A Quick Guide on How to Mine Steem on Windows

steem-website

Steem is a blockchain-based social media platform where anyone can earn rewards by contributing quality content and rating content published by others. You can also mine it using a dedicated CPU miner if you have some spare power that you want to dedicate to supporting the network. The information regarding Steem is still highly fragmented and you need to spend quite a lot of time figuring things out even though they do not seem to be that complicated. We have spent some time trying to get things working and we have managed to successfully start mining Steem, so we have prepared a short guide to help you get started mining on Windows.

The first thing you need to start with before moving with the actual mining is to register yourself an account on the steemit website. Do note that registering currently requires you to either have a Facebook or Reddit account to use as a means of verification for your registration. After you register you can also earn Steem by posting quality articles on the website and interacting in the community in general and then you can also start mining using the guide below.

steemd-first-run

– Start by downloading the latest Steem Windows Wallet and Miner for Windows

– The miner binary is compiled for 64-bit Windows, so it will not work on 32-bit ones

– Extract the steem-win-x64-012-2.zip archive to a folder on your computer and run steemd.exe

– The first time you run the Steem Daemon executable it will create a witness_node_data_dir directory and inside will generate some additional files and folders

steem-config-ini

– Go inside the witness_node_data_dir folder and open the config.ini file with Notepad or another text editor

– Start by adding a few steem nodes to connect to, just paste the following list under P2P nodes to connect to on startup:

seed-node = 52.38.66.234:2001
seed-node = 52.37.169.52:2001
seed-node = 52.26.78.244:2001
seed-node = 192.99.4.226:2001
seed-node = 46.252.27.1:1337
seed-node = 81.89.101.133:2001
seed-node = 52.4.250.181:39705
seed-node = steemd.pharesim.me:2001
seed-node = seed.steemed.net:2001
seed-node = steem.clawmap.com:2001
seed-node = seed.steemwitness.com:2001
seed-node = steem-seed1.abit-more.com:2001

– Under the name of witness add your steemit.com username (you need to register prior to start mining), so make sure it is something like: witness = "myusername"

– Under the name of miner and its private key add your steemit.com username and private key, so make sure it is something like: miner = ["myusername","yourWIFprivatekeyhere"]

– If you are not sure where to get the private key, then just login to your steemit.com account, go to your Profile and then to the Permissions tab. Here you need to click on Show the private key for Active (you may need to relogin first). Do note that the key shown by default is the public key, you need to show the private key and use the private key in the config! Alternatively you can use the Owner private key, this is also your login password, but due to security reasons you better stick with the Active key.

– Under the Number of threads to use add mining-threads = 1 or higher number, depending on how much of your CPU you want to utilize for mining, more threads result in higher hashrate

steem-cpu-mining

– You are now ready to start mining, just run steemd.exe again and wait for the blockchain to synchronize, it could take something like 15-30 minutes or more (depending on your internet connection)

– The steem blockchain is over 3.5 million block already, but the size is not that huge yet, it is around 3.3 GB in size, so you will need more than that free space available

– In our tests with an Intel Core i7 5820K CPU (6 cores, 12 threads) running at 12 threads configured in the ini file we are getting about 44390 HPS (hashes per second) as a hashrate or around 31-33 KHS with just 6 active threads

– Do note that the mining apparently requires a lot of RAM, we get about 3GB used for 6 threads and about 5GB used for 12 threads for mining, so make sure you have enough RAM in your computer (8GB or more is recommended)

– All you have to do now is to wait for your miner to first find a POW block and then put you in the Miner-witness queue until your turn comes in to confirm a block in order to get your reward transferred to your steemit.com account

