Certain Things in Bitcoin Are Sacred

Lately there has been chatter that by raising the block limit, or discussing doing so, we are opening up the gates to later have a discussion about making other major changes to Bitcoin. It's even been suggested that by letting this block size limit raise go through, we are opening the door to the possibility of a coin limit raise. Which is just ridiculous on the face. Under no circumstances could such a change be made to Bitcoin. It would be the ultimate betrayal of even an average Bitcoin holder, who believes he is holding a limited supply asset. Such […]

5 Ways to Get Free Bitcoins

Do you wonder where you can get some free bitcoins? For many of us, the discovery of Bitcoin is like the discovery of organic foods. We can see the benefits of using them but find it difficult to justify the cost, and then there is the risk that we'll be getting a bad deal since we don't know what we're doing. In Bitcoin, it's like every organic food store has someone out front, offering free samples. Also, there's a library everywhere you look, but only a few of those libraries have any good information. The largest traders would benefit a […]

Bitcoin Processor Bitnet Finalizes Partnership with Computop

Readers may remember back in March when the Bitcoin payment processor, Bitnet, partnered with Cardinal Commerce to add Bitcoin payment as an option to hundreds of recognizable brands. Bitnet is a company that aims to do the same thing that some in the Bitcoin space are doing already, but better. Through creating partnerships with traditional merchant payment service providers, the company is trying to position itself in a way that it will be the default option for many who may not yet have considered plan B. By simply having to tick an option with their existing platform instead of adding […]

Buy Organic Food With Bitcoin At Yummy Yards

Adam Soltys runs Yummy Yards, which is an urban farm located in Vancouver and Richmond specializing in organic food. Yummy Yards grows a variety of organic produce and runs as a cooperative, with generations of growers passing it from one to the next. What does Soltys believe Bitcoin and cooperatives have in common? “They’re run voluntarily and democratically,” he told CCN. He gave himself a moniker once: “techno hippie.” When I asked him why, he didn’t hesitate to elucidate: “I chose techno hippy because I’m into environmentalism, yoga, eastern/newage spirituality, music festivals, psychedelic drugs, tuning in, dropping out, ecotopia and […]

Checking Out the Eobot Cloud Mining Service

eobot-cloud-mining-service

The Eobot cloud mining service has apparently been in operation since April 2013 and is based in California, USA and we’ve known about it for quite some time, but have not tried it up until recently. The service says that their “cloud mining should be considered as a fun, recreational activity and not a source of income or investment”, so it does make reasonable promises and does not try to make you believe you will ROI in no time. It has multiple options available, apart from standard cloud mining it also offers cloud folding services, the ability to rent hashrate and point it to your on pool, or mine with your hardware in their mining pools, they even offer their own software for mining. There is also a built in faucet with small daily payouts built-in that can help you get started even without investing your own money or coins in the service plus some awards to stimulate you to return often such as a daily DOGE reward just for logging in. You can choose to mine not only Bitcoin, or Litecoin, but also BlackCoin, Namecoin, Dogecoin, Dash, Reddcoin, BitShares, CureCoin, StorjcoinX, Monero, Counterparty, Stellar, Bytecoin, Peercoin, NXT or MaidSafeCoin. Though the additional coins are not mined directly, but probably your mined profit is exchanged for the crypto currency you choose.

eobot-earnings-panel

At the moment the service has almost 230 thousand users registered, but apparently not that much of them actually have purchased a lot of hashrate for clud mining. There are two options available in the form of 5 year contracts – GHS 1.0 sold at $0.20 USD per GHS with a maintenance fee of $0.00232/GHS/Day and GHS 2.0 available at a price of $0.50 USD with a lower maintanance fee of $0.00117/GHS/Day. The first option offers cheaper price for the hashrate, but the profitability is much lower with the maintenance fee resulting in about 95% of what you mine. The GHS 2.0 contracts on the other hand are pricier, but with lower maintenance fee (apparently using AntMiner S5 as mining hardware) that is currently about 49% of what you mine. The mining break even time in months at the moment is almost 50 months for the GHS 1.0 and about 12 months for the GHS 2.0 cloud mining contracts according to the service stats. At some point there were also scrypt cloud mining contracts being sold as well, but these are no longer available.

