card you need to activate it first via a special website or by calling a dedicated phone number and also get your PIN code (can be done over the phone only!). This is done through the My Choice’s website, though once you activate the card it will be automatically linked to your Xapo wallet, so don’t worry when you see that you have 0 balance in your My Choice account. It is completely normal to see a zero balance in USD or EUR as you actually do not have anything inside the card, when there is a request for a transaction it automatically converts Bitcoins from your Xapo wallet to cover the needed amount. This happens instantly, so there are no additional delays or things that you need to do in order to use the card, you can use it as easy as like any other debit card. There is also no difference to the merchant you are paying when you use a normal debit card or the Xapo debit card linked to your online Bitcoin wallet as the merchant gets the requested amount in the local currency in both cases.

xapo-debit-card-fees

The Xapo Bitcoin Debit Cards are available in either USD, EUR or GBP currency (you can choose the currency when you fill the form for your card to be sent to you). Here ate the standard fees associated with the international debit card that you will get and that will be linked to your Xapo online Bitcoin wallet. Do note that while there is a monthly service fee included in the chart with the fees, this fee is going to be covered by Xapo, so for the end user there will be no such monthly fee included. Also note that currently Xapo is not charging the planned, one-time ordering fee of $15 USD for the card, while the card is in beta. In the future however this amount will be debited from your Xapo Wallet in Bitcoins when you request to get a debit card linked to your account. As you can see there is a 3% foreign currency conversion fee, so make sure you have the card set to use the main currency you will be using in order to avoid paying that extra fee unless you go abroad and want to pay with the card.

xapo-debit-card-limits

This table shows what are your Xapo Bitcoin debit card limits, by default once you get your card it will be with the Standard limits applied and these are a bit restricting for the total of both POS terminal purchases and ATM withdraws. After you get the card you can upgrade your status to increase limits, and to do so you need to contact Xapo. This is recommended mostly because it removes the relatively small total limits to the lifetime purchases and ATM withdraws you can do via the card. When you make a purchase or withdraw cash via the Xapo Bitcoin debit card you will immediately see the transaction in your online Bitcoin wallet at Xapo, but that transaction will pretty much list that a certain amount of BTC was sent from your wallet. In order to get extra transaction details about the merchant, how much you’ve paid in a local currency and in the card’s currency you would need to login to your My Choice account that you created when you activated your card.

So our first impressions from the International Debit Card provided by Xapo that is linked to your free online Bitcoin wallet at Xapo are very positive. The card is as easy to be used as any other debit or credit card as long as it is not empty in terms of balance, or in this case if you have some BTC in your wallet. Everything runs smooth and problem free when you pay on a POS terminal or withdraw cash from ATM, what you just need to make sure is that you are familiar with the limits and fees associated with the card to save yourself some possible issues in the future, so make sure you read them carefully. We are going to continue using our Bitcoin debit card for different payments to make sure that there will really be no problems doing various payments with it as we expect it to be. This card is really convenient thing to have in your wallet as it saves you the time and extra trouble of sending Bitcoins from your wallet to an exchange to convert them to USD, EUR or GBP for example and then withdraw them to your bank account that might be linked to a debit card that you can use.

Miner Control 1.6.4 Pack for AMD Radeon R9 280x

miner-control-164-kbomba-280x

We have not updated our Miner Control tool package for AMD Radeon R9 280x GPUs for a while, so it was time to release an updated package using the latest Miner Control v1.6.4 KBomba-Mod and the newest sgminer 5.1.1 along with update for the services and pools used (NiceHash, WestHash and YAAMP) as well as the supported algorithms – X11, X13, X14, X15, Lyra2RE, Keccak, NeoScrypt, WhirlpoolX and Qubit. Do note that the package also includes AMD OpenCL DLL files from older drivers, you may want to remove them to use the OpenCL from the driver you have currently installed or play with the OpenCL from a different version of AMD’s drivers.