For additional information about Steem you can visit the official website…

Ethereum’s Blockchain Data Getting Close to 30GB

The people that prefer to have full control over their Ethereum (ETH) addresses by running a local node with a full copy of the Ethereum blockchain could soon start having free space issues as the storage requirements continue to grow at a rapid rate. The Ethereum blockchain data is already getting close to 30GB in size and thanks to the Ethereum Classic (ETC) you may need to make a copy, so another 30GB of data for the ETC local wallet and blockchain. It may not be that big of an issue if you keep a single large blockchain on your computer, but people that use local crypto currency wallets usually have multiple of these and with the already huge Bitcoin (BTC) data getting close to 85GB in size as well as a few other more established older altcoins the free space required on your hard drive or let alone SSD if you use one can be over in no time…

Ethereum Classic (ETC) is the Opposition to Ethereum’s Hard Fork

ethereum-classic-logo

Ehereum (ETH) has successfully hard forked a few days ago and moved on a new chain, however this also brought to life Ethereum Classic (ETC) that continue to run on the old blockchain without any modifications that were made by the forking Ehereum (ETH). Initially the support for Ethereum Classic was a bit questionable, but after Poloniex – the current largest Ethereum (ETH) exchange added a market for trading ETC as well things started turning. There are already a few exchanges trading ETC with more probably soon to follow, multiple services such as block explorers and quite a few mining pools already available. The current value of 1 ETC is about 1/20th that of 1 ETH, but the daily volume traded on Poloniex shows that the Ethereum Classic has almost half the volume of Ethereum.

The most important question that people probably have at the moment is how they can get a hold of their ETC coins based on the ETH they are holding. There are some good and some bad news here, if you were running a local wallet then the ETH coins you had in it prior the hard fork will also give you the ability to have the same amount of ETC coins. What you will have to do is to run a copy of the blockchain prior the hard fork at block 1920000 and run a pre-hardfork client such as geth earlier than version 1.4.10. Of course for the ETH coins you would still need to run the original blockchain with a client supporting the hardfork (make sure you use different directories for storing the two chains). If you had all of your ETH coins in an exchange or an online wallet, then you might be out of luck unless that wallet or exchange provides support for ETC as well. In the case of Poloniex any ETH that you help in the exchange resulted in you getting the same amount of ETC, however still only a few exchanges do provide support for ETC.

At this point it is quite hard to say what is the actual amount of ETC coins that can be operated by their owners and unfortunately there is the chance that some exchanges that do not officially add support for ETC can still get a hold of the ETC coins that were available as ETH balances prior to the hard fork. So at the moment it is still hard to predict what exactly will happen with Ethereum Classic, all we can say is that we are seeing peak in user interest and support, but will that be enough to establish ETC as a long term alternative to ETH or not is still hard to say. So you might want to keep an eye out for ETC and if you can get a hold of your Ethereum Classic coins you should do so just in case. As for those of you that may decide to mine ETC (it is on a separate chain after the hard fork) you should know that there is still a quite a bit of risk involved and ETC future is still a bit uncertain. We are going to be keeping a track of how things with Ethereum Classic progress further on and keep you updated on how the situation evolves.

For more information about the Ethereum Classic (ETC) alternative visit the official website…

How to Maintain and Repair Dual-X and Other Non-Serviceable GPU Fans

sapphire-280x-dual-x

There are a lot of people that use various GPUs for mining with the stock fans that the video card comes with and normally many of these fans start to have issues in just a couple of months or after a year or so. The time frame usually depends on how clean is the environment that the mining rigs are at and how well maintained are the rigs themselves. Sooner or later it is inevitable for the fans to start behaving worse than they were initially, because of the dirt they accumulate that slowly eats away the brass or bronze bushings of the non-serviceable cheap fans that most video cards use. By non-serviceable fans we mean these where you have no access to the mechanical parts of the fan when you remove the sticker of the fan. One of the most famous and widely used such fans are the ones used on Sapphire Dual-X cards, but there are others such as Gigabyte’s Windforce and so on.