YOu can purchase cloud mining hahsrate or use the service as a form of crypto currency exchange, but you should be aware that when using crypto currencies to buy hashrate or to exchange between them there is a 5% fee charged. There si also support for purchasing hashrate via PayPal, but if you do so there is a rule that no withdraws can be made for 180 days after every PayPal purchase as apparently set as a precaution to avoid fraud, but not very convenient for honest miners. We have purchased about 100 GHS of GHS 2.0 Bitcoin cloud mining hashrate a few days ago to check out the service and so far everything seems to run smoothly and problem free. Interestingly enough with just about 100 GHS of hashrate the website ranks us in the top 150 users in terms of purchased hashrate from the 230K in total.

Everledger Uses Block Chain to Combat Insurance Fraud

One of the main drives, since Bitcoin began gaining popularity, were the other possible uses of the block chain technology that drives it. Some have found ways to build other data layers on top of the block chain while others have found it possible to use the block chain to secure copyright notices. Everledger has devised a way that insurance companies can utilize the block chain to ensure that the items they are insuring are what they are said to be. This is not entirely secure, in the sense that a dedicated scammer could find a way to modify the […]

Global Economic Outlook: Eurozone At The Edge

The Grexit drama plot developed a twist when the Greek government turned on its antagonists and declared "This. Is. Sparta!" over the weekend. The EU now stands to witness the first actual fracture at its periphery, and it no longer holds the whip. Strategic alliances with other non-EU countries in the region become a reality, and the dwindling liquidity the ECB has been so desperate to protect, for the first time, makes a vortex near the open plug hole. In the below documentary, IamSatoshi Films explores the roots of Bitcoin. The film explores the aspect of Bitcoin that is often overlooked, how the political unrest of the early 2010s may have contributed to Bitcoin's success, as people were dissatisfied with the bailouts given to bankers earlier on. The allure of being one's own bank and having control of one's funds in the extreme would clearly attract those who were upset at the present system. Updated Miner Control Tool Packages for AMD and Nvidia

miner-control-tool-package-update

Time for another update of the complete packages based on the Miner Control tool for Nvidia GeForce GT 750 Ti and AMD Radon R9 280x GPUs due to hte latest developments in the mining world. The latest versions you can download from the links below include some updates and it removes the YAAMP pool support as it has become a part of NiceHash and currently redirects to their stratum servers. The latest updates also includes the most recent versions of SP-MOD’s ccMiner for Nvidia Maxwell as well as the sgminer fork with increased performance for Quark and Qubit with pre-compiled Binary Kernels for 280X. The two Miner Control tool packages are based on the latest fork of Miner Control from KBomba version 1.6.4.

To be ready to use the packages you just need to update the account settings for each pool to reflect your BTC payment address. Do note that the default configuration that we have set is mining from time to time for the author of the software (Miner Control) as a donation alternative, but you can change that setting should you wish to. The packages are ready to be used with either AMD Radeon R9 280X or Nvidia Geforce GTX 750 Ti cards, but you can also us the Nvidia package for other GPUs or more cards – what you may need to reflect however in the config file is the total hashrate and power usage. Since the AMD packages contains not only specific settings for AMD Radeon R9 280X, but also pre-compiled binary kernels specifically for that particular card if using it with other GPUs you will actually be getting lower hashrate, though n problem to use it with multiple 280X cards.

He's also held the leading position at the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX). De Soto is currently the president of Institute for Liberty and Democracy, a rather influential thinktank based in Peru. In both cases, BitFury seems to be aiming to add some of that hard-won knowledge one can only find in […]

Hostile Takeover? A Coup d'é·tat In BitShares Leads To BitShares 2.0

A shadowy figure - either an individual, but most likely numerous individuals - has apparently taken over enough shares in BitShares, the Bitcoin 2.0 technology, to considerably steer the project. So much so, in fact, that, in response, a BitShares 2.0 project has been launched this month.  Inner turmoil has seemingly undermined the expansion of the BitShares project, which has suffered the negative effects of not only a dilution of BitSharesX (BTSX), but also the negative impacts of publicized inner-strife, beginning with the evidence that the original BitShares white paper is no longer online. As natter in Bitcoin and BitShares forums […]

FATCA One Year On: 48% of Americans Abroad Want a President Who Would Repeal It

As America’s highly controversial global tax law reaches its first birthday, almost half of Americans who live overseas would support a presidential candidate who vowed to move to repeal it, reveals a new survey by one of the world’s largest independent financial advisory organizations. In a global poll, deVere Group recently asked more than 370 of its American expatriate clients: Would you vote for a presidential candidate that opposed FATCA (the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) and pledged to seek its repeal? 48 per cent said ‘yes’, 29 responded ‘no’, and 23 per cent ‘didn’t know.’ There are a reported […]