To be ready to use the Radeon R9 280X package you just need to update the account settings for each pool to reflect your BTC payment address. Do note that the default configuration that we have set is mining from time to time for the author of the software (Miner Control) as a donation alternative, but you can change that setting should you wish to. Also note that the package contains some of Wolf0 optimized kernel binaries for higher performance in some of the X algorithms. The 280x package is intended for a single Radeon R9 280X card, though you could use it for others AMD GPUs as well or more cards – what you may need to reflect however in the config file is the total hashrate and power usage as well as maybe some of the startup settings for the different algorithms as the default ones are optimized for 280X.

How Intensity Affects Performance in ccMiner

ccminer-sp-mod-intensity

After a reader suggested that the difference in performance between different forks of ccMiner can be a direct result from the use of different default values for intensity we have decided to dig a bit into how the -i value affects hashrate. We have used ccMiner 1.4.2 SP-mod as an example along with WhirlpoolX on a GeForce GTX 980 GPU. The range of intensity that we have tested is between 10 and 26 with 26 being the default one for the ccMiner SP-mod. You can go with intensity of under 10, but the performance will drop further and there is actually no reason to do it, going over 26 is also possible but will hardly result in any performance increase. Going below Intensity value of 26 may be good thing to do if you are mining on your primary video card on a computer that you are using, so lowering the intensity can be useful in making things more responsive (even 1-2 steps can make a difference without much performance loss). You can see the results with different settings for intensity on our test setup below:

WhirlpoolX – GTX 980:

Intensity 10 – 4377 KHS

Intensity 11 – 8157 KHS

Intensity 12 – 17252 KHS

Intensity 13 – 34283 KHS

Intensity 14 – 67009 KHS

Intensity 15 – 99110 KHS

Intensity 16 – 107568 KHS

Intensity 17 – 140759 KHS

Intensity 18 – 175111 KHS

Intensity 19 – 199488 KHS

Intensity 20 – 214410 KHS

Intensity 21 – 222802 KHS

Intensity 22 – 225320 KHS

The Bean that Grew Two Stalks: the Story of BitBean

The alternative cryptocurrency world is one rife with pre-mine scams, predatory “initial coin offering” schemes and copy-paste experts masquerading as “developers.” Let’s be very clear: the ability to open up Qt and modify some forms and change a few values in existing source code is one I hope my son has by age six. The SFARDS SF3301 Dual-Algorithm ASICs Coming as Early as Next Month

sfards-logo

Last year Gridseed and WiiBox have officially merged to become known as SFARDS. And the new company has recently announced that they have taped out their 28nm SF3301 Dual-Algorithm ASIC chips that should be capable of mining both Bitcoin (SHA256) and Litecoin (scrypt) as the same time similar as an idea to what Gridseed offered in terms of mining hardware last year. By using FD-SOI technology the power efficiency when mining with SHA-256 is expected to reach below the 0.3 J/GH range, and 2.0 J/MH when mining with Scrypt according to SFARDS. The new company expects to have their first ASIC dual miners as early as April and hopefully we are going to get some more details about expected specifications very soon.

The big question that arises is what kind of performance have they managed to get out from their 28nm SF3301 ASIC chips for mining SHA-256 and Scrypt algorithms separately as well as when mining them together and of course what will be the price of the miners. People are hoping that the new miners could bring back the interest in Litecoin and bring up the exchange rate as it has been pretty low for quite a while, especially after the bad news from Zeus and Bitmain that canceled he development of their latest generation of Scrypt ASIC hardware that was initially expected to hit the market by the end of 2014.

Updated Windows Binary of sgminer 5.1.1 With Fixed Lyra2Re Support

sgminer-5-1-1-lyra2re

Earlier this month when sgminer has been updated to version 5.1.1 (source) it has turned out that there are some issues with the newly added Lyra2RE support. This issue has been addressed and now the latest sgminer 5.1.1 should have no more trouble mining Lyra2RE on compatible OpenCL GPUs, so you might want to give it a try, though it might not be the highest performing Lyra2RE miner out there. The idea of the official sgminer is that it combines almost all of the available algorithms in a single miner package and that is what makes it useful for GPU miners along with a functionality that should allow you to easily switch between them.