The good thing is that these cheaper fans can actually be kept in good shape as well if you know how properly disassemble them to clean them on a more regular basis. Even if you have missed the point where the fans could be kept in top shape by cleaning them regularly and have instead started breaking down, there is still a chance that you can bring them back to life as long as they have not stopped completely rotating. We have prepared a guide on how you can completely disassemble a non-serviceable fan from a Sapphire 280X, clean it up and assemble it or repair it with the help of some new bearings that you are going to be using to repair the fan making it like new. Although this guide is specifically for Sapphire’s Dual-X fans, it should be pretty much the same for many other similar fans. For comparison the turbine type coolers used on most cards, although noisier, are much higher grade and more expensive fans that can last much much longer without any attention from the user.

dual-x-fans-repair-1

Depending on if you just want to clean the fans or to repair them and make them more durable you may need a different set of tools. For the first you can go with just a spray can with cleaning fluid, but for proper repair and upgrade a few more tools will be required. You will need a spray with cleaning fluid to make cleaning easier, we are using TRW brake cleaner, but anything else that is not too aggressive to plastics should be fine. You can also use alcohol-based cleaner that is not under pressure to clean the parts of the fan as well, so pretty much anything will do here. You will also need a philips and a flat screwdriver, some cyanoacrylate adhesive, a small wood screw (or a larger one for plastics) and a pair of bearings with size 2x5x2.5mm in size (this is the correct size for Dual-X fans, some other fans may require different size of bearings). This is all you will need to prepare along with some patience and a few spare fans that you may initially break until you get the hang of things if you are not careful enough.

dual-x-fans-repair-2

You need to detach the fans from the faceplate holding them, usually they are held by three screws each and then comes the first step in disassembling the non-serviceable fans. You need to carefully remove the top rotating part of the fan with the blades. The top part of the fan contains not only the blades, but it is also essentially the rotor part of the brushless motor while the lower part contains the stator of the brushless motor that rotates the fan. You need to separate the two parts carefully by using three or four of your fingers to push in between the two parts (some fans come of easily than others). The important thing here is not to pull the blades of the fan and they can easily break, you just need to apply enough force with your fingers in between the two parts of the fan and you will get the desired result of the two parts separating. Gigabyte’s Windforce fans for example do require more force to come off as apparently they have a stronger plastic locking ring.

dual-x-fans-repair-3

Here are the two parts of the fan disassembled, this is essentially half of the hard part already done. At this point you can just use some cleaning spray to clean up the two parts of the fan, apply some grease on the steel shaft and reassemble the fans. This would be enough to extend the lifetime of the fan significantly if you do this maintenance once every few months of operation. You just need to make sure you use a pressurized cleaning fluid that will take out all of the dirt away from the lower part of the fan as it is harder to clean than the upper part. If you are doing only the cleaning part you can just push the two parts back together and everything should be fine for a couple of more months when it would be a good idea to repeat the cleaning process again.

dual-x-fans-repair-4

For the people that want to repair and upgrade their fans with dual ball bearings thus extending their lifecycle significantly you will need to continue with the disassembling part. You need to use the flat screwdriver or a flat tool that you need to insert between two of the poles of the stator and gently apply pressure. Do not push too hard, if you do not feel the stator with the PCB below moving a bit, then just move to the next pole and apply some more pressure. This is needed, because the PCB with the electronics and the stator of the motor that is on top is glued to the plastic bottom part of the fan and you need to break the glue. Be very careful not to press on the thing copper wire sued for the windings as this may damage the motor, also too much pressure may break the stator away from the PCB, so you need to be extra careful here. There is just a drop of glue, so once you feel the part rotate a bit you should be able to separate the PCB with the electronics from the plastics pretty easy.

dual-x-fans-repair-5
dual-x-fans-repair-6

Here are the parts separated. As you can see the bottom plastic part contains the metal bushing (sleeve bearing fans) and on top of it is the plastic holder ring that locks into place the top part of the fan. The PCB and the stator of the motor show traces of some grease and dust accumulated on it. You need to remove the plastic holder ring and be careful not to loose it and under it is the metal bushing that you need to pull out and replace with the two bearings turning your cheaper sleeve bearing fan into the usually more expensive dual ball bearing fan that provides longer lifespan and reliability. As you can see when you remove the plastic holder ring there is a lot of dirt inside, this is the thing that essentially kills the fan because it eats away the bushing unevenly and destabilizes the rotating part of the fan.