Zeushash with New Cloud Mining Contracts

zeushash-new-vghs-contracts

We haven’t written anything about ZeusHash for quite a while, since their partnership with Halley China, a large scale mining operator among the top in China. Well, today they have made an interesting announcement that made us take another look at their new offering as it sounds quite interesting and promising. It is a new cloud mining contract for a limited period that has no maintenance fees and at the end of the contract’s period you get your investment returned to you plus you keep what has been mined. The new cloud mining contract is called VGHS as Batch I VGHS hashrate is being sold for a period of 30 days at a price of $2.999 USD per VGHS. The price per GHS is a bit high for a 30 day period, even with maintenance fees included, but considering that after a month you will get back what you have paid for the hashrate plus what you have mined for that period of time it may not be a bad deal at all.

So what is the catch here? Well, the new VGHS cloud mining contracts from ZeusHash do seem more like an investment plan or a loan that users can give to the company and get the mined coins as an interest (currently it means you get about 3% interest for one month). This way the company has 30 days to operate with the money invested by the users before returning them back. It seems that lately this kind of offers are more beneficial for both users and mining operations as they offer more security and less risk than traditional cloud mining deals. So will this bring ZeusHash back in the game or not, it depends on how they manage to work things out with their new offer, but it does seem like an interesting alternative to other offers already. For the ones that are more interested in the traditional plans for Bitcoin cloud mining, there is a one week promotion starting today with a 10% PRICE CUT for Halley GHS that are still being offered.

The Mining Pool YAAMP Has Apparently Been Purchased by NiceHash

yaamp-purchased-by-nicehash

After having trouble for quite some time, often being offline due to attacks and various other issues and even announcing that it will be shut down permamently it seems that the mining pool Yaamp has found a solution. If you try to open the official website of the pool you will notice a message saying that it has been purchased by NiceHash and the mining has been redirected to the stratum servers of the new owner. There is also a recommendation to switch to the NiceHash mining pools as after 2015-07-31 Yaamp will stop their stratum servers that are currently just redirecting to NiceHash. So if you are still mining at Yaamp you might want to consider moving either directly to NiceHash/WestHash or another mining pool.

Bitcoin XT Block Size Increase: What is Proposed and How Will it Affect the Bitcoin Price?

From a fundamental analysis perspective the attributes of cryptographically secured value tokens, mathematical consensus and censorship resistance are what gives Bitcoin its value. With a high degree of decentralization, these attributes become more meaningful and Bitcoin more valuable. In the face of centralization they become meaningless and Bitcoin loses its value, both perceived and real. Yet, no matter how valuable, if the network is not highly available or does not function reliably, the utility of Bitcoin diminishes and as usage decreases so does value. xbt.social presents an assessment of the objective conditions surrounding Bitcoin's blocksize and how capacity scaling and […]

SFARDS SF100 – The first 28nm Dual-Mode Miner is Getting in Mass Production

sfards-sf100-miner

SFARDS Technology has successfully developed and produced the first FD-SOI 28nm SHA-256 (Bitcoin) and Scrypt (Litecoin) dual-mode mining chip SF3301, as we have previously reported. After more than one month evaluating, prototyping, and extreme-condition pressure testing, the first 28nm dual-mode miner, SFARDS SF100 is about to start mass production.

SF100 dual-mode miner has 24 SF3301 chips that support the following modes:
1. Dual mining mode, Bitcoin hashing power 1700 GHS + Litecoin hashing power 47 MHS, the power consumption at wall of whole miner is 960W.
2. Bitcoin single mining mode: Hashing power 1700 GHS, power consumption 770W.
3. Litecoin single mining mode: Hashing power 47 MHS, power consumption 180W.

With 0.45W/GHS + 3.8W/MHS, the power efficiency of SF100 is showing really good potential. It is also possible to overclock to certain extent (Sha-256: 2 THS, Scrypt: 55 MHS). Based on recent Bitcoin and Litecoin price, a dual-mode SF100’s revenue is similat to that of a to a 2.8-3.2 THS pure Bitcoin miner, which makes it equivalent to 0.3-0.34W/GHS power efficiency when it is dual mining. Taking June 19th price for instance, one SF100 generates 4.2 USD from Bitcoin and 3.8 USD from Litecoin, or a total 8 USD per day (without the costs for electricity deducted).

SFARDS Technology will start selling the SF100 dual-miner to public in July, though there is still no official end-user price announced and the first batch quantity is limited. The SF3301 dual-miner ASIC chips will be available for sale on August to people interested in using them in their own miner designs, again no pricing has been announced yet.