The Game SaruTobi Has Been Taken Down from the App Store

sarutobi-power-ups

It seems that the iOS game that rewards players with Bitcoin Tips, SaruTobi, has been taken down from Apple’s App Store temporary. The reason given according to the game’s developer is the fact that players may be confused that the Bitcoins they can buy in-game might be real Bitcoin and not in-game currency. This “problem” has been fixed already apparently and the updated version of the game is already awaiting approval according to a status update published on MandelDuck’s official Facebook page. If you have already downloaded and installed the game on your iPhone or iPad you can continue to play it without any problems and get Bitcoin Tips when you collect enough black Coins.

Here is a quote of the post from SaruTobi’s developer:

Apple removed the app from sale on the weekend over concerns users would be confused over the use of in game Bitcoins (not real) and actual real Bitcoin.

Mainly because there is an in app purchase that lets you buy the in game coins, Apple are concerned that users may think they are buying real Bitcoin, fair enough (even though it tells them they aren’t).

I have had to fix this issue and the updated app is currently waiting for review and should be live in the app store soon.

Fast Bitcoin Transactions with Smaller Fees

bitcoin-wallet-smaller-transaction-fee

By default the sending of Bitcoins from your wallet is set to use a minimum of 10000 satoshi as a transaction fee in order for your transfer to be processed faster, for bigger BTC transfers the fee also increases. The problem however comes when you want to send smaller amounts of coins such as a few hundreds of satoshi where a fee of 10K satoshi is significant. The latest Bitcoin Core wallet 0.10.0 comes with an advanced menu to control transaction fees and you can take advantage of that easy to use feature to send smaller BTC transactions with lower fees and still have them processed fast. You can of course try to send some coins without any fee, however that may result in very long time needed to confirm the transaction, so it is not recommended, especially if you are paying for something and want to receive the service or goods faster, so you might want to avoid doing that.

One of the ways to save about half of the standard fee and still have the transaction processed very quickly is to use 10000 fee per kilobyte of transaction data, so normally you would pay about half of that for small transactions. It may take just a bit more time to process these transaction than with the normal 1K fee, but they are processed very quickly as well. Alternatively you can go for the minimum possible fee of 1000 satoshi for a transaction, but that could be slow as well, though it is still better than not to pay a transaction fee at all.

The Miner Control tool, successor of NiceHash Control that has been developed by StuffOfInterest, is a useful piece of software for Windows users that want to make it simple and easy to mine the most profitable coin or rent their hashrate for the maximum profit without much effort other than setting thing up initially. The author of the original tool however hasn’t been working on it and adding new features for a while, not that the software is not useful enough as it is, but there are still some things that can be improved and added to make it even better. Thankfully the development has been picked up by Bombadil who has released his own improved version called KBomba-Mod (source) that adds some extra features and has further improved the tool. The best thing is that his modified version is fully compatible with the original config file, so you can just add the configuration that you are already using to the latest Miner Control v1.6.4 KBomba-Mod and it will work. Then you can start experimenting with his additions without having to waste any time to migrate to the new version.

Getting The Optimum Mining Performance on AMD GPUs

amd-opencl-dlls

If you are using AMD Radeon-based video cards for mining crypto currencies you have probably noticed that some algorithms have issues with various video driver versions or the performance you get may differ between older and newer version. Since the AMD miners use OpenCL there is an easy solution that can help you deal with driver version issues and to get the optimum hashrate for a specific algorithm. There is not need to reinstall the complete video driver, you can just copy the OpenCL DLLs from the respective driver version inside the same folder where the software miner is (cgminer or sgminer) and when you run the miner it will load the different OpenCL version, regardless of what video driver you have installed. Do note that you need to delete the compiled kernel BIN file for the respective algorithm or algorithms when replacing the OpenCL DDL files in order to get the kernel recompiled with the different version. You can download the different AMD Radeon drivers OpenCL version 13.12, 14.4, 14.6 RC2, 14.8, 14.9 and 14.12 in a single package from the link below and try out what performance you will get by replacing the DLL files inside the miner software’s folder.

The BTER Exchange to Resume Operations and Pay Back to Users

bter-crypto-exchange

The Bter crypto currency exchange that was recently hacked and over 7000 BTC were stolen has officially detailed their plans to return to full operation again and to pay back to users all of the coins that were stolen. Earlier this month the service has hinted that Bter is getting back to normal operation, but now they have resumed trading with improved security and a plan set in motion to gradually return the missing coins back to users.