dual-x-fans-repair-7
dual-x-fans-repair-8

You need to turn the screw inside the metal bushing with the help of a screwdriver, again be careful here, because as soon as you feel that the screw is not rotating, but instead the whole bushing is you will need to pull out the screw with the bushing attached to it. Be careful after removing the metal bushing, because under it should be a small black disc that is easy to get lost and you will need to put it back in when you clean everything up.

dual-x-fans-repair-9

Clean everything well from the dust and dirt and make sure not to loose any of the small parts and then you will be ready to start assembling back things. The difference is that instead of returning the metal bushing back you will be inserting the ball bearings inside the plastic bottom of the fan.

dual-x-fans-repair-10
dual-x-fans-repair-11

Start by placing the small black disc inside the bottom plastic part, make sure it is seated well on the bottom before you start inserting the ball bearings. The two 2x5x2.5mm ball bearings should fit tight inside where the original metal bushing was, just push them carefully to get inside and place the plastic ring holder on top.

dual-x-fans-repair-12
dual-x-fans-repair-13

Apply a small drop of cyanoacrylate adhesive on the spot where the original glue was placed and quickly place the PCB with the electronics and the stator of the motor back on top of the plastic lower part. You can use the fan cables as a guiding point in order to properly orient the two parts, so that there will be no issues gluing them together properly. What you should be extra careful about while gluing the two parts is not to rotate the bottom too much as the white plastic ring can move around and while pressing the two parts together. Make sure it stays on its original position centered above the bearings as otherwise you may have to remove the two parts and try to glue them again after reseating the plastic ring.

dual-x-fans-repair-14

Wait a couple of minutes for the glue to cure and you are ready to assemble back the two parts of the fan together. Just hold them parallel o each other and gently press them until you hear a click sound. This would mean that the plastic holder ring has moved to its place and has locked onto the steel shaft of the rotor (the top part of the fan). After that you can reassemble the fan on the video card and connect it to the power in order to test that everything is working properly and it should. As a result of replacing the stock metal bushing with two ball bearings you should have the fans rotating just like brand new with a little less effort and with an extended lifespan that the bearings should offer. What you have essentially done is to upgrade your cheap sleeve bearing (single metal bushing) to a higher grade dual ball bearing fan.

As a result you should have less problems with fans on your GPU mining rigs, but as we’ve already explained even if you do the simpler procedure of cleaning the stock fans every few months you should still experience much less problems on the long run. We have already cleaned, repaired and upgraded quite a few of these Dual-X, Windforce and some other similar fans with great success and are really happy with the results. You can even upgrade the cheaper sleeve bearing fans of a brand new card to dual ball bearings, and that should be possible on many video cards even without causing potential problems with the warranty of the card. The reason for this is that if properly done one would have to actually completely disassemble the fan using the procedure above or a similar one in order to find out that the stock bushing was replaced with ball bearings and that normally does not happen in service centers, maybe unless of course you send in the card with fan problems.

Windows Binaries for the cpuminer-opt 3.3.8 CPU Miner

cpuminer-opt-3-3-8

Another update in the form of a Windows binary compiled from the latest cpuminer-opt (source) CPU miner with added optimizations for many algorithms using the AES-NI instruction set (also works on older SSE2 capable CPUs). Up until recently the cpuminer-opt was available only for Linux users, but starting from version 3.3 there is also Windows support and we have compiled 64-bit binaries of the miner for Windows for the latest released version 3.3.8. The latest update brings some performance improvements such as blake2s with about 10% higher hashrate, support for new algorithms such as LBRY, Whirlpool and WhirlpoolX as well as fixed Skein2 that was apparently broken in the previous version.