Is Somebody Stress Testing the Bitcoin Network

blockchain-unconfirmed-transactions

At the moment it seems as if somebody is deliberately stress testing the Bitoin network by sending more and more transactions, so the queue of unconfirmed transactions is currently at over 6000 and continue to increase. With so many unconfirmed transactions waiting to be included in a block this brings the debate around the current limit of 1 MB block size and if this limit should be increased. It could be like somebody is intentionally testing how will the network handle the extra load in its current state causing the presence of so many unconfirmed transactions waiting in the queue. Or maybe, though not very likely, the Bitcoin network is currently overwhelmed with too many real users moving Bitcoins around causing a big queue and having people wait more for their transactions to be confirmed.

To check the number of currently waiting unconfirmed transactions on the BlockChain…

DEA Seizes Innocent College Student's Money in Policing for Money

While noticeably egregious, The Institute For Justice demonstrates that Clarke's case doesn't scratch the surface of what's being called "policing for profit". BitLicense Driving Away Small Bitcoin Businesses from NY

eobot-cloud-mining-service

It seems that New York’s BitLicense regulations that recently have been finalized are already “encouraging” smaller Bitcoin businesses to either move away or stop working with users from new York. Just a few days ago we’ve had an announcement that the BTC Guild pool is closing down on June 30th citing the BitLicense regulations as one of the reasons for that decision. It seems however that the Bitcoin mining pool is not the only Bitcoin business that is taking into account these regulations as the Eobot Cloud Mining Service has also apparently taken the regulations seriously and has announced that it will stop working with users from the State of New York. Below is a quote of the official announcement:

Eobot will cease operations in the State of New York as of July 1, 2015.

To All Customers: If you are residing in and/or accessing Eobot within the State of New York, US, please withdraw all coins and cease all mining with Eobot as of July 1, 2015, as we are ceasing all Eobot mining connections from within New York at that time.

We regret that we must cease Eobot business within New York State, however the new BitLicense requirements in this state place compliance and cost burdens upon Eobot that we believe are excessive.

The Eobot Bitcoin Cloud Mining Service has been available for quite some time, probably among the oldest ones that are still operating. However we have not used it as some of its offers are not among the most profitable ones and have always seemed bit strange to us, but apparently it has large user base according to their statistics (over 224 thousand users). The service also has some sort of a downloadable miner, along with minerd and cgminer, but if you already have some mining hardware there are probably better and more profitable ways to utilize it. Still the service might be worth checking out, so we are going to.

Back on the BitLicense regulations, it seems that instead of helping Bitcoin-related businesses they will end up causing trouble for some smaller businesses that can prefer to stop operating in NY. Another, even worse outcome, could be for smaller businesses to go “in the dark” in order to avoid complying with the required regulations and continue to operate in NY without complying with the BitLicense. It will be interesting to see what will be the reaction of larger Bitcoin businesses to the BitLicense regulations, but we expect that some of these will also decide to stop operating in the State of New York…

Alex Batlin, who has been a vocal supporter of banks adopting Bitcoin related technologies, told attendees of the IDX Derivatives Expo in London that blockchain technologies will change banking.  “Blockchain technologies can make banks more efficient – for example through instantaneous settlement rather than the days it takes at present, lower costs and lower operational risk,” according to Alex Batlin, chief technology officer for innovation at UBS. The simple lesson for banks is that if we don’t do it […]

Grexit: Markets will respond "Not with a Bang but a Whimper"

Greece is on the verge of leaving the Euro. Whilst Eurozone capital markets are likely to deliver an initially muted response, we will see a long-term re-valuation of the price of peripheral Eurozone bonds and stock markets as investors price in the risk that other countries may, in time, follow Greece. The comments from Tom Elliott, International Investment Strategist at deVere Group, one of the world’s largest independent financial advisory organizations, come as the Greek debt crisis is reaching a climax following Thursday’s failed crunch talks with the Eurogroup finance ministers. It is becoming increasingly clear that the Greek saga […]

Jon Matonis Believes Increased Bitcoin Block Size Will Lead to Increased Mining Reward

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but sometimes people say things that just don't make sense. Jon Matonis had such a moment this morning on Twitter. Here he goes, before much more is written here: This might be how we know that the block size debate is getting out of control when people have the opportunity to make such presumptuous statements as that. At no time has any prominent proponent of increasing the block size spoken of increasing the block reward or removing the 21 million coin limit. Bitcoin Core development is not a central bank, and, as at least […]