Bter has revealed some interesting numbers:

Bter had been the largest altcoin trading platform in the world, with 230,000 registered accounts, including 130,000 Chinese users, daily PV closing to 4 million at its peak. As a once hottest altcoin exchange, Bter had successfully help with the exchange of 890,000 BTC and had a significant and sustainable profit model.

3D Hubs Starting to Accept Bitcoin Payments

3d-hubs-bitcoin-payment

3D Hubs, a community that connects people around the world with 3D printers and people that need something 3D printed, has just announced with a post on Twitter that it has partnered with BitPay to start accepting Bitcoin payments. Currently the service has over 13000 users with 3D printers from around the world registered and offering their services to print models for customers to pick up locally or get shipped to them. The customers that pay for the service of getting their 3D model printed will apparently now also be able to pay with Bitcoins.

3D printing and Bitcoin are new technologies that seem to be like a good match, we’ve already seen some companies selling 3D printers, parts and filament for them for Bitcoins. So the step that one of the largest 3D printer owner communities 3D Hubs has taken to integrate Bitcoin support is more than welcome by the people using the service, both as customers and as service providers.

New Windows Binary of sgminer 5.1.1 Master Branch

sgminer-5-1-1-official

There hasn’t been much happening at the official github repository of sgminer for some time (source), so we have not posted a new windows binary compiled from there recently. However they just added some new algorithms and have bumped the version number to 5.1.1, so we’ve had to compile a new binary to try out the new algorithms that were added. The latest sgminer 5.1.1 now does include support for Lyra2RE, Pluck and WhirlpoolX algorithms, so no need to use different forks of sgminer for each of these algorithms. And since these algorithms were added in the official sgminer we can now update our Miner Control package for AMD Radeon R9 280X GPUs that we haven’t updated for a while, so stay tuned for the update. Meanwhile you can download and try the new windows binary with the added support for the three new algorithms.

Updated Miner Control 1.6.1 Pack for Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti

miner-conrol-tool-updated

Time for an update to our Miner Control based package for GTX 750 Ti GPUs. We’ve included an up to date ccMiner fork 1.5.42-git windows binary from SP (compiled for Maxwell cards with Compute 5.0 and 5.2 only). The GTX 750 Ti package is configured to work with NiceHash, WestHash and Yaamp pools, supporting the more profitable X11, X13, X14, X15, Keccack, Lyra2RE and Quark algorithms. We have also added the WhirlpoolX algorithm as well as Qubit, though it still seems that mining Quark/Qubit is still the most profitable on Nvidia GPUs most of the time as compared to other popular algorithms.

You can download the package below with settings already set for non-overclocked GTX 750 Ti, if you are going to be using it on multiple card mining rigs you need to multiply the hashrate for the algorithms supported. The package will also function just fine on GTX 960, GTX 970 and GTX 980 cards where you would need to set the power usage and hashrate numbers for your respective hardware to get the correct calculations working. To be ready to use it you just need to update the account settings for each pool to reflect your BTC payment address. Do note that the default configuration that we have left is set to mine from time to time for the author of the software (Miner Control) as a donation alternative, but you can change that setting should you wish to.

Updated ccMiner forks With Support for WhirlpoolX Now Available

ccminer-sp-whirlpoolx

The WhirlpoolX algorithm is now supported in both the latest updates of the ccMiner forks from SP (source) and Tpruvot (source). So we have compiled windows binaries from the latest source for both miners and decided to test the performance we are getting mining the WhirlpoolX altcoin Vanillacoin (VNL). Do note that the sp-mod fork of ccMiner is optimized and supports the newer Computer 5.0 and 5.2 Nvidia Maxwell GPUs where the performance is maxed out while the tpruvot fork supports Compute 3.0 or newer video cards. We have tested the performance we are getting on GeForce GTX 980 GPU with the two miners, the SP version as expected gives out higher performance on a Maxwell card as expected with about 233 MHS while the tpruvot fork is not that much slower with about 222 MHS mining WhirlpoolX. So if you are mining WhirlpoolX on Nvidia-based video cards or leasing your hashrate you might want to update your miner to the appropriate version depending on your GPUs.