In the archive below you can find multiple executable files that are compiled for different CPU architectures that support AES-NI instructions, so you are welcome to try them to see what works best for you. If your processor does not support AES-NI (CPUS introduced 5 or more years ago), then you might want to use the cpuminer-sse2.exe binary. The default cpuminer.exe is compiled for Intel Westmere, the first Intel architecture that has support for the AES-NI instruction set and cpuminer-amd.exe is bdver1 which should work on all AMD processors with AES-NI support. If you have a more recent Intel Sandybridge, Ivybridge, Haswell or Broadwell-based processor you can try the respective binary to see if that will squeeze some extra performance, or you can compile directly on your PC with the native instruction set supported by your CPU.

Siamining With New Stratum Mining Protocol for Siacoin

sgminer-stratum-siamining

The Siamining mining pool for Siacoin (SC) we have written about recently has also added Stratum support. Their Stratum implementation however is a bit different from the one that Suprnova has introduced a few days ago for their mining pool and thus requires users to use a different version of sgminer. While the Suprnova Stratum implementation is more of a getwork over Stratum and based on our tests it does perform very well, Siamining is claiming that their solution in true a Stratum support, so in theory it should result in slightly better efficiency. Of course the Siamining mining pool does still support the regular Siacoin Go pool miner that also produces very low percentage of stale shares, though with Stratum support the results should be even better now.

Below you can download a 32-bit Windows binary of the sgminer 5.4.0 fork for Siamining with Stratum support (source). Do note that this miner will currently only work with the Stratum Mining Protocol for Sia implemented by Siamining. The miner works on both AMD and Nvidia GPUs, so you should be covered regardless of the GPUs you have available, though it uses OpenCL for both. Our initial tests are showing really good results in terms of efficiency and lack of stale shares, so it seems that things are already working pretty well with this Stratum implementation for Siacoin (SC) pool mining at Siamining. As a result now you have even more alternatives for pool mining Siacoin to try and choose from…

Updated ccMiner 1.8 fork by tpruvot With LBRY Support

ccminer-1-8-tpruvot-lbry

While LBRY is still in Beta and you need to request an invitation in order to be able to get early access to the platform (currently only available for Mac OSX and Linux), people have been mining the LBRY Credits (LBC) for a while now on AMD via the dedicated sgminer fork or on CPU, but today tpruvot has updated his ccMiner fork (source) with the final 1.8 release that adds support for LBRY Credits mining on Nvidia GPUs as well.

We have compiled a Windows binary of the latest ccMiner 1.8 source code from github and you can download and try it for mining LBC from the link below. It is a 32-bit Windows binary compiled with VS2013 using CUDA 7.5 for Compute 2.0 to Compute 5.2 Nvidia GPUs, though it also works on Nvidia Pascal GPUs. We are going to be testing the miner with different CUDA versions to see if there is a better working combination and if we find such we are going to update the binary. If you are in a hurry to get to mining LBRY Credits however you should be all set to start with this release and enjoy the good performance that Nvidia GPUs provide for this algorithm. Below is a quick benchmark with a few Nvidia GPUs using this Windows binary as an idea to what you can expect in terms of hashrate for mining LBRY Credits.

Mining hashrate for LBRY Credits:

Do note that the pool requires a special fork of sgminer with support for Stratum for Siacoin (source).

Below you can find a 64-bit Windows binary of the miner for Siacoin (SC) mining that you need to use for mining on the pool. Our initial tests have shown that the miner offers similar performance to the one you can get with the Siacoin Go pool miner on other pools or just a bit faster with higher intensity. You may experiment with the settings and report what works best on your hardware, we have tested the miner on both AMD and Nvidia GPUs and it works fine on both. Again a reminder that the Siacoin stratum pool is still in beta, so it is for testing only and you might want to move just one GPU for example and not transfer all of your hashrate.