Specifications of the New AMD Radeon 300 Series GPUs

amd-radeon-300-series-specifications

Here are the official specifications of the new AMD Radeon 300 Series GPUs that should start appearing on the market any moment now, as expected they are essentially re-branded 200 Series GPUs. The more disappointing thing however is that specification wise and even price wise they are the same as their 200 Series counterparts, aside from a bit higher clocks maybe and possibly a bit lower power usage achieved with some optimizations of the manufacturing process. The new 300 Series GPUs come with the same amount of Stream Processors, the same number of TMUs and ROPs, even with the same memory bus width… so essentially we are getting pretty much the same thing, but with a new name and as a new product. So the AMD Radeon R9 390X is essentially an 8 GB version of AMD Radeon R9 290X, the AMD Radeon R9 390 is AMD Radeon R9 290 with 8GB VRAM, the AMD Radeon R9 380 is essentially an AMD Radeon R9 285, the AMD Radeon R7 370 is AMD Radeon R7 265 and the AMD Radeon R7 360 is essentially an AMD Radeon R7 260. Disappointing? Well we are, because we expected to actually see some more improvements that could actually lead to increase in performance, other than what you can do by overclocking the older GPUs yourself. So do not expect to get much different hashrate from these “new” AMD Radeon 300 Series GPUs for crypto mining…

amd-radeon-r-fury-x

Then comes the AMD Radeon R9 Fury X, based on the new Fiji GPU with HBM Technology – the only actually new GPU coming from AMD this time. With it we are getting a new smaller, but powerful video card with 4096 Stream Processors and efficient and silent water cooling. What we expect from this new GPU from AMD is to offer crypto currency mining performance that is very close to that of the recently introduced Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti, and the price also seems to be the same. However the integrated water cooling of the AMD Fury X cards that is more silent and more effective than traditional air cooling solutions is making it the ore attractive choice for GPU mining needs. Of course we need to see how the new GPU will actually perform, but as we’ve already said our expectations are for very similar performance to that of the GTX 980 Ti. So if you are looking for new high-end GPUs from AMD to use for building GPU-based crypto currency mining rigs, than the Fury X could be a good choice, unlike the “new” 300 Series that are actually nothing new.

Bitcoin Dictators Inflate Block Size Debate

The motion in Bitcoin's Ocean - size does matter. Ex-Bitcoin Foundation developer Gavin Andresen and Bitcoinj Author Mike Hearn, think Bitcoin needs a benevolent dictator to affect change. Maybe they need a reminder that Bitcoin's purpose is to replace monetary dictators with Computer Science. Dictators, no matter how benevolent, are the ultimate act of centralization. Nobody Puts Bitcoin in the Corner The block size debate is a Computer Science and Economics debate. Its resolution should be subject to market forces. In this instance, those "Market Forces' are us. Which leads to the question - If the ultimate outcome for Bitcoin […]

Bitcoin Rising: Will it Take More than Movies and Crises?

It is commonly said that the Cypriot financial crisis of 2013, in which the Central Bank literally emptied the bank accounts of everyday people, is responsible for the first serious rise in the price of Bitcoin. JoyStream Combines P2P File Sharing and Bitcoin

The video above shows a proof of concept demonstration of the soon to be released JoyStream BitTorrent client, a interesting approach for combining P2P file sharing using Torrent files with Bitcoin payments for both people sharing files and people downloading files. And while it all seems promising, the concept still needs to be be packaged in a complete ecosystem where the needed content will be provided and paid for by users needing it. So far it all seems like a good and apparently working implementation on the software side for the actual P2P file sharing and Bitcoin integration in the process. Still the project is worth keeping an eye on as it soon promises to have an alpha release to be tested on the BitCoin testnet and you can sing up for an early access if you are interested.

Bitcoin and Litecoin Prices Going Up

bitcoin-price-spike

After quite some time with pretty stable, but low prices the exchange rate of BTC and LTC seems to be climbing up to more attractive levels for both miners and traders. Bitcoin has stabilized at the $250 USD level and Litecoin has reached the $3 USD level, but aside from the question what has caused the resent spikes in price there is another important question – will the prices get back to their previous levels, stabilize at their new levels or continue to rise. This is actually the hard part to predict, but the good thing is that there is finally some action going on on the market and better prices can also help the bit stagnant home mining segment… that is if they keep at a high level or continue to rise. This is especially important for small scale mining operations that are having hard time remaining profitable and with a ROI time in foreseeable future. So let us see what is going to happen in the following few days…
